listening while a guy explains in great detail (at the tournament table, during play, after calling off with trash, and hitting a miracle,) how he and his buddy's rig tournaments by team playing and getting all-in against each other so one of them will double up and go forward with a big stack. (He was more concerned with us thinking he was a donk than he was with admitting to cheating. I looked at the Dealer and he just shrugged. When I talked to the Floor about it later his attitude was basically "so what, what do you expect me to do about it.")

Pretty much any way you can think of to drive rec's away from the game, I've seen it or experienced it in the Poker.

The regs wouldve called in. Ive played there for years and the wait list does not get cheated.

The players, well yeah theres alot of bull**** amongst regs that can sometimes happen, but this definitely not the norm.

The tournament strategy of going all in with your friend is a terrible strategy. If idiots are doing this thinking its a good strategy, thats great.

Its a reg heavy room because there arent enough tables and the wait lists discourage new players, but the things you mentioned are definitely not any sort of norm.

I assume you are jumping in to defend Edgewater? Well, since the wait-list gets "manipulated" in pretty much every card room on the planet, I'd think it's safe to say that at a room as poorly run and as reg-heavy as that place was, rec's were not always treated fairly by the list.

I've been playing poker for over 40 years. I know when I'm being targeted. It happens to rec's and newcomers a lot in all kinds of games, but they weren't very subtle about it in the PLO at Edgewater. It's akin to collusion and should be discouraged by anyone who cares about the game.

The point I was making about the guys playing as a team was that they were openly colluding, and the dealer and floor could have cared less. (This was at river rock, but I've seen plenty of what could be described as "Team Play" in the casinos around here over the years. I've never seen anyone running the games challenge or discourage it.)

I appreciate that you, as a reg, have taken the time to tell me, a rec, how things were for a rec in your room. Since I was only there occasionally, and felt discouraged about returning, I missed out on coming back other times when I would not have seen multiple players seated after being assured that I was next up, and I could have enjoyed some plo sessions where I was getting a fair game, and not playing my one hand against 8 heads up matches simultaneously. My loss I guess.

I sure hope the Parq is better run but I don't count on it, especially not if the staff or managers from Edgewater are involved...

Looks like the rake is going up city wide Nov 1st to 10% $7 max, Pretty massive jump from 5% $5 max not including bad beat jackpot $$.

Curious how this will affect the games and if it happens all throughout Alberta not just Calgary

it wont affect the games much at all it will just transfer the money from any winning players over to the casino. the losing players will just loose a little faster and more.
ultimately in a few years there will be less games of all sizes.
the winning players will be the ones that only sit in good games and jump around to them and quit immediately when the game gets poor. as what is usually needs to be done anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Cowboys generally runs 1/2 NL and 1/2/5 PLO during the week.

Grey Eagle is pretty similar.

Deerfoot had bigger games during their last series, but not sure that’s always the case.

Rake is 10% max $7 + $1 BBJ

Comps: LOL

Games always depend on who’s where and when. Can be reg invested or super juicy or anywhere in between.

If you won't have a vehicle just stick with Cowboys. Like prairiebreeze said, they are all pretty much the same, but Deerfoot and Grey Eagle have button straddle, so they would be closer to 2/5 for the most part.

There is no comps at Cowboys and they got rid of free rounds at the same time they increased the rake. Not sure about the others. The rake is max $5 everywhere as far as I know and I heard Deerfoot has a $2 BBJ drop (no idea if that's true, I doubt it is, but worth asking about) but they tend to have much bigger jackpots.

I'm still just playing 1/2, but the players there are god awful terrible, I can think of 1 player at that level I think is a good player. I can't imagine 2/5 is much harder. If you are a good player, none of the regs should scare you, they are for the most part nits but their strategy talk can make for some good comedic relief. If you're in a game in Calgary and don't think it's juicy, you need to hit the lab and hit it hard.

Thanks but I'm looking for multiple tournaments with some bigger cash game action on the side, anywhere in Alberta.

Yeah good luck because that only happens about 3-4 times a year.

The casinos are killing poker in Canada.

This is the slowest time of year for MTTs in Calgary, the next series is probably Deerfoot in January.

Hey Kind of confused from facebook group talk + here since I only caught bits and pieces of it, I know above it says all of them are at $5 max but was that before changes? seems like it went from them saying it was a mandatory rake raise to some casino's saying they are not changing?

Did all/any casinos in Calgary end up going through with the change to 10%/$7 cap rake change? Or did some stay on $5 cap?

Finally hopping back into live near end of January so want to shop around if any casinos kept the lower rake option.

Before the rake was 5% cap at $5 now it is 10% cap $5 at least in Calgary, Edmonton has mostly gone with the $7 10%. So the rake did increase in Calgary but it was the % not the $ cap.

Few differences in the promo's in Calgary though, Deer foot charges more for there promos but also give more and the $1/2 has gone up to $1/3. IMO the best place to play is grey eagle for NL ( small rake/promo and generally bigger game with $500 max/button straddles) And cowboys for plo ( always games running ). Cash casino is also great for plo/dc, Not always a game running but they give back $2/hr for food/drinks.

Are there any 5/10+ PLO games running in Calgary nowadays? I thought there'd be more action at Deer Foot during their tournament series.

hey 27allin

I just finished playing in Edmonton, I am heading to Calgary tomorrow. You going to be playing? I will probably finish the night at Golden Eagle because we have a suite there but I'm open to playing somewhere before hand.

I likely won't be playing because there's no bigger PLO games running. I'm staying over at Deer Foot if you want to start something.

Not much action in here, but is everyone aware of what Deerfoot is doing partnering with us at Playground to offer a Day 1 and Day 2 of the MILLIONS North America Main Event with its crazy $10,000,000 guarantee?

The Day 1 and Day 2 will be on April 17th/18th and then if you qualify for Day 3 at Playground, you'll get a $1,200 travel bonus (NOT taken out of the prize pool) to defray travel expenses to the Montreal area.

I noticed that today they announced a pretty great looking Satellite for $340 with prizes for the winners in the form of seats + cash - a popular formula we have done in the past as well. It seems that based on 300 entries (3 Day 1s) they estimate 9 seat + cash winners depending on finish. That will be held at Deerfoot from March 29th to April 1at. No fooling.
