Main Street is one block over from where it used to be 100 years ago. You can go to where Saloon #10 used to be and go in the room Wild Bill was shot. It is set up as a replica of the actual scene. It is in the basement of a bar called Wild West. I think Wild West is only open during tourist season. The basement faces what used to be Main Street. It looks like there was a rockslide or something on the old Main Street so they moved it a block over where it stands today.
It is right at the parking deck and there is a sign on the street "Wild Bill Hickok was shot at this location on <whatever date it was>. Further up Main Street there is a sign "It was here that Wild Bill's murderer was apprehended" or something like that.
Unless you are going to play a lot of poker, Deadwood is a trip for a day or two. There is plenty to do if you like the woods or old towns but Deadwood itself is less than 1500 people and the entire city limit is about 4 sq miles with most of it being residential. You can walk from one end of the Main Street tourist area to the other in 10-15 minutes.
In addition to the Black Hills National Forest, you will be about 15 minutes from Sturgis, an hour from Mt Rushmore and Devil's Tower (opposite directions), and 2 hours to the Badlands. There are many tourist attractions beyond just Deadwood if you are into the outdoors.
