No, but it's not surprising. Derby normally has pretty good structured tournaments.

And again brilliant insightful posts. I love people who complain but don't offer suggestions. Obviously people go there, and if you want to change something you don't like you can post here and hopefully others have had similar experiences and can talk to people who operate the room.

Gone to the dogs, poker at a dog tack. An attempt at humor perhaps?

Perhaps it was...

I think the floor people should wear their name tag somewhere other than their crotch area, besides that and the temperature at some of the tables making me perspire, i love the place.

I actually do understand it might have been an attempt at humor but read back a few posts and it just seems that people like making 1-2 sentence comments saying how bad the place is, but never saying why. I rather enjoy the room and know a good amount of people that work there so when people have something to say they should say it and have a discussion.

Re: Derby Lane Poker Room (Tampa, FL)

Going out to Derby on Friday. I'm playing in a freeroll a radio station is hosting; afterwards I plan on sitting at 1/1 or 1/2 NLHE.

What should I expect aside from terrible players?
Is there any comps I can ask for, free drinks, etc?

If anyone could walk me through (do this first, then this) it would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Does Derbylane offer satellites to the monthly $430 tournament?

What kind of stack sizes are in these games, sounds like a pretty good game.

How are the cheap stack tournaments here? How many runners/payout/level of play/etc.?

Re: Derby Lane Poker Room (Tampa, FL)

Recently, I brought up an issue to the younger, female supervisor. My complaint was regarding their tendency to call new tables when the list is 7 people long despite that working less than 5% of the time. She was very annoyed with me for bringing it up. Her response was, "Why are you telling me? You think I can do anything about it?"

I responded that from my perspective, as a customer with a legitimate concern, I wouldn't have thought NOT to bring it up to a supervisor. She just walked away and returned with a complaint sheet and said, "Write it out."

Other complaints:

It is ridiculous that there's no ability for anyone to compete with the local card rooms, allowing them to take whatever ridiculous fees they want. They've decimated the poker community in Florida with the amount of money they take out of it. This obviously is not Derby-specific, though their rake is the worst.

They call tables too early and then refuse to lower rake when not enough people show up. They close tables up at the end of the night when they get short rather than lower the rake for short-handed play.

The supervisors constantly tell you different things, like one allowed me to play heads up for a 10 dollar time rake and then another told me he'd let me play heads up for 12 and that he wasn't even allowed to make that concession.

The dealers rake varying amounts.

Most of the dealers will allow the regulars to get away with anything, including acting out of turn or table talk during hands.

They do all of the ridiculous promotions and then the supervisors take ten minutes to get to a table to pay out the promotion and enable the game to continue.

They let the 5-10 players eat table-side and get free food and drinks and agree not to do a jackpot rake but won't allow any of the other customers the same benefits, despite them paying proportionately more money.

They charge for drinks, but never have enough cocktail waitresses working to insure quick service.

They describe tournaments as having "dealer add ons" and then just lie about it at the cage and charge the full amount ahead of time.

They refuse to write receipts for tourney buy ins.

There are a few really great dealers at Derby, but for the most part, the people there are really terrible at interacting with the customers.

I'm sure there are more complaints I could add given more time.

Re: Derby Lane Poker Room (Tampa, FL)

I dislike the majority of the players in this room. If you make a move that they aren't happy with (usually, you taking a big pot), they feel the need to tell you how bad you are and question how the hell you could do such a thing, blah blah blah. I'll tell you what. I get so sick of the entitlement that the vast majority of the players have there, and how they don't at all make the donks feel welcome, when in reality, its the donks that make the game profitable. I don't consider myself a donk at all, and I get frustrated if my big hands are ran down, but man oh man... I will NEVER express frustration toward a bad player making a bad move. That only motivates them to get better. Instead I say nice hand and that I'd of done the same thing. Or "thats poker" or whatever makes them feel good about it. No hostility EVER from me.

Have you played much in other rooms? Most rooms I've played in have those 2-4 players that have to be "the professor of poker" I don't think Derby nits are any better or worse that THR nits, Silks nits, I'd say Lucky's but when the majority of players buy-in for 20 dollars, how much "poker" is actually played. I lost four straight pots to 20 dollar short stacker's at Lucky's, which I want to puke after that.

In no way shape or form am I a mark for Derby Lane, I enjoy the room and look at the way people are easy to judge, rather than offer solutions to problems they've had. Eric, in you're case about Derby, I want those people at my table. By two orbits I know almost to a tee what hands they have in almost every situation. I actually will call out hands or bets they are or were going to make (after the hand of course) which actually makes them go on the defensive. Use you're skills to your advantage with these players. If you are above their level in terms of the way to think and see the game, use that advantage. Most players are ABC straight forward, which is why I've all but taken bluffing out of my game at the 1/2 or 1/3 level. At 2/5 you have an opportunity to play a bit more sophisticated game, but still when most people are buying-in for 200-300 at 2/5 what true poker are you playing?

Just my two cents on your thoughts.

I play mostly at Hard Rock, and sure, I see that kind of stuff there, but no where near the frequency as I do at Derby. I've never tried the other rooms. I do tournaments at Derby and cash at THR primarily.

Re: Derby Lane Poker Room (Tampa, FL)

So did this Incident of entitlement happen in cash or tournament? In tournaments everyone thinks their the $#!t. If it was cash, then is love to know what limit you were playing and what day of the week. Weekdays are the old nits that you can't shove off a hand. Weekends are the "pros" who think they are 20 levels above the rest of the table. Honestly though I've seen that at almost every place I play, which is why I play for fun and not as a source of income.

For example I got chewed out for calling a 1 dollar raise at 1/1 nl today with kq and cracking the original raisers aces. So it happens everywhere. At every limit, at most any place. Just wait you'll notice it more now.

Def more in tournaments than cash now that I think about it.

2 Card Poker is a table game in which you play 2 card poker vs the other players and the house takes a rake from the game. The dealer is not dealt any cards as in blackjack.

You are dealt 2 cards, you can discard 1 for a draw. 2 card poker is exactly just that. The hand rank is based on your 2 cards. High card, pair, 2 card straight, 2 card flush, 2 card straight flush. I'm not entirely sure of the rankings and I am pretty sure there is some kind of bonus bet.
