The buy-in for 5/5 NL at Burswood is min $100 max $500. Occasionally they run this game with a max $1000 buy-in. They do not spread 5-10 Limit - only 10/20 Limit Holdem (blinds 5 and 10), and occasionally Limit Omaha. The rake for the Limit game is the same as the 5/5 NL game. They occasionally spread 5-10 NL, 5/10PLO and higher during tournaments.

Burswood recently opened a new poker room with 12 tables and they are usually full on weekends with around 3-4 tables spread per limit.

The rents in Perth have been quite high in recent times but seem to be settling down a bit (expect to pay at least 250p/w for a small apartment, but probably more). I am not sure about student sublets - check out http://www.realestate.com.au/ for ideas on rent prices.

no problem. I play there most weekends and during the week when I can get there. I usually play 10/20 Limit but will play 5/5 NL or 2/3 if there are good games.

From earlier in this post, sounded like they were always good games.

But I guess that's true of any casino, on any continent. I have never seen a game that wasn't beatable at 5/5 or lower...not always the best player, but always a few people spewing.

Usually play 100 or 200NL holdem on Party...playing Omaha Hi for fake monies right now...wasting time, god I'm bad, down down down...ahaha, stick me back at the holdem tables.

Ugh. I checked out the new poker room the other day, and it's awful. It's tucked up the back of the casino, as far from the door as you can get, and the fact that you have to walk up a corridor and past a desk makes it look like a private room. You can pretty much forget walk-up drunktards.

The list is still on paper, which makes their "world-class" claim a bit hilarious. It also means you don't get an SMS when your table is ready, and the mikes are as dodgy as ever, so it's not easy to bugger off to the pit games to wait out the 30-player list for 2-3. When I went in, they had 35 down and a dealer sitting at an empty table, but apparently didn't have any $1 chips so they couldn't open it. Buyins and rebuys are still at the table, so there go the promises about speeding up games. There's no rail, either, so you can forget watching a bit of play while you're waiting. The new tables are nice and the new seats are lovely, but they haven't done anything about the awful rules complete lack of dealer training, which in my mind are what really need fixing if they want a better (and more profitable) poker room.

Doesn't sound too promising. Any fish though?

Also, do they have time charge, or is it just rake?

I'll be heading there either Thursday or Friday night.

The 10/20 LHE is the loosest, most passive game I've ever seen. There are some tightish players (but on this table that means they only play about 50% of hands).

No time charges, only the rake previously mentioned. One other thing non-Australians might not be aware of ... dealers are NOT allowed to accept any tips.

You should always wath the dealers, especially since in the last few months there have been a lot of new dealers. (having problems getting staff I think).

Sounds like your first impressions were very similar to mine. The no-SMS thing annoys the crap out of me as my first choice to pass the waiting time is to head to the sports bar, which has no mikes. Even Adelaide's (the bastion of backwardness, if you ask most Perth people) casino has that technology.

Poor location + intimidating entrance + no rail = dramatic drop in the drunktards that make Burswood games so much fun.

Keep an eagle eye on the dealers. They're barely trained at all, and come from the pit, often with no poker experience whatsoever before starting to deal it. Mistakes are very common.

Other than that, nothing changed with the new room re: softness of games or rakes, so the first page of this thread is all still true. Although KKcracked is right — Fridays aren't going to be the party they used to be. Bring back the old parlour!

Hi, i will be going to Perth soon, and will be there for a couple of years, and im looking forward to playing poker in Burswood, since i hear thats the only casino they have around.

Are there any special etiquette or rules that i should know about playing in an Australian casino? For example, i didnt know you cant tip the dealer, although i cant imagine why....

Australian laws. Can't tip dealers at any casino. We think it looks bad. But then, our minimum wage is liveable, and all those dealers are making plenty without tips.

Elsewhere in Perth, there are two pub leagues: APL and WAPL. Full disclosure: I work for WAPL, but I've heard rumours of some very shady dealings at some APL venues ("take what you can grab" rake structure, new players being invited to home games and fleeced), and know that some things they do don't comply with WA gaming laws. I don't know anything about their tournament structures or cash tables. Their grand finals are worth playing if you can find them, but (despite any claims to the contrary made on their website) you don't actually have to qualify to play them. You can rock up on the day, join the league, and play.

WAPL run cash tables (5/5NL, $40-200 buyin, ~7% vig, very loose) and Sit and Go tournaments at all of their pro league tournaments (numbers permitting), but you must play the main pro league tournament to play the cash table. The tournaments are fast enough to be near-crapshoots, and by the time a $10 grand final contribution and a $10 fee is taken out of your $40 buyin, they're not great value, but with $50,000 dead money in the prize pool, it's worth qualifying for the grand final.

Yeah, all the games are at pubs, or occasionally footy/cricket clubs. League = 13-week season with a grand final at the end ($100 buyin for qualifiers, ~160 runners, ~$70k prize pool). They're all over Australia. Where are you coming from?

The APL games are pretty good value but the rake makes it hard to grind a profit. The games are well ran though and some of the venues have multiple cash tables running. The 2/3NL game at Burswood is pretty much the same structure, lower blinds, same bad play and lower rake.

Wow... im not sure if im a tournament kind of player, never played in a real one... I guess this means i'll have to go learn something new again huh...

Played at Burswood during Friday Afternoon.

Security very tight on dress code and I had to go buy some expensive shorts for them to let me in.

Poker room was right at the back but it was extremely nice. Great tables, seats and plasma TV's on every wall.

Unfortunately, because it was early afternoon there was no 2/3 running. In the end i bought in for $400 into the 5-5. Ended up cashing out at just under a $1000 after a profitable session.

Dealers weren't too bad. Rake was very good and no time charge was a welcome. Loose action and alot of huge pots.

LOL, up until about 10 years ago they were trying to attract the high-roller set, and jeans and trainers were also on the banned list. They've since realised that their regular income comes from the video poker degenerates and lowered the standards somewhat. It would still be a shock to anyone who's used to US casinos.
