It’s funny you quoted me in the Toronto thread about the Heron. I just played Casino Calgary last night for the first time. It was pretty typical. Not overly splashy but pretty decent. I’ll probably go back everyday for the duration of my trip.

Games run basically 24/7 for 1/2nl
So it’s 10% rake up to $5 + $1 for promos?

How does the preflop rake work? Sorry, I’ve only played in Montréal and I'm pretty sure they don't have it there.

Basically, there would be equal rake in any allin pot? This would only affect pots that are lower than $50 (postflop)?

How much would this actually affect the total rake? (Would you rather have 10% rake upto $5 with preflop rake or 10% rake upto $6 no-flop-no-drop?)

the later it is taken the better.

It literally seems to change from dealer to dealer, I have been raked 50 cents from just opening and taking down the blinds to being not raked at all for a $50 + preflop pot.
I do not know what the actual rule is and never wanted to ask so the dealers not raking would still continue not raking preflop lol

The rule largely depends on whether an AGLC Inspector has noticed you don’t take preflop rake or not. They don’t know or care about the game, Inspectors. All they see is a pot in which nothing is going to the charity.

However, dealer error would explain a 50+ pot not being raked more than it doesn’t.

Do the big, 10/20+ PLO games still run? It was at cowboys 3 years ago when I was in town, but sounds like most plo action has moved to Grey Eagle?

It was running at Puré a few nights a week when I was there a month ago. 5/10/20

Have they been playing poker at Alberta casino's lately? With/out plexiglass? If so I guess they've required masks. If so will plexiglass and masks be a thing of the past come Canada Day?

So if you just want to play NLHE which is the best casino in Calgary? And which most often gets higher stake games running?

I wouldn't expect the best NLHE location to also spread PLO because all the more gambly players would play PLO, no?

I'll be traveling through Calgary on a Saturday and looking for the best place to play PLO (5/5 or close to equivalent).
Where's the most likely place to have good PLO action on a Saturday these days? Not interested in NLH.
Thanks in advance!

So are unvaccinated folks back in the casino's playing poker? If so, congrats Albertans.

How is the action in general in Alberta? I've heard the PLO games can get pretty nutty but that was pre covid. Is Calgary or Edmonton the better spot and what stakes typically for NL and PLO?

I am heading to Calgary for 7 weeks during September and October and curious to get peoples thoughts on the poker scene. My buddy there ranks the rooms as follows:

1. Deerfoot
2. Cowboys
3. Pure
4. Cash
5. Grey Eagle

Depends on your game type
Pure - will have the most plo games
Cowboys - best chance of a 2/5 NL game
Deerfoot - is mostly 1/3NL
Cash - is basically only mtts
Grey eagle - just 1/2 NL and been moved to the casino floor since covid ( have to deal with smoke )
Elbow - has a poker room that is all limit games

I don't play live much in Calgary anymore but pure seems like the place to be right now for cash games, Will have both plo and NL running unlike other rooms.

Cowboys is 1/3 nl and sometimes 3/5 nl or 1/3 plo will run

Elbow is all limit poker, As far as I know zero NL games run there, Never actually played there because I don't play limit but as far as I know they run 15/30 limit holdem type games.

The rumor is that cash casino is building a new complex near the airport, to replace their one just south of downtown. I confirmed this with a Google search, but don't know when it's supposed to open.

Anyone have a confirmed opening date?

I have heard late this October or early November, but I'd like to know if I'll be able to get in a session or two there before I leave town on October 28th.

CONFIRMED Open.

ACE Casino Airport

Nice room, as its still new.

Beverage station and complimentary food during the graveyard shift (at least when I was there).

No USB charging ports at the tables and the chairs aren't adjustable.

Rake is atrocious, as usual. Believe it was up to $7 + promo drop.

It's worth it though... players still calling down huge bets with 1 pair.

Find it on Poker Atlas as well.

If you want to see atrocious rake, come to Ontario. More than twice that.

$7 is excellent by anything other than US standards.

Dude those people in Calgary have no idea how good their rake is. No idea.

They live in Canadian live poker mecca and complain.
