As for the room being next to empty, when? Early in the morning they have at least 5-6 tables going when they open and I was there late on Tuesday and Thursday and saw at least 7-10 cash games going and on Tuesday the 202 still had two tables to go at midnight. So I don't see that as "empty" but I guess when you have about 60 tables, it is a bit empty.

I know it seems like I am an apologist for the room, I'm not... I just enjoy the room and to say the place is a dump is pretty harsh, especially when there are rooms that are definitely more of a dump then Derby. I wish someone from their management or at least a rep from the room would come on here and hear what this community is looking for. I've been to rooms where the staff makes an effort (like the Silks) and they really do listen and try to make changes. Which is why I do make the almost 30 minute drive to play at the Silks.
I live 5 minutes away also and I either drive to THR or Silks. Sucks that I have to make that drive, but I'm not looking to get raped by or support incompetent management. I might go twice a month when I'm tired and not looking to drive. I was there Wed night and they had one $1/2 and one $1/$3 going.

Promotions-They take $2 for the JP and their weak promotions don't give it back to the players. The $500/$100 high hands have to hold up for the hour, so it's not like you hit quads and they pay you on the spot. A year and half or so ago you only needed 1 card in your hand and they paid you on the spot. Silks pays on the spot. The high hands that run Mid-4am don't all get hit sometimes, so they escape without paying off large amounts. I wanna know where all the $2 jackpot drops are going b/c they can't even come close to competing with the silks as far as jackpots go. Their JP fund has to be large...probably time to start giving some more back.

They round the rake up
They do not cut rake when tables get short. Smart management...
No comp system
No happy hours AFAIK
Not particularly interested in being forced to turn up my hand in all in situations.

So in conclusion, worst rake in the entire area, bad promotions given what they take for the jackpot, not the best dealers on the whole, and bad management will continue to keep me out of this room until changes are made. I guess I could be considered stubborn given that I drive 20-30 minutes to play cards when this place is right next door, but I feel like supoorting better run rooms is the right play.

I got one that happened about 8-9 months ago I had a $3k plus pot that I c/r bluffed turn when a flush got there and barreled again otr. Guy calls, I flip up Js8c and the dealer says "jack high" twice. Guy mucks, table goes crazy asking him how he couldn't beat jack high... Right before the dealer completely kills the hand (he was moving at a snails pace, probably shocked the guy folded) the player grabs the muck and says he had a set of threes. Floor allows him to retrieve the hand if he can name the suits, he does, fml, and **** derby lane management. I have never had a hand reconstucted out of the muck because the guy is a regular.

Are you the UMiami fan that plays PLO at THR occasionally?

No. I've played PLO at THR once and it was abysmal at best. I haven't played that much on this coast during the summer.

I don't particularly like that they round the rake upwards like they do, but in 1/3 and above I don't see too many pots for under 5 rake anyway (1/3 more so than 2/5). You should check out the tournaments, they really are the best. I like the Silks and some of the tournaments they are running (wish I could run in the Halloween one, but I have to work both starting flights) and the structure has gotten better, but Derby Lane has the BEST tournament structure and the rake on the tournaments are pretty fair I would say.

I agree i like both places Derby and Silks. Silks happens to be 5-10min from me and I have been going there since they were on the first floor and a tiny room to what they have become now. I like all the dealers and the Poker Room manager is great about listening to what the players want. Derby has some good tourneys and structures and is a nice room overall but I don't go there enough to get the home feeling where everyone knows you. I plan on playing some of the 12 Days of WPT as they have some great tournaments plannned. I am hoping Silks does something similiar as well.

I think this might be true. Not that I think this is a good idea, but there have been MAJOR issues with prereg tourneys in the past. I hope that if they only do day of registrations they open it a few hours before and not the customary 30 minutes. Btw the reason I say major problems because the system at derby is still old school pen and paper... Gotta get a computer system going soon.... It'll take a lot of the busy work away.

Any idea how early we'll need to get there to register? I was going to play Event #1 on Sunday with a noon starting time. Do you think that 11 is early enough? Thank you.

I think you would. I'm playing the noon and/or the 7pm satellite on Friday so I'm hoping to get more info then since the room should be geared for the WPT by then. I'll post what I know Friday.

It seems that registration is day of, but open from about an hour or more before. even though I think the Sunday tourney is going to gave a HUGE field, 11 should be a good time to get there. I think they are going to get 2-300 runners but they have a 20 table tourney side of the room, plus anouther 39 tables, so they could if they used EVERY table have 590. Plus 2 Hours for reentry Saturday and Sunday should have big fields and big payouts.

We traveled into Tampa this past weekend just to play poker. On Friday we played 5-10 NL at Derby. I do understand that the players can do a lot of different things in that game; however, some of these things are very inappropriate for a casino game. I like the room a lot but prefer to play at the 5-10 level.

The most serious and often rule violated during my time in this game was the show one show all rule. Players were throwing their cards literally from seat 3 to seat 8 once they folded to show their buddies what they folded. Nothing was ever said about any of this. If the goal is to only have a small group that knows each other well play this game, this is a very good policy. However, if the room wishes to have anyone outside this group play their 5-10 game, they are going to have to do a much better job with this sort of thing in the future.

I know that we will not play in that game again until management cleans this up a great deal.

how is this anyones fault other than your own for not asking to see the hand?

That is fair enough. I seriously doubt that it would have been very well received had I done that. If I do decide to play in this game again, though, I will take your advice and give it a try. My bet is strongly against very much being done.

Thanks.

I play at Derby and know the 5/10 players and undstand your concerns. It's like a home game to them so naturally a few of the rules game get broken. But I know that if Derby wants to grow the game they need people like you to get more people there. You have to speak up, even if it's joking like, "what in the world was that?" or "what did you have? You folded that?" I'm not saying you have to get into their inner circle, but it helps to at least get friendly with them so you don't have the bullseye on you.
