Under the current system, if you play at a place regularly, you need to develop the reputation as a decent (but not ridiculous) tipper.
I dont think ive ever tipped a floorman in my life and havent had any rulings go against me that should have gone in my favor. But I guess im just careful about this stuff. Plus you never know which floor your going to get -- it might be one of the ones you havent tipped. Honestly given how much some of the regs tip, I dont have an extra $200/mo to blow on floor man tips, id rather use it for ju-jitsu training or golf practice or something.

And of course you can still make friends with some floormen without having to tip them, and they will still rule fairly with you; thats what i try to do.

One time, I was playing 20-40 at the Bike. There were a couple of regulars there, who obviously knew each other-- they were chatting in a foreign language (which I assume was Armenian). I got into a hand with one of the regulars, who had been playing very aggressively with me and clearly forcing me off of hands with weak holdings. So, I was running a 2-barrel bluff against the guy in position; he had called the flop and turn. I reached to pick up chips on the river-- I made no forward motion, my hand was directly above my stack with some chips-- and I looked over and saw the guy had already thrown his chips into the pot to call me. (By the way, he was also an ass who was ALWAYS acting out of turn to intimidate other players.) So, I checked.

He accused me of shooting an angle and called the floor, who he knew on a first name basis. The floor ruled in his favor and ruled that I had bet. I actually had to get the casino manager (who the regular was obviously not familiar with) over to overrule the floor and rule that I checked-- indeed the casino manager was quite perturbed by what the floor had done; his words were "how could that possibly be a bet?".

In any event, I am convinced to this day that the floor's ruling was bought and paid for with tips. And bear in mind, I have nothing nasty to say about the Bike-- they are a very good, professional operation, comparable to the best poker rooms in California. But that's what happens when you allow tipping of the floor, and I feel that regular players basically have to do it.

The $400 min/max game is apparently no longer 5/10, it is now 5/5. The 5/10 $500-$1500 game has been there for at least a couple years now.

Thanks. That's better than a $200 cap

Can anyone PM me if they know the maximum amount of nights one can stay at the Commerce? I've never been, but from their website it seems I can make a reservation for 99 days. Is that true?

I plan to call tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has any experience. For those interested, I'm thinking of a one-month stay.

The 500-1500NL - how many tables of it are running usually?
I played in it during the LAPC and games were plentiful and juicy. How is it during the regular times?

Typically 5-10 tables going. It's always a good game.

Sigh...
I wish there was more interaction between LA area two plus two-ers and the people that choose the min/max buy in and fixed blind structure in NL games in local card rooms in the area... (aka LA for Commerce, The Bike etc...)

The 200NL game (blinds 3-5) and 400NL game (blinds 5-10) is horrid. (both at Commerce)

The 500-1500NL game (blinds 5-10) is the best in town (believe it or not it's at the Commerce).

But -I can't believe that The Commerce doesn't make it a 200min/500max buy in for the 3-5 game (while we're at it why the heck is it not a 2-5 game).

The Bike almost has it right... problem is, that it's 1/10th of the player pool.

Bike has a fairly decent 100-300 buy in 2-3 blinds NL game. and then the 300-500 5-5blinds NL game. that one almost plays like the the 500-1500 5-10 at the commerce.

Here's my suggestion:

Commerce-

make a 40-100 buy in 1-2 NL
make a 100-300 buy in 1-3 NL game
make a 200-500 buy in 2-5 NL game

and keep the 500-1500 5-10 NL game.

do away with the 40 dollar 1-2 game
do away with the 100 dollar 2-3 game
do away with the 200 dollar 3-5 game
do away with the 400 dollar 5-10 game (barf)

who exactly makes those decisions anyway? can we put him in a well?

This discussion has come up before many times. The NL cash games are structured for the fishes and the donkeys that depend on luck so that they can splash around and not go broke as quick. Without the bad players there is no game (or way way less games).

Exactly this.

I don't understand why people keep bitching about the min/max buy-ins @ Commerce on 2+2. As far as I know, Commerce does not have an authorized rep for cash games who reads 2+2. Additionally, it's just a terrible idea to change the structure because the structure is creates fabulous action and breaks the fish slower than a 100BB-200BB buy-in spread would. I'd go as far as saying it's in the top 3 reasons that the Commerce has the best poker action in the US and possibly the world. (#1 location outside LA, #2 market share, #3 buy-in structure)

Exactly. I used to be one of those people bitching about the capped buyins there, wondering why they didn't change them to a 100bb buyin that I would play. Commerce did it right. If they switched to 100bb they would just get more 2+2 nits at the table and that is exactly NOT what makes a good game.

And their player base prefers the caps. Case in point- they tried changing the $400 buyin game from 5/10 to 5/5 and changed it back near-instantly after the players revolted. Face it 2+2'ers, your views are in the minority when it comes to what players and cardrooms prefer, and what they know makes a good game.

Are those Commerce Casino commercials realistic? All the people in the commercial are very good looking, having a great time, and they're eating what appears to be gourmet style food.

They're as realistic as any beer commercial in which the schlubby guy pops open a Bud Lite and every hot girl in a 10-mile radius comes running to him.

They're not quite as funny though as what the Bike used to have on their website: people in formal-wear getting out of a limo. That's only happened once at the Bike, the day they hired models to shoot the photo.

Sorry for these newbie questions, but I'm trying to get some opinions here.
I'm heading to LA next week, and I've never been to Commerce. I'm with the family on vacation, and we're staying in Hollywood. I'd like to play at Commerce one evening (7:00/8:00-ish).

About how long of a drive from Hollywood to Commerce?
Am I better off taking a cab or driving? If I'm taking a cab, any idea on approximate cost?

Thanks.

At that time of night - about 15 to 20 minute drive. And you're probably better off drivng if you have a car. Cabs are not common and are expensive here in L.A.

At the table? Probably not. But I've seen people sitting around the place playing online (typically during LAPC). Make sure your security is strong since there was apparently a big problem with people hacking in and draining poker accounts some time ago.

Oh, and are you f'ing serious that you'd actually play online while sitting at the table if you could?

Yup, it's an unbeatable game (or if you beat it, it will be for $1 to $3 an hour. The drop is $5 + $1 for the jackpot (which you will almost certainly never win). If you don't want the dealer to flash your cards you'll have to tip $1 almost every time. So every hand you win you give away $7, or $6 if you don't tip.

You can beat this "Kill" game where you have to post $8 if you get unlucky enough to get AA after a win (and subsequently win with the AA)?

This is one tough game to beat. And beating it is a waste of time.

There's only one $15-30 game at HPC usually. Saturdays probably 2 (1 being a must move). The game can be good or bad. Usually not that great during the day and much better at night. Sometimes a lucky 4-8 kill or 8-16 kill "fish" will sit down. Note that not all $8-16 kill players are fish. The $4-8 kill players are all fish since it's an unbeatable game (or if you beat it--it won't be for much).

During the week you may not see a 15-30 LHE game there. HP is sort of dead as far as high limits are concerned, and I wouldn't trust Commerce as far as I could throw it. Too many cheats.
