I did not find a thread in here for this casino.

I'm an American planning on being in Ottawa for a couple weeks later in the month for work.

I've never played poker in Canada before and I was hoping someone could tell me what differences I can expect from poker in the US? Normally I play $1/$2 NL or $2/$5 NL. What are the buy-in amounts? Any special rules?

I speak NO French at all so I'm wondering how difficult it's going to be for me to keep up with the game. Are the dealers tolerant of people who don't speak French?

Thanks for any help.

1/2 is 50-200
2/5 is 100-500
5/5 is 200-1000

All dealers are bilingual and most of the time over half the table is english anyways. Only difference is JQK = VDR but you can ask the dealer for a little reminder card. Other than that pretty much everything is the same.

Thank you for the reply.

But what does JQK = VDR mean?

Cards are in French.

Jack=V
Queen=D
King=R.

Easy way to remember, two Queens=double D's.
King is Royal.

Also, at least at the Montreal Poker Room most of the players speak in French, so when their is some table talk, you will not understand it, but at the Casino du Lac Leamy, because people in Ottawa speaks a lot more English than French. Good luck!

It's a fun room but has a pretty high rake. Usually gets decent action on weeknight and always on weekends.

...trolling i take it ?.... i havent lost a dime there, the last 10 times out and i suck @ poker. Mind you i only play 3 hours max cause of back problems. Tonight at my 1/2 table 1 guy reloaded 3 times in an hour, after he kept calling down with top pair on 5and 6-way limped pots... at least 2 fish or bad shortstackers per table... lotsa impatient players looking for a quick score... there are some decent regs, @ 2/5.... i dont play often or for long hours ,but i'm easily up $1000 this year over 30 ish hours. I always find there's more english people at the table than french... just make sure u remember the cards are french for king, jack queen as someone alluded to earlier, cause that screwed me once..lol... good luck at the tables... oh yeah, 1 more thing... keep an eye on the dealers, for incorrect change when u bet, and tonight a pot was pushed towards a set, rather than a rivered str8, but a couple of us spoke up....

I go to Ottawa several times a year
This room is fine I typically play Foxwoods this has no where near the spread options or table selection
The rake is very high
The dealers cordial
The play varies some fish some solid regs like most rooms

I definitely agree with the above post.

On a typical weeknight, there's usually one to three 1-2 tables running and only one 2-5 table. 5-5 almost never runs. The 1-2 games are actually pretty decent during the evenings and are mostly filled with incompetent senior citizens with a whole lot of gamble in them. Of course, there are usually some decent younger regs but usually only 1 or 2 per table from what I've seen. Weekends usually generate pretty good action.

The dealers are bilingual and friendly. I haven't had a single problem with any of them.

If you have a casino gold card, you can call ahead and place your name on the waiting list. It is pretty convenient for a guy like me, who lives 30 mins away from the place.

Unfortunately, since it's in Quebec there is no drinking allowed at the table. However, there is a bar within 20 feet of most of the tables so people who want to booze can take a few hands off to down some suds. Works for me.

lol I just found this thread, so I'm going to bump it for s&g's.

lol @ people saying there are decent regs at 2/5, much less at 1/2.

Chrusher97 is, like, the 2nd best reg in the room, and he's an idiot, so pretty sure anyone who knows anything about poker will do OK in this room.

I will be in Ottawa Friday June 14th and Saturday 15th to play poker before a conference. Can someone give me an idea of when the games get going. I would prefer to play 5/10, but understand 2/5 is the best I will get. On average, at what time of day will this game start up on a Friday and on a Saturday?

And how late can they run?

Any potential to play 5/10 in Ottawa?

On a Friday/Saturday, 1-2 games start at 10:00 AM when the room opens, and the 2-5 game generally gets going early afternoon, maybe 1:00 PM-ish, although it could start as early as 10 AM. On a weekend, they run fairly late, and it's not uncommon for the 2-5 game to run all the way through the night, and continue into the morning/following day.

5/10 is a long shot, especially in the summer months. I'd say there's less than a 5% chance of 5/10 running in the mid-June dates that you mentioned. Probably an 80% chance that a 5/5 game with a 1k buy-in starts at around 7:00-ish on a Friday night.

At 1-2 games, the rake is 10% capped at $7.
At 2-5 and 5-5 games, the rake is 5% capped at $10.

Both of these also have an additional $1 drop for the bbj.

Tipping is the norm and expected. I would say people in this room tip higher than average compared to US poker rooms.

Played Saturday for the first time in almost 2 years. A few changes I noticed:

- At the desk you can no longer buy more chips than the max buy in for your game. This isn't a big deal because:
- You can now buy chips at the table.
- Most annoying: You have to cash out at the main cage. This seems to be a fairly recent change, as it was a constant stream of people trying to cash out at the desk.

Rumor has it that by the end of the summer alcohol will be allowed at the tables. Looking forward to that.

Anyone know what the deal with the WSOP tourney on May 18th is? Is there a seat to the Main Event involved? There are no details on their website...

Saw a poster for it above the urinal while relieving myself. Nothing was very clear. Maybe they're being vague about the seat as they don't think they'll make the numbers and there is no guarantee?

Yes, there is a WSOP Main Event Package added to the tournament by Lotto Quebec as an overlay for first place, on top of the prize pool. The tournament is $300 + $35, and is taking place this Saturday, May 18. They are also capping the event at 90 runners, and it is currently sold out.

Now that the WSOP-C event in November has been moved to Casino du Lac-Leamy, can the players there please give us an update on this casino, e.g.,
- Is the rake structure still as high as $11 for both the electronic and human-dealt tables? Does Casino Montreal or any other area poker rooms have lower rake?
- How many electronic and regular tables in the poker room? Will the WSOP-C events be held somewhere else?
- What are the recommended family-friendly attractions and hotels for November?

^ No more PokerPro (electronic) tables. They got rid of those a ways back.

The rake is the same across all Quebec Provincial Casinos. Just outside of Montreal there's playground poker, and another room "Snake's". The former is crushing it, and I haven't heard much about the latter in a while. I haven't played either, but its my understanding they have a much more sustainable rake.

As for family friendly stuff to do in November, lots of great outdoor attractions for walking,hiking and biking. Novembers can be kinda cold here though.

Also, where did you see that the WSOP-C was moved to Lac Leamy? The site still shows it as Montreal.
