Figured enough US refugees had made their way out here (8 and counting) that a meetup group was in order. There's also an already established community of Hungarian-born poker players that it would be nice to include. I was thinking that we could arrange a meetup 1-2x a month where we go out have a nice big dinner and then hit some bars/clubs. If you're interested post in this thread and I will do the rest of the work. For the sake of getting things started, let's say our first meetup will be March 21st.

Great idea, in for dinner, would prefer Thursday as the day

Also think we should just Start "Budapest Chatter Thread" in travel forum - no one is ever going to stumble upon this forum, I had never heard of it. Chatter threads seem to be fine for Travel forum ; Malta, Mexico, Thailand etc

What's the status of live poker in Budapest these days? I played at Miami Poker Club last summer, but apparently about a week after I left the country it was shut down by the police. Are there other locations to play live poker in the city? Are they legal?

In from part of the hungarians, im sure some more will join too, we all like to eat & drink.

Rapini: there are some legal ones. Miami was shut down, but there is one called Universum, its located in a big shopping centre, they have like 2 ~200$ BI tourneys weekly and lots of smaller ones, cash games are pretty small tho, mostly the highest is like 2/2 NL w a constant button straddle, averege stacks might be ~1000$ but sometimes more as well. pm me if u need more info or anything

when Miami was still working poker rooms were in the grey area, then the situation of the poker rooms got legislated last year i think and lot of them didnt get the license but those who got it work 100% legal, such as Universum. there are some restrictions tho, thats why they cant make 2 day tourneys, or tourneys w bigger buyins and the stakes in cash games are pretty limited too, although u can make them bigger w straddles etc. there is a casino too, called Tropicana, time to time they have some bigger games too and some ~1k€ tourneys, it works as any casino in the world, poker only a part of it, while universum is solely a poker room.

Thank you again for the great info. I wonder if the legislation was national or local to Budapest. During my last visit, I also played at Casino Sopron--which had slots, roulette, and blackjack in addition to a poker tournament--and a local poker room at a bar in Sopron, both of which seemed legitimate.

I look forward to visiting Universum and Tropicana on my next visit to Budapest.

Guys, could any Hungarian speaker help me with a little translation? There's a Hungarian girl after moving into my neighbourhood and she doesn't have a word of English and is completely lost here. I'd like to write her a note and put her in contact with another Hungarian person a friend of mine knows, google translate seems to handle Hungarian horribly though. If anyone could help me translate a short note please PM me.

Yo guys. How you like Buda hills? Possibly found an apartment for myself there for 4 weeks. How far away it is from downtown and is there good shops and pubs nearby?

Which pubs you recommend in downtown btw? I would prefer a bit more alternative atmosphere. I´m not rock or metal fan but I have always liked the atmosphere of metal pubs.

Hej guys I am pokerplayer from Malta, grinding SNGs and strongly concidering moving to Buda in Jan. Bump for the thread in the travel-section, thanks for sharing all the valuable info with us.

You guys should really start a Budapest-chatter thread, like it has been mentioned in this thread before, since this one is not easy to find.

Didnt find to much about onlinepoker legislation in hungary. What is the situation like? Did you have trouble to open bank accounts or cashout to them, as pokerplayers?

I am looking for a bedroom in a pokerhouse for jan at first, so let me know if somethings available.

cheers guys, gl at the tables, it's sunday

Just fyi I merged this thread with your post so that the right folks would see it and it'd bump their subscriptions if people are subscribed.

I'm not there now, but I try to get there every couple of years from the US.

When I'm there, I usually play in Vienna, but I have played in Budapest. I have not heard of any legal rooms anywhere outside of Budapest and Sopron.

I'm also interested in hearing about the legal status of live poker there. The last time I was there was May of 2011. I played at the Miami Poker Club in Budapest, but then I heard like a month later it was shut down. I might be going back in August. I'm not sure if I'll have time to play poker, but I'd still like to know what's going on legally.
