I'll have to give that one a shot as well.

Went up this past Saturday for the 220, and I'd forgotten how well these guys run tournaments as I've been playing cash mostly for the past year or so, so mostly HR.

I know I'm sounding like a broken record on the chair issue, but wow, those chairs at Derby are just great. It makes such a huge difference. Plus dealers who mostly knew what they were doing, decent levels, etc., and overall this tournament in particular was great.

Only "bad" thing about this sort of starting stack is that the first levels are a minefield because you end up with 4-6 callers most of the time. Saw people limping 50 and then calling a raise and re-raise to 800 because "it's only 800". Of course, I'm not actually complaining about bad play, but putting someone on a hand (before the antes kick in) is pretty tough. It'll be "worse" with 25K starting.

As for how I did, I will spare you the horrid multiple bad beat details On the bright side, at least I wasn't playing cash where I'd have lost approximately $7.4 million running that badly.

If I visit Jacksonville to play at BestBet, is it worth it to drive to Tampa to play here and the other poker rooms?

There is plenty of action at Jacksonville BestBet. Really no need to seek out games (cash or tourneys) in Tampa Bay unless you just want to bop around Florida for fun.

I wish I could say it was a symptom of deep stack play but I have seen multiple callers of anywhere from 5-15x in the first four blind levels. Even seen with 75-125bb deep players consider calling allins with ace-rag or two faces. I do not understand it completely but its the way people play.

They have late registration through the end of the second level for weekly tourneys, or usually the end of the first break for monthly or special event tourneys. I usually show up late to avoid all the nonsense, Phil Hellmuth style. You get a full starting stack no matter how late you register.

Damn, that would have been good to know. Thx. That's the plan from now on.

Won't be there this time but I have played it before. What's your concern? Just another tournament, with a good structure and prize pool.

More concerned about what would be a good starting day. I like 1A days because you tend to get more of a conservative methodical group in comparison to the folks that busted on 1A and are trying to bounce back on 1B .

I know these are just opinions on observation.

1A tends to have a somewhat smaller field, so play ends a little sooner than 1B (both days end at 20% of the field or midnight, whichever comes first - but it never gets to midnight). The ending average chip stack is the same either day, but there tends to be more variance from 1B - more big stacks and more short stacks.

If you like a somewhat shorter tournament (by an hour or two) with more conservative play, Day 1A is the better choice.

Thanks for the insight.

I would like to use these structures and buy-in type tournaments as a stepping stone for the upcoming PPC summer series at Silks.

Anyone interested in playing in the $250 Memorial Day event? I got a ticket from the grab bag yesterday and prefer cash games. I was gonna sell for $225 around the day of the event but I'd do a 2p2 price of $200 if anyone's interested.

Since $50 of that goes to charity, you may have a hard time getting even $200.

I'm an 18 year old fish. The track is closer to my house than the hard rock, so I've thought about going here a few times.

Will I get eaten alive here and I should stick with the HR on Saturday nights when all the drunks come in if I want to make a little extra money?

Really depends on the game you are playing. Do you like playing tournaments? or are you more of a cash player?

Cash: $1-$1 at Derby is a bingo game with some regulars sitting at a table waiting for Ace-Rag suited to snap off a pocket pair raised to $7 preflop. Build up a bankroll and play 1-3 at Derby if you play. (Unless you want to sink $40-$80 on a 1-1 table)

You nailed it with The Hard Rock, Drunkards and The Regulars that snap them off on a Saturday. My problem is logistics, I don't like to go all the way out to the Casino to sit at a table with fish and sharks.

Tournaments: I am a huge fan of Tourneys at Silks (Tampa Bay Downs). Friendly and easy to play. Lucky's (Tampa Greyhound Track) is a little sketchy looking on the outside. The staff makes up for the scenery and the play is EASY!!!

Yea I saw a guy trying to get $150 for one of those the other day and wasn't finding much luck.

Hmm. That's weird. I got a $200 offer when I won it but figured I'd get $225, at least, the day of. Was just offering a 2p2 hook-up because I felt like it. Maybe that guy was there before 7pm, when all the tourney players show up?

How does the amount going to charity affect anything? In order to play, you still need to get a seat. Seats sell for $250. Am I missing something?

For some reason I thought this was the Silks thread! haha

Thanks for post, I really appreciate it. My family and I go to the dog track sometimes so I'll have to stop in the card room next time!

GL. Be sure to buy in for max. You don't want to be short when the donks try to give you their money.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was a loooong time ago at Venetian when some guy was buying in short every time. Don't even remember what the min was there at the time - seems like 100 years ago now - maybe $200 at 2/5.

On about his fifth bullet, he finally flops a boat (against 3 players), rivers quads, and wins about $600 net out of what was a total pot of around $5K given what the other three had on the table. One other had flopped trips to his boat or something like that, and there was a flush and straight as well.

Never seen a guy so upset to win $600...

Definitely. I would never buy-in for minimum. Seems like it self defeating to get worked up to triple up to 300.

I couldn't get the action I wanted today. I bought in for 250. Up and down after a 4 hour sess. Made out just under even.

That is exactly how I feel when it comes to min buy-ins. Never worth the trouble.
