I will be in the Detroit area this June. Looking for:

best poker room downtown. (i.e. service, dealers, number or 2-5, 5-10 games running)

Also heard about some poker elsewhere. I will be spending several days near I-75 and Big Beaver. Any poker in that area?

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

edit: I found the charity room link.

still wondering how the action is downtown these days, which room is generally regarded as the best room.

You could comfortably spend a weekend there without having to leave the Property.

MGM and Greektown are a short drive from MCC - all Casinos are within about a 1 mile radius, but not a "walkable" mile. MGM is a great Property - most Vegas-Like property outside of Vegas that I've been to. Greektown is most worn Casino Property in Detroit, but relatively recently completely renovated the Poker Room and it is on par with other rooms in the D.

Caesars Windsor is just over the border - need a passport.
The Big Beaver Tavern is just a couple of minutes away from where you are staying and is one of the better Charity Rooms you're going to find. Reliable - a game will be there. Safe. Decent Food. Good tournaments. Educated, aware, proactive, professional Floor.

Greektown on Sat and Wed and perhaps even Thursday. They play $5/$10 w/ a $20 straddle and very often a button straddle of $40-$50. I think the buyin has been raised to a minimum of $1k

He won't talk about it, but he has a crazy past. You guys might know this but he is named in Armen Ketayian's book Money Players about rigging shenanigans in the NBA. He's mentioned only for his huge track betting scam, but he also may have been involved in pointfixing scandals with Isaiah Thomas. (I say 'may' because it is definitely uncertain, and even if he was involved, it was likely at a very low level.)

You probably shouldn't talk to him about any of this stuff because he'll assume you work for the government or something as the guy is very lucky not to be in prison.
Charlie Maloney passed away Monday afternoon. You may know him as stosh or "old man" Charlie who played at MC on a daily basis up until maybe a few months ago

Hey Otter - Do you still play regularly at MC? I remember playing a lot with you when room was upstairs but don't think I've seen you since room moved downstairs couple yrs ago. I play rbr limit games and 2-5 during week. Also, Sad to hear about Old man Charlie but he was a huge prick at the table and got booted out of room about a month ago for soiling himself several times at the table while we were playing.

I didn't know Charlie, but I played at Greektown two nights ago and there were two guys at my table talking about Old Charlie passing away.

Played @ 4 Aces at Continental Lanes last night for the first time. The room was nicer than I would have expected for a bowling alley. Seemed like it was well run, and they had a tournament that filled the room. The action was very good too, lots of over calling of three-bets and quite a few all-ins pre-flop in just the one hour I was there. I will definitely play there again when I have more time to play.

Yep. Discovered the room in December and is the only charity room I frequent since. Was also there last night but got knocked out during the very first level when my queens lost to 23o. Aside from last night when players were opening to 1000 with blinds at 25/50, it's usually a good experience as room is well run. I've probably played 2-3 weeks worth of tourneys there and final tabled 1/3 of them.

Snooker's is allowing the Mississippi Straddle now, are all the charity rooms doing this? It juices the games up a TON.

Between the Mississippi and standard straddle, some cash tables are essentially 100% straddled now.

Played at Snookers yesterday and can confirm that the Mississippi straddle was on and creating lots of action. The place was packed for the $100 tournament. Never seen so many players at a local tournament. They had 185 runners, top 18 got paid and first place was something like $4,300.

Is 185 runners a Detroit area record for a tournament? I can't think of any casinos or card rooms that can accommodate this many players. I believe Snookers ran out of poker tables and started using pool tables for the overflow. Has anyone seen a bigger field in the Detroit area?

Wow. That's awesome. I'm not really in the Local Tourney scene, but that sure sounds like a great turnout. Were they trying to seat everyone for a shotgun start, or were they refilling as people dropped? Tables are one thing, but finding 18 or 19 dealers is yet another.

Reminds me of the days just several years ago where the lines for the G'town tournies would be pretty freaking deep.

Big Beaver Tavern has been getting 60-70 regularly for their $30 Wednesday Night NL Tournaments. That is 60-70 on Wednesdays.

They had to turn people away because there were so many people who wanted in on the tourney. They were also giving away free burgers to people in the tournament. They must have had 20 dealers going because they had 2-3 cash tables (I was at one of them) going at the same time as the tournament.

Does Big Beaver Tavern have cash games going during their Wednesday tournament? I want to play there next week and maybe book the room for an interview on the podcast we're starting.

Generally they will have 1 Cash Table starting a bit after the tourney begins and people start busting out. They'll start a second as necessary. Usually 2 is sufficient and they both remain active until closing. Sometimes they'll have to combine the 2 as it gets late. They do reduce the rake for short handed cash games.

This is based on my limited experience of having played on about 4 or 5 Wednesdays and a couple of Saturdays.

Cool. I may try and make it a point to join you.

I generally just play at Snookers lately, mainly because of the action. I once checked out Big Beaver on a Saturday about a half hour before a tournament was set to start and there was only one table going at the time so I didn't stay. Wouldn't mind going there again if it is going to be worthwhile...

I have never played there, but it sounds like on Wednesdays at least there are lots of players there for the tournament and that may juice up the cash games.

By the way, I stopped by Four Aces last night before they had any games going and they were advertising a level by level PLO8 and NLHE split $40 Tournament. Never heard of this format before and I love PLO8, so I'm gonna check it out on March 13.

Stopped in at Maverick's in Port Huron last night, just before the storm. Was just gonna kill some time before going home and was curious if they had implemented the Mississippi straddle there as they had at Snookers. Well, I found one cash game running and got seated right away. What a crazy hour of poker! First of all, I don't play there very often because of the $100 max buy-in for $1/$2, so you end up waiting for a hand that you don't mind stacking off with and end up usually shoving on the flop or turn. Last night there was the usual all-ins almost every hand, but the draws and hands being made were incredible. The guy to my right was just raking in a big pot when I sat down where he had flopped a straight on a 2-4-6 flop. Caller had two pair and ended up folding on the river when he didn't improve (the board paired a card he didn't have so I guess he figured he was beat). The very next hand, four guys go all-in on the flop including the guy that won the pot before, and he takes it down with two pair and everyone shows, top pair top kicker, busted flush draw and busted gut shot. The guy went from about $150 to $700 in the first two hands I was at the table! He said he was in for $400, so I guess he'd been there a while.

The next hand the guy to my left straddles my big blind, raises to $25 and gets three limpers to call. He gets his $100 all in on the flop and gets called in two spots. He flips up pocket aces, guy on the button had top two, $700 guy on my right who folded pre-flop said he would have hit top and bottom pair, but the winner was MP guy who hit his OESD on the river. Actually felt sorry for the guy on my left who lost three buy-ins in 30 minutes with AA and AK. I don't think he was ever ahead on the flop.

Anyway, new arrogant guy took his place, and he proceeded to make snide comments and berate the dealers until the middle age guy to his right got into a hand with him. The middle aged guy had just lost a hand earlier where he threw his hand forward on the flop, face down, and it was ruled mucked even though he retrieved it when he realized there was still one other guy in the hand. It's a house rule and they enforce it uniformly so whatever. But on the next hand on the river the arrogant guy flips over his cards and shuffles them back and forth. He has nothing but 8 high. He induces the middle age guy to throw his hand forward again, and again it's ruled mucked. Arrogant guy even admits that he was trying to angle the guy into mucking and this leads to and argument between dealer and middle aged man, where the player tells the dealer to shut up. Dealer calls floor saying that he is not going to put up wit players telling him to shut up when he's just doing his job which leads to a warning to all the players to kill the banter and the angle shooting or he's going to close down the game. I don't like playing with angle-shooters anyway, so I got up and left at that point. Crazy for that room I'd say.
