Ive never played there, the main casinos in deadwood now are cadillac jacks, silverado, and the lodge. I guess you could include saloon #10 in that list but they are way to shady for me to play at.

Going to be in Deadwood this weekend (Fri-Sat) Planning on staying in town, likely Cadillac Jacks (Switching between this site and booking sites as I type, plenty of rooms available, thought the holiday would necessitate camping). are all the poker rooms within walking distance?

Also, what type of shadyness are we talking about at Saloon #10? Figured as long as I was there I'd have to play for a bit at the place Wild Bill got shot.

Spoiler:
AL: I'm Al Swearengen, Mr Hickok. The last few days, I've been locked in my office, weeping, wondering where our paths might have crossed in the past, and what offense I may have given, that you would stay not 50 yards from my joint and never once walk in.

HICKOK: No poker.

AL: Is it really that simple? Dan! Dismantle the titty bar, and install a poker table!

HICKOK: Not necessary, Mr Swearengen.

(As best as I can remember it...I just moved to within a day's drive, I can't WAIT to come check out Deadwood.)

Hey, I came pretty close.

Spoiler:
Al: (Having come down quietly, and pouring his own drink) I’m Al Swearengen, Mr. Hickok. In the last few days I’ve been locked in my room weeping, searchin’ my memories, as to where my path might’ve crossed yours previous. And as to how I might’ve given offense, that you stay in this camp not fifty feet from my joint and never once walk in.

Wild Bill: No poker.

Al: Is it that simple? Dan, dismantle the titty corner and set up a poker table.

Wild Bill: Not necessary, Mr. Swearengen.

Al: I always felt poker slows a joint’s action. Been a liquor, pussy, and faro man my entire ****ing career. But certain people are due respect.

I just came back from Deadwood. Stayed there on a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night, June 5-7. I did get to play the dealers choice game at the Silverado Tuesday night, as long as it lasted. I got there about 7:30 and it finally broke around 9:30, it starts at 5:00 I think. We were 4 handed most of the time, according to the regulars that is the way it was most of the night. We then went back on Friday because the website says they run a 5/10 O8 game but when I got there at around 6:30 they said they never got enough interest to start it. So I ended up playing 3/6 Limit holdem until about 11:30. Did pretty well it was a pretty decent game, although I usually don't enjoy playing limit. They only had two tables going all night. I never went up to Cadillac Jack's or the Deadwood lodge, as they were a little to long of a walk from the main city center. I was staying at the Gold Dust. Maybe I was there at the wrong time of the year or maybe everyone was at the other two casinos outside of town but it was pretty dead there that week. The best game I played in was at Saloon #10. It was a 2/10 spread game on Sunday night. I didn't see anything shady about it, they only had three tables but it was a pretty good game. I played some 2/4 at the Gold Dust on Sunday as well, kind of a boring game. The Silverado had the nicest poker room of the three I played at. Silverado had a nice buffet for the poker players and free drinks. I guess you can get free drinks at all of them. I did get some free drinks at Saloon #10, but I never asked for anything at the Gold Dust. I had just eaten when I got there and didn't stay long enough to want anything. Monday night was completely dead none of the casinos had any poker going on when we got back from the badlands. I went out about 11:00 PM and I probably didn't see 20 people out. Tuesday night was about the same. When we came back Friday it was little more crowded but it wasn't really busy.

I guess everyone knows but they are only allowed to run limit cash games. Didn't get to play any tourneys.

"Back-In-The-day" I played alot of stud @ Saloon 10.

Coming back for a week in Aug. (3rd thru the 10th) Semi-pre-Ralley time... I like good tournaments w/ a decent structure... anything special going on during that time?? I promise I'll bring some Southern $$$ up there....

Also, how about 1-2, 1-3, 2-5 (NL) live action???

OK, time to start planning this trip.

First thing's first: US 212 or I-90? Coming from the Twin Cities. Google says the former is 30 miles shorter, but there's more to life than just that.

Take I-90. There is not going to be anything to see on US212. The speed limit on I90 is 75. US212 will be 65 with several towns to go through where it will go down. The drive is boring enough across South Dakota, you will only make it worse and longer not taking I90.

I-90 gives you an ideal midway point rest stop city in Sioux Falls, a higher speed limit, the ability to drop into the tourist trap that is the Wall Drug Store (pretty much right off the highway), and, if you need anything before driving into the Hills to Deadwood, Rapid City to get supplies.

Once you're in Deadwood you'll be fairly isolated in the town itself or can roll over into Lead.

Set aside a day to drive all around and check the sites and enjoy the views in the Hills... Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, the little towns, Rapid City, Sturgis, etc.

When I was there in 2005, I played at Saloon #10 (super fun) and Cadillac Jack's (was alright, had the biggest game in town at that time). Didn't go to Silverado or Gold Dust.

Would personally be interested in a trip report of the newest room in town: http://www.deadwoodlodge.com/casino/...rs-poker-room/

Rounders Poker Room

The Lodge at Deadwood calls their poker room the Rounders Poker Room. The standard games dealt at the Lodge at Deadwood’s poker room are typically the biggest in town. They are what is called “Deadwood No Limit”. Since no limit cash games are not allowed due to the $100 bet limit, spread limit is dealt instead. The limits are typically 2-100, 5-100 and 10-100. These are often the best games in town. The Rounders Poker Room offers a bad beat jackpot where aces full of 10’s or better must lose to qualify. Three aces on the board kills the jackpot possibility. Both players must use both cards.

Rounders Poker Room Tournaments

The Rounders Poker Room also has a unique tournament promotion three days a week. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the poker room will match all of the buyins for their no limit hold’em tournaments. It is called “200% Payback Poker”. On Wednesdays the buyin is $40+4 and the poker room matches your $40. On Saturdays the buyin is $30+3 and on Saturdays $20+2. All three days the buyin is matched by the house. There are also unlimited rebuys in the tournaments. They make for some crazy tournaments with massive prize pools. There are also standard no limit hold’em tournaments on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm. The tournaments start at 6:30pm with buyins ranging from $20-50.
The big game left Cadillac Jack's and moved up the hill to The Lodge. The Lodge gives the place away with the match buyins three days a week. They also have a small poker room buffet spread with a hot item or two and some cold apps, fruit and veggies. FWIW Silverado has the same type of food spread, if not better. They just do not have a game bigger than 3/6 FL except on weekend nights.

The tournaments at The Lodge play like the two hour SNGs at Canterbury. There is a theoretical cash value to the chips. It is a subtle way to get around the cash game limits. There are a lot of equity chops in late in that game. It is not unusual for people to have 5 or more rebuys in the tournaments. Don't expect to survive them with just a buyin or two.

Saloon #10 has just about completely died. You will find a 2-10 game there during the week sometimes. They have a 2-10 Stud8 a day or two a week. You may find a 2-100 on a weekend night but it is not a guarantee. Cadillac Jack's will have a 2-10 spread limit game often. Gold Dust's poker room has all but closed.

In the 200% Payback Poker tournaments, do they only match the original entry, or do they match the entire prize pool (including all the $10 rebuys)?

Either way, hey, if they can get away with giving up a chunk of their rake by matching the prize pool three times a week and still turn a small profit as well as bringing in players to degen on the machines and that's all the casino wants out of the poker room more power to them.

They only match the original entry, not rebuys. My guess is the poker room is a huge money pit.

Hey, here's a crazy idea: how about taking one going out, the other coming back?

Any downside to this notion I should know about?

On or before July 1st, Deadwood and the tribal casinos in South Dakota will go to a $1000 bet limit.

Great news for the Deadwood rooms. The increase will allow them to finally spread pretty-close-to-true NL. Every room can have their 1-2 (1-3) NL with a ~$100-$300 buy-in and run it at peace. The $1,000 max bet will rarely have to come into play at that game.

I can see a 2-5/5-5/5-10/whatever-blinds-they-choose-to-use to pop up at the new place where the Deadwood big game is at with a $1K max buy-in. Might as well. Anyone playing a game that size in Deadwood (even accounting for tourists) will all concentrate into one room anyway to insure the player base is maintained.

The Lodge gets most of the big action. They will have 5-100 and 10-100. I don't think anywhere else in Deadwood has a larger big blind than $2.

Was in Deadwood for our 25th ('06). We did all the graves, Wild bill, Mt. Mckinley, Crazy horse, etc, etc;. Finally, I played poker -- one of the small venues (2 or 3 tales) and I was real real drunk. Heh, Heh. It was small limit 3-6 or thereabouts, one of my favorites. But not that drunk and that late. Finally, bemoaning to a gentleman sitting to my right that I was 650 down (yeah, that's 650 dollars in a 3-6 limit game). He said, "Well you are an excellent bluffer, but do you really have to bluff every hand?" The bell in my head rung, I didn't even know i was bluffing,, period. I gathered my meager remnants and headed back to room. On the way, i thought "what the heck. might as well blow it all". I changed in for dollar slot chips and within 45 minutes, I had over 750 dollars in my pocket. Thought the machine was broken. I even summoned my drink lady (yeah, still drinkin) and asked her if I could get in trouble for playing a broken machine. She said no -- I put two bucks in the machine and said, "well here is your tip." She pulled one buck at a time and on her second, she won over a hundred. She looked around to make sure no one was watching and I took the chips and gave her the equivalent cash and ran, didn't walk, but ran back to my room. Wife: 'How'd it go, get clipped?' Me: 'not, I won a hundred or two-- did alright.' Got up early and headed for Yellowstone next morning. I would suggest Deadwood to anyone seeking adventure. that was in '06, and tonight is the first time i have told the story.

Getting close enough now to start planning specifics. UGTT's post was very helpful, but here's what I really want to know:

As the world's biggest fan of HBO's Deadwood, where should I go, what should I do, what should I see?

Coming in mid-September.
