As far as night life goes I haven't had TOOOO much experience with it in Montreal, but I found the area around St. Denis and Maisoneouve to be pretty happening. Is there a concentration of dance / night clubs anywhere in the down town area?

What do you guys think about Hotels? I generally like to stay at one of the two downtown Delta's (Delta Montreal on Kennedy or Delta Centreville) but I have stayed at some other hotels in the maiseneven area. The cheaper ones tend to be REALLY bad and not worth it unless you don't have any I.D. on you.

There's a sports bar on Rue St. Catherine's (just past what I can only presume to be some sort of gay all night rave) that has a killer breafast and a decent enough selection of women who drink there.

Around St Denis and Maisonneuve, it's more bars than clubs. St. Laurent has a massive concentration of clubs from hole in the wall dives (lol, Corovaments) to respectable establishments. However, St. Catherine has some of the better clubs though the concentration isn't as dense. Laboom and 1234 are both just off St. Catherine. The sports bar you're talking about, I think you got it mixed up a little. It might be Champ's on St. Laurent (awesome bar, I would do horrible things to baby seals for those nachos) and it's a couple blocks from My Place which I'm assuming is the gay all night rave you referred to. I don't think My Place is a gay club but I've only been there on a McGill event and they don't serve alcohol. Lot's of people just do E and go there to listen to techno music and play with glow sticks.

Cheap hotels/inns you could find near the McGill area. There's alot of them near the Sherbrooke and Parc area as well as on Docteur Penfield. Best breakfast in town would be at Place Milton on Milton and Jeanne Mance. Prices are cheap, food is fresh, and the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly.

The bad beat jack pot was almost, ALMOST hit by my table.

I was dealt AJ in the small blind, bunch of limpers as per usual and I make it 13 monies to go (I wanted to make it 12 so I threw 12 in but I forgot about the small blind). Get 4 callers, flop comes A8A. Bet out, get 2 callers. Turn comes A. Bet, short stacker shoves his remaining 20 something, everyone else folds, I call. I show the quad aces, he shows KK, and river comes the J giving me fullhouse as well as quads. I knew they were never going to give us the jack pot for this but a couple guys at the table called over the floor and yep, didn't get the jack pot. Oh well, but that was a decent sized pot.

Very next hand. Get dealt 33 on the button. Some guy raised it to 10 and I called as well as 2 others. I see a 3 out the gate on the flop and another low card when I think to myself "If I flop quad 3s..." and before I finish that thought, the dealer puts out a 3K3 flop. I don't remember the following action clearly but I manage to get 1 street of value out of the original raiser who ended up making folding to my turn raise cuz I think he probably had a weak K and I have a rock tight, rape aggressive image.

Hello all. I read through this entire thread and have a few questions that have not been addressed before. I have played poker frequently in Atlantic City and several times in Las Vegas, but this coming weekend will be my first in Montreal. I definitely plan on going to the Casino de Montreal while I am there.

I have a few questions:

(1) I assume that the games play in Canadian dollars, correct? Is the easiest way to get them to use an ATM card? That's what I did when I was in Italy last year and it worked well. When I am done, what's the best way to convert it back to US dollars without high fees?

(2) I usually play 1-2 NL in Atlantic City. What are the buy-in's for 1-2 at Casino de Montreal? I usually buy in for the maximum. Is it 200 or 300?

(3) What is the parking situation like at the casino? I'll probably be there on Sunday or Monday.

(4) Are there any customs specific to the Montreal/Canadian games that I should know about? I know in Britain that table-talk is generally discouraged (much more so than in the US, at least). Is that true in Montreal?

1) Games are of course in Canadian dollars but other currencies can be exchanged right at the casino

2) $20 maxx at 1-2

3) Lots of parking, but you actually park far away from the casino and then a free shuttle comes every 5 minutes to pick you up

4) No special rules, table talk is completely fine

The jackpot was hit a few weeks ago. I was in Montreal for a wedding and played some poker the night before. It was a 2/5 NL table. I believe the turn gave one player a K high straight flush and the other play a full house Aces full of Kings. Winner got about 73K and loser got 37.5 rest of the table got between 3 and 4K.
Nice thing about it is that they didn't have to pay any taxes.

1) They change US$ into CDN$ right at the poker room and always have the best exchange rate. For the other way around, there is a bank right in the casino as you leave the grounds that has decent exchange rates.

2) $200

3) I always valet. It's free, simple, and fast. Parking garage other choice, free again and close.

4) Talk all you want. Since many people know each other usually lots of talking, but mainly at 2/5 and 5/5, not sure about 1/2. Depends on the day, some tables always speak French, some English, some mix. Dealers generally announce everything in both.

NLHE is the only game they spread there. Don't think Montreal's poker scene is developed enough for the casino to be spreading other variants of poker except for NLHE.

In a completely unrelated note, I was toying with the idea that Montreal could be the gambling mecca of North America. If somebody comes along and builds 20 casinos in the city, Montreal would be so much more awesome than Vegas. Don't tax your winnings, actually aesthetically appealing city, night life probably atleast on par with Vegas (you can actually touch in most strip clubs in Montreal). Then again, somebody has to build 20 casinos first and the government or someone else would probably find a way to ruin it. Oh well, as I say, I'm an arts student, all I have are dreams.

Thanks for all the replies. I am really looking forward to playing at the casino. Do they use chip runners, or a cashier cage?

That's great that they exchange money at the poker room. My wife likes to play slots, so I figure the best way is to just pull money out of an ATM once I get to Canada.

Thanks again to all.

No chip runners. Pretty small room, just a cashiers "cage" (no cage actually).

I was at the cardroom yesterday, there was an asian kid with a notebook actually taking notes on everyone at the table, I found it pretty amusing.

The 1-2 and 2-5 wait times have long been improved. The cards are still French but it shouldn't take too long to get used to it. I wouldn't say the cash buy-in structure is terrible. 1-2 and 2-5, you are allowed to buy in for 100 BB max and something like $40 or $50 min for both. 5-5 is maxed at $1000, not sure about the minimum and 5-10 is $1500-$5000

I am thinking of visiting for a few days. I have heard the rake is very high.
Ten percent to $7 ?

Are you expected to tip also?

Oh trust me, you can easily beat the rake at 1-2 and 2-5. Most players there have a sign around their neck saying "TAKE ME TO VALUE TOWN!" Lots of fish chasing draws and idiots over valuing top pair or even middle pair. And what I do is I don't tip if I win pre (they also have no flop no drop), no tip if I win with cbet on the flop against just 1 or 2 callers, tip a dollar any pot past the turn with atleast 40ish, tip 2 if I get a massive AI or multiway AI, 3 if the pot is really big, and an extra dollar when the dealer ends his/her down if he did good or if I felt I didn't tip him enough due to circumstances.
