Go play cash when a tournament is on and they send you to a table out of sight off in another room or in a back corner. I've played in quite a few cardrooms in America and Australia and Crown would be one of my least favorite places to play.
lol, legit one of the highest rake poker rooms in the world no?

~ 10$ rake cap at 1/3 lets be nice and say 20 hands per hour hitting the cap. 9 players and 2.7k on the table. if no one could reload u only need to play 13.5 hours before all the players have 0$

what a great casino!!!!

When we play short handed mix games, they keep the rake to the side and at the end of each hour, force the players to pay the difference to bring the total up to $250 an hour. Crown Casino (Melbourne, Australia)Crown Casino (Melbourne, Australia)

5/5 hasn't been getting up for a while - 5/10 gets up most friday and saturday nights. 2-3 weeks ago there was a bit of a quiet patch but last weekend it got up friday and sat.

5/10 buyin is 600 - 2k with no $5 seating charge. rake is 5% capped at $15 i believe.

The big game that gets up changes from month to month - November to February it was 5/10 with 1k - 3k buyin and no rake (just a $30 time charge), then 5/5 was getting up for a while, now its back to the 5/10 (600-2k) with rake.

good luck on the tables

1/2, 1/3, 2/5 NLHE is always running typically.
1/3 PLO also usually from mid day.

5/10 NLHE gets up sometimes towards the weekends and 5/5 PLO gets a table every other night.

What are the games like and Poker in general? Only played a bunch in the US and Europe and thinking about going to Australia for a year to travel and hopefully play some live. I read somewhere that the rake is pretty brutal and also some stuff is different like dealing out of a shoe, having to slide your stack in etc.? Cheers

It varies a little casino to casino with some of the oddities, e.g. Star in Sydney deals from a shoe but Crown in Melbourne doesn’t, so answers here would tend to be casino specific.

For Crown, which is the busiest and biggest room in Australia, you are right in that the rake is brutal; 10% capped at $15 plus a $5 seating charge. You can’t buy the button, you have to post the BB to play, drinks are full price and table changing also costs a new seating charge. There are no charging ports at the tables, dealers are less consistent, tournament rakes are high, food menus are non-existent and there are no live straddles at lower stakes.

In terms of play, in general, games are looser than in America, opening bets are bigger, 3bets are smaller, cbets are proportionately smaller, and people fold less.

All that said, despite the brutal rake, the game remains beatable. The environment tends to be gambly so overall, I’d say the games are higher variance than the games I have played in America, but still beatable.

Please note though that this response is specific to Crown and my experience at other rooms in Australia is more limited. IME, game options have been very limited and inconsistent in Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, Cairns, Launceston and Hobart. Sydney and Melbourne are the only two rooms where games are continually available around the clock. Perth I haven’t played in and can’t comment.

Thank you so much. I was looking into Brisbane as my first destination, so Poker has to wait then. Games sound interesting even considering all the Cons you have listed.

Brisbane scene is bigger than at face value. You have Treasury which will pretty consistently have 1-3 tables of 2/5-5/5 but then there's also 3-4 active homegames in the wider Brisbane area. Homegames are way, way better than treasury too!

Can someone confirm that the 5/5 PLO game is essentially 5/5/10?

Also what is the rake structure and buy in restrictions?

Cheers

Does anybody know what longer term win rates are possible given the rake structure in 2/3 and 2/5?

How's the cash games for 5/10 or 10/20 during the VPC? Was thinking of flying in to get some action.

Same as usual - most Friday/Saturday 5/10/20 gets up.
During VPC you get more time charge games ($30/hr) and less rake games (buyin is 1k-3k vs 500-2k) and you can run it twice.
games are as usual: 2 to 5 regs/pros and 3 to 8 recreational players per table

Can I stay as long as I want with my free parking visit? Assuming I'd have a nice little 36h session for example

Why don't they use the time clock at 5/10 and 10/20? Personally I'd prefer it after sitting through some people taking over three minutes to make a decision.

In town for a little bit. Obviously interested in poker but it would be nice to meet some of the crown regulars for some food or whatever. GL
