Honestly, I played a bit of 1/3 and I was a bit baffled by the diversity. One Asian girl didn't even know how to play lol. She torched about $600 within 45 minutes calling everyone down. She limped QQ from middle position (limped pot, 4 runners, seems to be the usual). Flop was J59 with 2 hearts. EP bets $18, she calls. Next player calls. The button jams $200. EP folds. She calls remaining ~$150... Next player calls. The player who originally jammed shows J5. The next player showed J8 with 2 hearts. LOL.

Look, I'm definitely a novice regarding poker on these forums. I'm not saying I know a great deal about the game. But I was looking around the games, watching, and I was thinking "what strategies are these players using?" - it seems to be a very unusual form of poker. I don't look at many players and think to myself, "this guy must regularly use the twoplustwo forums". I just think, what the f-ck.

While I don't doubt that the games are beatable, it can be quite frustrating when you are card-dead and keep on hitting the river with the 2nd-best hand. At least the players are sweet enough to let you know (with their bet sizes) when they have you beaten. Usually they're nice enough to show their hand after you fold too. Can't fault the environment, the people are definitely not bad! But I just haven't gotten my head around the poker yet.

What would your advice be to become profitable at 1/3 here?

yeah the plays there are really weird, players probably not sure if they are value betting or bluffing, though last time i was there there were some big river bluffs by some players and even crazier calls, and of course i didn't get payed off when i had quads. but the last two times i was there i've flopped quads, so hopefully next time i flop the royal flush to win the massive jackpot they have.

My advice is to not play 1/3 AU$ at all, that's a really small game. If you factor in the local living costs that's prolly like playing 0.5/1$ in Vegas. Do something that will get you the BR to play at least a little bit higher stakes.

>I'm from Brisbane so I don't often play in Melbourne. But I'll be moving there to play full time later in the year.
From my limited experience (which was just 1/3 during APPT), the games are pretty excellent. TBH though I'd look at some of the homegames around South Bank as well.

>Yah pretty standard for Oz poker imo. Rake so ***** high but stuff like this isn't uncommon. Beauty of Crown is that there's so many tables to pick from @ peak times - although the $5 table change charge isn't the best...

>In general, nit it up. You're going to be up against a lot of short stacks given the cap and so they'll make a lot of mistakes going all in with one pair or ppd. Play a tight range, play straight forward. Get position on the biggest fish at the table. Patience. Put some good music/podcasts on your headphones and entertain yourself while folding all day long.
See above.

Hi Guys,

I know this question isnt on Crown melbourne but didnt want to start another thread. Planning a trip to Sydney in a few weeks and was thinking of going to Star, can anyone comment on game quality/quantity and rake?

Just seen the star thread, question still stands guess most guys have played in both.

Thanks in advance

PLO 1/3-fantastic games but only 1-3 tables max.
NL 1/3 also fantastic game- many tables running- easily run up decent stacks.
Both games buy in max $300.

Would you recommend Sydney in July instead of Brisbane (low season)? Is there enough traffic in Sydney at NLH low stakes cashgame? Thanks...

Brisbane now has the worst cardroom in the country imo.

True of the major cities. But Cairns is truly awful.

Does crown have any sort of money box or account or something. Its just if i want to start playing there regularly, i don't really want to be carrying 1k+ in cash especially since i take public transport a lot.

The same at Stars in Sydney? Not a fan of cash too (sounds funny since it's a cashgame).

Yea same as The Star, and pretty much every casino.

Depositing is good but in my experience Australia is very safe. I was leaving the Star with 3k+ numerous times, took taxi, public transport or just walked and never gotten into a situation that was even remotely dangerous. It's not the US

There's a taxi rank right outside the doors with ushers that'll show you to the next available cab. No cars are allowed in there for dropoffs iirc. There's basically nowhere you can get banked on the way out. I've never even heard of someone being robbed at Crown.

I played 3/4 times at Treasury and the room was poorly run, often a long (1hr+) wait for a seat and the poker room shuts at 3 on weekdays. However the players were terrible and a friendly atmosphere. I got talking to a few of the regulars and they invited me to their homegames. The homegame scene in Brisbane seems to be booming and it seemed easy to get invited regardless of your skill level.

What homegame did you get invited to? The (imo) best homegame in brisbane recently closed because it was robbed :/

Yeah I never had a problem @ Star either, and I take the train out West late at night. Worst thing I've encountered is drunk people talking loud...it's not a high threat environment.

Some changes effective Sunday (July 1) at Crown:

1/3: Time allowed to act is reduced from 20 seconds to 15. You can only buy 30 seconds of time once and it will cost you $3 now instead of $1. The rake remains unchanged (max $15).

2/5: This level is now turbo. You get 20 seconds to act. You can buy time 30 seconds twice, it will cost you $5 each time. The rake remains unchanged (max $15).

In both cases, any money you use to buy time no longer goes into the pot. It goes to the house.

Overall, the changes are beneficial to winning players and the house. It is bad for losing players - of course they are over 90% of the player pool.

I'm happy with that. Anything to increase the bs 20-25 hands per hour. Now dealers should pay each player $1 if they take more than 8 seconds to deal the hand.
