Bike you get free food as much as you want...

Commerce you get a card and earn $ per hour that you can use towards food...

And what andy said...
The policy has changed at the bike. They give you a food coupon that you can use to purchase your meal after 3 hours of play. You do not get to order all you want! In fact, they cap the amount you can order with your coupon. If I recall correctly, its only $10.

That was always the way it was downstairs, so are you saying that they have now instituted that policy in the plaza games too?

Only false for that game. The $200, $400 and $500-$1500 games are all $5+1 with $2 preflop.

Yea, all you have to do is go up there and apply. I have spoken to the Hustler Casino in Gardena about it, just for curiosity sake. I know the house players there and they told me they get basically minimum wage and they play with their own money. One gal they have loses a lot more than she makes. The guy that I know is the tightest I have ever seen and only plays lock hands. They seem to have to change tables often, so its hard to see how well he does. Every time I have seen him, he stays about even. I have never seen him win or lose big. Usually everyone folds early when he raises, so that ends the hand with a tiny profit.

Yea, at Commerce, the $1/$2 game has a max buyin of $40, buy when you re-buy, you can buy $60 in chips.

At Hustler, you buy in for $50 to $100 in their $1/$2 game, from the get go.

Commerce is spreading a 60nl 1/2 game as well. You can rebuy to 90 when felted or at half stack. The 3/5 is 200 max BI with 300 rebuy. All games you can rebuy to 1 and half times the starting stack when felted or half stacked.

Any other tips for a first time visitor to the Commerce?
Well, if you want to get the free food, a Player's card is required for the 5/10 game. And if you have a balance on it, they will deduct it. On the other hand, if you just got the card, your balance will obviously be $0, and they will give you your food free. So its better to sit down at the 5/10 first and eat and later move down if you need to, rather than the other way around. You could sit down at the lower limit and rack up $1/hour in comps on your card and eat with it and then move to the 5/10 with a zero balance and eat again a few hours later. Or you could just stay at the 5/10 and eat all you want all day long. I gather that you like to eat.

When did this policy change? The coupon for 3 hours of play is at the 1/3 $80-$120 game. You order off a special menu as well with the voucher, not off the main menu. Last I was there (two weeks ago), food on the mezzanine level (2/3 $100-$300 buy in and above) was unlimited and complimentary.

Thanks. Yeah, I wouldn't want to be a house player for a minimum wage. Especially, since they move you around frequently and you have to play different games.

What are the requirements for being a house player? Can you play whenever you want or do they assign you a schedule? Can you play for as long a session as you want? If true, we could treat it as rakeback.

there should just be a sticky about this somewhere. you make a lot more than min. wage. top section props and hosts make around $40/hr. Last bottom section prop i knew made $18. Some of it is considered rakeback and is not taxed! pretty good wage, being a prop is tough though. over a 5yr. period id say over 90% dont last. almost all 5yr+ props are nitty as hell and just working for the hourly as far as i can tell. nearly all l.a. props have to play the bigger limit poker games and are on a schedule and are told when to sit down and when to get up. most really talented players go indy at some point. rick nebiolo was a prop and a host i think. he prob has a thread about this in the archives.

How are the mid limit mixed games at the Commerce? What games do they usually spread as part of the mix and what games are players strongest in?

Sadly, I only excel at NLHE and PLO. Black friday killed my ability to perfect my skills in other games cheaply but I'm not a total hopelatron. I have played limit games.

I live out of state but have grinded the LA poker scene so I understand the polarized nit / hyper agro player mix. While in LA, my game of choice has been the 500 or 600 NLHE at Commerce.

Hope thats enough background for you guys to advise.

If you actually played 600 NLHE at Commerce you would know there are no mid limit mix games, so I am not sure where you are coming from with this question. The only mix games that run semi-reliably are 200-400 (and bigger) and are mainly different variations of Badugi/triple draw. Once in a blue moon (or during a major tournament) they might have smaller mix games (like 40-80 or 75-150) but these rarely start up and never last more than a few hours.

If you are interested in playing very shorthanded, there is this North African guy who walks around the top section a lot trying to hustle guys to play 80-160 mix games with him, so if you want to play 2 (maybe 3 handed) you can start a game with him. But be forewarned, he often either hits and runs or loses a little bit and runs, so I would not leave another game that is decent to start a game heads-up with him, cause he is likely to quit after 30 minutes.

Thanks for the info.

By mid limit I was talking like the 12-24 mix at the Aria (perhaps this qualifies as low limit in LA). Not looking to burn my bankroll learning. lol.

So basically, LA is not a place to learn mixed games.

Very frustrating when trying to learn the other types of poker. Can't play too low or you won't learn a thing. Can't play too high or you go busto.

the hustler also runs a check on your current financial situation, bank accounts, etc.

i don't know if this procedure is the same at other area casinos around los angeles, but i know that's part of the criteria at the hustler to becoming a house player.

What's the deal with tipping floor guys? I see a lot of the guys at commerce giving the floor $5, $10, or w/e. I don't really notice them skipping over names for table changes or anything but i'm not actively paying attention. Is there any reason to be tipping the floor?

What do you mean they check on your financial situation? You mean like a credit check? Or just how much you have in your checking account?

just a question...i've never been to commerce, but i've always heard its a large poker room and that LA has a great poker scene...how is it that there are so few posts/views here in the commerec thread? does no one in la know about 2+2? does no one at commerce own a computer? from what i hear theres just as much action in la as there is in lv and ac and ct even, but those places threads have so many more views and are way more active...the last time this was posted in was 12 days ago! whats up with that?

the demo at commerce is older, richer and more ethnic than anywhere else in the USA.

Its also the top of the poker food chain and those that dont believe it find themselves 20bi deep in a hurry.
