As the world's biggest fan of HBO's Deadwood, where should I go, what should I do, what should I see?

Coming in mid-September.
First, the bet limits just went up to $1000. Cash games were spread limit with $100 max bet but that should change to $1000 so standard games will be 2-100, 5-100, 10-100 with the standard 2-10 type games still alive. I would worry the local fish will get destroyed quickly though with the $1000 bet limit. Here is more info on the new bet limits:

As for what to see as a Deadwood TV series fan - The graveyard built into the cliff where most of the old residents are buried is interesting. You can also go see where Wild Bill was shot in the old Saloon #10 which is some other bar now. If you go to the real #10 you can see the chair he was in. There is an abandoned gold mine in the sister city Lead. There are several ghost towns around. There are a couple of bus tours that go out and cover the history. There are historical plaques all over town with "On this spot in...." type of stuff.

I never watched the TV show so I am not sure what you might be looking to see. Deadwood is a casino town with some old history but forest fires destroyed most of the town more than once since its historic time the series is based in so I do not know if what you are looking for still exists.

Saloon #10 is going to be the most authentic but since the smoking ban it lost some of its authenticity. The dealers used to smoke at the poker podium, behind table games, and the floor was littered with saw dust and other crap just as you would have pictured it 100 years ago. Now even the #10 is more cleaned up than it was even a few years ago.

The city has little action except on Friday and Saturday. You can find games every day but they are likely to be 2/4 FL, 3/6 FL and 2-10 spread. Lodge is almost all high limit games so they are feast or famine.

Main Street is one block over from where it used to be 100 years ago. You can go to where Saloon #10 used to be and go in the room Wild Bill was shot. It is set up as a replica of the actual scene. It is in the basement of a bar called Wild West. I think Wild West is only open during tourist season. The basement faces what used to be Main Street. It looks like there was a rockslide or something on the old Main Street so they moved it a block over where it stands today.

It is right at the parking deck and there is a sign on the street "Wild Bill Hickok was shot at this location on <whatever date it was>. Further up Main Street there is a sign "It was here that Wild Bill's murderer was apprehended" or something like that.

Unless you are going to play a lot of poker, Deadwood is a trip for a day or two. There is plenty to do if you like the woods or old towns but Deadwood itself is less than 1500 people and the entire city limit is about 4 sq miles with most of it being residential. You can walk from one end of the Main Street tourist area to the other in 10-15 minutes.

In addition to the Black Hills National Forest, you will be about 15 minutes from Sturgis, an hour from Mt Rushmore and Devil's Tower (opposite directions), and 2 hours to the Badlands. There are many tourist attractions beyond just Deadwood if you are into the outdoors.

I hate the outdoors, but my girl might be thinking along those lines.

I'm coming from the Twin Cities, and have a week to kill, and I'll tell you what: If Deadwood will only hold our interest for a day or two, and if this freaking heat wave ain't over by then, I might just keep on heading west for the Rockies and spend a day or two at 10k feet, just for some cooler weather. This summer has been BRUTAL, and it's only just beginning.

I'll be in Rapid City August 24-27. So is Friday and Saturday at the Lodge in Deadwood the best bet for some action? Do they have true NL games now after the increase? Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

We really enjoyed seeing Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Mt. Rushmore is impressive but the crazy horse memorial is something else, especially since for a the first 20 or so years the monument was carved basically by one man, sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. It's a pretty fascinating story, to me anyway.

Not really much in the town that equates to the show, that I saw anyway.

They do a reenactment of the Wild Bill shooting out on the street, and then you can follow them down to see the trial. It's technically free, but they take donations. It's a comedy music show. The music is Blue Grass/Country.

It is not true NLHE because the bet limit is $1000 but there will be few hands where that will matter in games with a $2-$10 big blind. Your best bet is almost certain to be The Lodge with Silverado being the 2nd best choice for a big game. By then Cadillac Jack's should have $1000 betting too.

So... anybody with anything regarding the increased limits?

Any of the rooms adjust for it yet?

The Lodge and Silverado both have $1000 poker games on weekends. Cadillac Jack's table games have $1000 bet limits now but I have not heard of any $1000 poker games there. The Lodge took most of their poker action when they opened. Mineral Palace and Deadwood Mountain Grand have $1000 bet limits on their table games but they do not have poker rooms.

It seems even though CJ's and Silverado have $1000 table games their poker rooms have yet to spread any poker over $100 or it is at least not common so the only $1000 poker games in Deadwood are at The Lodge.

Not even a basic 1-2 "NL" with a 200-300 BI?

Sheesh.

The Silverado BI is $60-$300 (maybe min is $50 but $60 sounds right and $300 is cap for sure). The game does not allow a bet larger than $100 at any time.

YTF!

If you are going to be this way in September, let me know when and maybe we can get together. I am always looking for an excuse to get to Deadwood.

I would hope the weather would cool off by September but who knows. If you are serious about wanting to go further west and get up into the mountains let me know and I can offer some suggestions. Depends on how much further west you want to go.

I just visited Deadwood over the weekend. The Lodge and Silverado now rake $5+$1. The other two poker rooms, Saloon #10 and Cadillac Jack's, still rake $4+$1. The rake went from $3 to $4 about five years ago as all rooms agreed to raise their rake at about the same time. Hopefully that does not happen this time and the other two stay at $4.

A $5+$1 rake in such a small poker market can be devastating. The poker scene there was already in decline. Rake was down 3.5% in 2012 even though the market set a record in overall gaming win due to the $1000 limit. The market also shed a poker room in 2012, but that room was all but a non-factor, so it is doubtful it had anything to do with the poker loss.

What rooms actually had any cash games going when you were there? Most times I have been over there The Silverado was the only place I could find a cash game going, in particular a Limit Cash game.

Silverado is for sure the only place to find a limit game. They will have a 3/6 or 4/8 fairly often. Saloon #10 is mostly 2-10 or non holdem games, Cadillac Jacks is mostly 2-10 or 3-15 spread limit and Lodge is mostly tournaments. If Lodge has a game it is 10-100 or similar. Those are the only four poker rooms left in Deadwood and only two of them are on Main Street.

Collusion has taken over in both the tournaments at the lodge and the cash games---If you still want to play poker at the Lodge Casino in Deadwood realize that you are playing with teams of up to 7 players in the tournaments and the cash games. Softest games in Deadwood at this time are at the Silverado 1-2-100 games on Friday or Saturday night. The games at the #10 are fair. They are 2-10 spread limit with a choice game on Thursday nights.

Speaking to the collusion at the Lodge, Casino in Deadwood. Sadly it has been going on for 4 years now. Deadwood has lost a third of its poker players because of this. Management and the South Dakota Gaming commission know that this is going on. However they don't feel that money stolen from poker players is important. Steal money on one of their house games or from a slot machine and you will go to Jail. A very sad situation. Deadwood1

I have no firsthand experience of this but it seems to be a common belief held by Deadwood locals that really came out after the bet limit went to $1000. Maybe this is why no other poker room has a game with a buyin and bet limit of $1000.

Occasionally Cadillac Jack's will spread a 2-1000 game. The buy-in rules have been different each time I've played it though. Sometimes $200 min/max, other times no limit to the buy-in.

I, too, have heard enough shady stuff about The Lodge that I no longer play there.

There is already a Deadwood thread though it buried. There is quite the allegation about the games at Deadwood Lodge in it.

I voted Silverado because I used to play the Omaha8 there when I lived up there and most of the staff is good. Saloon #10 (not included in your list) is good too for mixed games. CJ's would be 3rd and Lodge far in last place.

The Lodge puts in the most money for players, by far. They put out food, have a bad beat (although that may not be such a great thing) and have the High Society promotion going right now. Silverado is good, but they don't take care of the players like the Lodge.
