Enjoyed having you out. Hope you had a good time, despite giving Chris a good run.

Mini TR: Played a fun session at Legends in Metamora last night. What a friendly group of guys! Thanks to MetlEtl for the tip on where to find this room.
The downside of my 5 hour visit to Legends is another two buy-in downswing. I got dealt good starting hands early on, only to run into bigger hands. Being stuck half my stack early on wasn’t that great of a situation, but I have been there many times and fought back before, so I wasn’t about to give up. I probably should have topped-up earlier, but I wasn’t sure I how long I was going to stay since I was still quite a ways from home. But once I had a feel for the table, I just felt I had to stay and get my moneyz back!

Early action against a nice fellow named, Chris. He re-pops my EP bet (I had TT) from middle position. It was still early, and I had already raised three hands in a row, but I wasn’t convinced that he was playing back at me. First mistake of the night, I call the 3-bet out of position. Flop comes 7 high, I check raise Chris for about 3x his bet. He thinks for a long time, and then decides to call. I'm pretty sure he has a big hand now. Turn is a jack, we both check, river brings a possible straight or flush, I don’t recall now, and we both check the river. He flips over KK, and I make a mental note, okay, Chris is not playing back at me. Turned out Chris was the rock at the table.
MetlEtl shows up about an hour later with the obligatory, “Sup, bro!” We had a good chat about the 2+2 forum static and the podcast (thanks for listening!). Later in the night he took down a big pot when he got his chips all in on the flop with a huge draw (overs, flush draw and straight draw) and got called by top pair, smaller flush draw. Hits the flush on the river and has over a $500 stack the rest of the night. Nice hand, bro. I also got into a pot with him where I 3bet him pre-flop, he agonized about a call and then on a dry, jack high flop, he folded to my continuation bet. I had AKo, bro.
I almost managed a comeback after a hand where I raised 99 from MP, get called by player to my left, then BB re-pops it. This time I call in position, figuring I can set mine and BB only has a PSB left behind. Player to my left also calls and we’re playing a huge pot. I get a beautiful 9 high flop, BB shoves, I think a bit for effect and reshove for less than 50% more; player to my left calls open-ended with 8T offsuit. Open ender hits on the turn, board pairs on the river, and I scoop almost $300 bringing me most of the way back to even.
Maybe my overall plan was wrong, but I found the table to be pretty nitty post flop, so I figured the right play was to play pots in position and bluff at all pots until someone calls or raises. Amazing how often people can hit a flop. I think all night I only took down two small pots with this strategy. All the other times, someone had a hand. To my credit, I have been working on plugging my leak where I double and triple barrel calling stations, and I did not do that tonight. So I managed to keep my stack healthy (but still stuck) for the longest time because I could win small pots here and there and the players were pretty transparent about having hands. There were a few bluffs, but on very small hands. As far as I could tell, no one was bluffing enough (except maybe me) to really justify calling big bets light. I made a lot of mistakes calling raises light out of position, or opening pots with tons of reverse implied odds value (ended up flush over flush, and I lost to a 9-high flush), but for the most part, I stayed in the game by laying down hands whenever someone bet big.
So I have to blame it on fatigue when after 1 AM I got into this hand with the player to my left (sorry, bro, don’t remember your name right now) with TT. I raise, he calls (also stuck), two others call. Flop is 6-7-9. I continuation bet 3/4 pot, he raises me to $100, and I have about $130 behind. I think about whether he might be doing this with 88, I groggily think yes, and I shove. Get called by two pair, 6-7 offsuit, and I shake his hand and call it a night.

Hey guys, this is a great thread. I am a long time lurker. Been out of the poker game for a year, been really busy at work and handicapping sports. I am going to crash in the D for a week or two and was just wondering what the best place is for me to play at as in having soft games and low rake? I am going to nit it up until I get back in the swing of the game. Thanks for the advice in advance!

Welcome back! As far as the low rake, wrong city-state for that! Seriously, Michigan collectively has the highest rake throughout the country. You will save $1-2 a won pot by playing at the charity rooms over the 3 downtown casinos because there is no bad beat ($1) and you are not allowed to tip ($1), although if I have a good session at a charity I always give whatever dealer was in the box the longest anywhere from $5 to $20 on my way out. Also of note, some places offer rake deals. I can't think of the small room in Mt. Clemens that offers $1 rake befoer 9 or 10pm if it gets going but for the most part, all charity rooms are the same rake as the 3 major casinos, 10% up to $6 per hand.

Regarding softest games, I would say the charity rooms over MotorCity (MC), MGM or greektown. Just my personal opinion and experience on this.

good luck!

Johnny G's in Mt. Clemens has the $1 rake until 9 pm. Small room but nice, and they have full bar/kitchen.

There is a good 5-10 limit with full kill omaha 8 game at Greektown on Saturdays. Last weekend it was still going when I left at 1:00 am.

MCC used to run a game on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The stakes were $5/$10 with a full kill. Anytime someone scooped a pot over $70 or $80 (can't remember) the next hand became $10/$20. I used to have to arrive at 8am on Wednesdays just to have a seat, because if you didn't get there when the game started, you weren't getting on for HOURS. The game usually started around 9am, and ended sometime in the mid evening, I'd say 7pm or so. The traffic just started to slowly trickle away, and before ya knew it, the Wednesday game was no more, and then the Saturday game was no more either. I haven't been there in a few years but it was this way the last time I was there

A buddy of mine lives in Auburn Hills and told me about the charity room the Parrot club. It's a small stand alone poker room in the Lake Orion/Auburn Hills area and was told I needed to check out the LO8 tourney they ran, which was always a small field, and only had about 2 tables of people going (Only about 30 people TOTAL were there playing when I was there). It was funny to see people doing things like splitting their 4 cards into 2 groups of 2 on the table, so they knew which ones were the low ones, and which ones were the high ones . After bubbling the tourney (I finished 4th), we had a full table of $3/$6 LO8 going. Unfortunately at limits that low, only the house and maybe one player will be coming out on top.

I grew up in Sterling Heights and frequent the Utica area. There is so much action at Snooker's on a consistent basis, it's sometimes fun just to go and watch the action for a half hour if I'm bored out of my mind! It is also true, they from time to time do a RXR $1/$2 PLO and $2/$5 NLHE. This kind of sucks, I don't want to risk the money in a $2/$5 NLHE game to reap the rewards in a smaller PLO game. I haven't played NLHE cash in years, and don't really intend to anytime soon.

I would love to start a group with people who love Omaha, whether it's PLO, LO8, PLO8, or maybe even NLO8, it'd be great to try to get a night of some lower stakes action with something like that. I know how hard it is, when I lived in Las Vegas over last winter, we had a BITCH of a time trying to get ONE game of PLO8 going. Every place was cool and said they'd gladly spread PLO8 if there was demand, and if I didn't know the card room manager somewhere, somebody I knew DID, so they were all very receptive, but the player pool just wasn't there unfortunately. However, the idea of seeing if one of these rooms (maybe snookers would be best because of the established consistent volume) would be open to us trying to start a weekly $1/$2 PLO8 or NLO8 game sounds like a great idea. Who else is interested in this? Who knows, NLO8 might catch on live lol

Omaha 8 @ Greektown??? This must be new, I don't think I've ever seen 8/b spread there. Last couple of times I've been there it did seem like they've been trying to change some things up, so hopefully this game stays consistent...

I think this game has been going at Greektown for over a month now. It died from Motor City probably 6 months ago on Wed and Sat and looks like it will finally stick at Greektown. I think it starts at noon and is running every Saturday. Hopefully we get enough people to get a 2nd game going.

The O8 game starts at 9am. When I got there at 12, there was a must move which only lasted a few hours. The main game did run all day, but some of the regs told me it was nitty.

Johnny G's in downtown Mt Clemens is the poker room you're thinking of. They offer a $1 rake for all cash games until 9pm. I play here whenever I can due to the nice rake deal...
