I will be in San Jose this Saturday and thinking of playing here or M8trix in the afternoon for a few hours.

I usually play 2/5 NLHE. Is that the same as 2/3/5 blinds? Is it 2 (button), 3 (small blind), and 5 (big blind)? Do I have to post both blinds and button as a new player?

Any other tips on what to expect would be helpful - waiting time on Saturday afternoon, time rake, chopping allowed etc.

Thanks!

Going to be in town 4/12-4/27 on business and staying pretty close. How much will I need to grease the floor to get a 2/3/5 or PLO seat quickly?

Usually promising them your firstborn does the trick.

I had heard that if you don't grease the floor you will have to wait forever because lots of others do and get your seat, but have now had several regs tell me that isn't true which makes me happy.

First time to the Bay Area, so please forgive the ignorance of this question...

Why are dealers using this curled stick to bring in bets and mucks? Is it a state rule or just a house policy? First 3 hands we’ve flipped up as many cards, including me slipping the nuts into the muck after a river jam didn’t get called, was pretty tilting...I wanted credit for being a maniac lol...

If you see the dealer is having a hard time reaching your folds, toss them in a little farther.

I don't know why people insist on making life harder for the dealer when it takes almost no effort to toss their cards or bets a few more inches.

People don’t do it out of malice. It’s just easier and done out of habit. The tip is for service, such as in these situations, I would have thought. When I used to live in the area, I had a strong preference for Bay > matrix not least of which was due to the annoying short-armed dealers who would constantly chastise the players for not pushing their chips in. And that stick thing slows down play by a meaningful amount.

Played the 2/3/5/10 game last night for about 7 hours, game was great and super fun. Glad to be in the Bay Area the next couple of weeks and plan to play a lot.

M8trix has a great floor staff, especially the swing shift. The waits are not that long.

If the players would toss their cards and bets out a bit further, they wouldn't have to use sticks. Games are usually great, action is fantastic most of the time. The dealers aren't the most competent, but thank God the floor handles any issue that comes up. Personally I hate the sticks, but I ust ignore it.

So I hear the games are match the big stack now? Awesome if true and will have to find an excuse to make a work trip to the Bay Area again.

Not really. 2/3/5 is still a 500 cap game. There is a separate "big stack" game that has initial 200-1K buy-in, then is match the biggest stack. Typically plays with a straddle, usually 1-2 tables going.

Played here while in town for a wedding. Game is nice but the rake is a bit absurd. $6 rake on a $14 limped pot preflop...

It's a drop, not a rake. California does not allow a rake. The state did not want cardrooms to make more money if people gambled more, so to take away the incentive for cardrooms to encourage gambling, they take the full drop up front.

Can you buy chips at the cage or do they require a chip runner to bring you the chips?

Thanksgiving weekend guessing games will be great. Matrix or Bay 101 this weekend? Which one has shorter waits and bigger action?

Only 7 poker tables running on a Thursday night. 1-2-3 list was longer than the board. I got a table fairly quickly at 2-3-5 through the usual means.

Do they ever run more tables anymore?

What are the “usual means”? I guess I will assume you tipped your way onto a table.

I say hi and mention I'm around if they need to fill a seat. Then I keep loitering around. Few minutes later he seats me and I tip $5. So yep. It feels a little dirty but it works. Granted the list for 2-3-5 was pretty short so I don't feel horrible about it.

It's better than Bellagio, where they skip your name on the list if you are known as a non-tipper.
