I think Birmingham needs it own thread, there seems to be a decent interest in poker in Birmingham, but as I am on my own out of my group of friends it's difficult to find a decent scene or regular decent games.

Ay help would be greatly appreciated

When I was at DTD 2 weeks ago I asked about a regular PLO game. Everyone said apart from festival dates at DTD, Birmingham. Is there a regular game in Gentings Star City? What are dealers/cardroom like? NLHE action any good? Rake? comps? (wishful thinking). It seems that Brum has a huge catchment area, so I would imagine the games being pretty good, only time I have played in the midlands (except DTD) was a £10 rebuy in Walsall in 2003 lol

Sorry mods not the right place for this, but bapesta how would you rate the UK cash games to similar stakes in Macao (10/25 25/50 HKD)?? I have a few bits of second hand knowledge of LLNL games being ultra nitty, full of Chinese and Russian teams, and some shady dealers (Had an American in London tell me that he thought he saw two players passing cards, made a huge scene to the dealer, who just stonewalled him and pretended to not speak English....he warned me off big time).....others have said its well run just nitty

Your thoughts?

Hi, does anyone know if there are any 05/1, 1/1 holdem games in Birmingham? I will be there for a month, planning to play 3-5 nights per week. I read there is Grosvenor Casino in Walshall with 05/1 games. Any info appreciated

There is the G Casino in Coventry, just off the M6 Motorway. About 40 mins drive from Birmingham.

They have 50p£1 cash games on Friday and Saturday nights and regular tournaments. Often there are 2 or 3 tables running. The standard of play is relatively soft/weak but not that tight.

Sometimes a £1 £2 cash game also gets up.

The only other one I have heard of is the Broadway card room in Birmingham that someone has already mentioned.

Actionjack's room has opened recently in Star City Birmingham with limits up to 25/50 I believe.

I only really play festival events at Star City but wondered what the standard was like in the cash game if anyone regularly goes? (I would only be playing 1/1, 1/2)

Anyone have information on Broadway's cash games? Twitter feed just says '£50', is this minimum buy in? What are the blinds?

£50 is the min sit down, and it's 1/2
2/5 rarely ever runs. last time it ran was in nov.

Broadways cash is £50-£250. Be prepared for plenty of stations and 8x opening raises.

Best cash action of any kind is at Birmingham Broadway Casino hands down. There is usually atleast 2 £1/£2 NLHE (MIN £50/ Max £400) and atleast 1 £1/£2 PLO 4-5-6 Cards (Min £50/ Max £500)。 PLO usually starts around 7 for the early birds and NLHE usually starts around 7.30-8.00 everyday. Weekends usually get on average 3 NLHE and 2 PLO running through the night. A good mix of players.

Tournaments wise Broadway run 3 £100 Freezeout +1 Rebuys a month which are guaranteed £7500 - £10000. If ya wanna play small tournaments they have dailies too but you also wanna look up Hill Street G Casino too but must stress Broadway is the place for 4-5-6 PLO and has best NLHE cash action in the Midlands if not north of London

2/5 games run depending on interest for both PLO and NLHE although its prob easier to get a NLHE one running esp on weekends

Just realised this thread was a thing. From the last 7 months of playing live I'd probably come up with this analysis for Birmingham.

Casinos

Grosvenor Hill Street

As far as tournaments go in Birmingham, this is the place you want to go for nightly donkaments. The guarantees are usually between £1200-£2400 each night and entry ranges from £25 to £45 along with a 6 Max tournament every Wednesday. They also have implemented growing guarantees where, if the guarantee for any nightly tournament is broken, they increase the guarantee the next week by £100. There is also a monthly £55 tournament with a £6000 guarantee and a monthly £55 4/5/6 card Omaha with a £3000 guarantee. Clock for all tournaments are usually between 25-30 minutes a level and starting stacks are between 15,000-20,000.

As far as the staff go, their dealers and floor managers are by far the best and most vigilant in Birmingham to who listen to the players wants and needs and adjust rulings/schedules to fit said needs.

As far as cash games go this is the weakest aspect of the casino. They have a nightly 25/50p game in the pit downstairs which is 7 handed, but apart from that they don't manage to get any type of £1/1 or £1/2 game going very often which means if you're out early, you only have the option of going to another casino or simply playing 25/50p downstairs.

Finally as far as the players go, they are mainly regulars who go 2-3 times a week, usually middle aged and are all friendly with each other so because of this, the atmosphere is usually pretty fun. As far as skill levels they are pretty standard fish and final tabling really isn't hard for any competent player especially with average stacks never being below 15-20bb. On cash players are usually £50-100 punters are £1/£2 which makes the games pretty terrible to play especially considering the rake is a bigger percentage if the big pots are only hitting £400-£500 max.

Rake is as follows;
25/50p (7 handed) - 10% capped at £2
£1/£1 (9 handed) - 5% capped at £5
£1/£2 (9 handed) - 5% capped at £3

Although the rake is pretty amazing for a casino they still can't muster up cash game tables even though they usually have the biggest tournament fields in Birmingham

Broadway Casino

I don't think anyone can dispute that Broadway is the best place to play cash in Birmingham. Whether it's Holdem of Omaha, almost every day there is at least one of each of these running past 9PM and the don't break until at least 5AM. Games are 10 handed also. Broadway offers mostly £1/2 Holdem/Omaha but sometimes £2/£5 games will come up depending on who is there. Max/min buy in for Holdem is £400/£50 for £1/£2 and £1000/£100 for £2/£5 (I think.) Max/min buy in £1/2 Omaha is £500/£50 and £2/5 is ?????.

Sessions are as follows
£1/2 Holdem/Omaha (10 handed) - £5/hour
£2/5 Holdem/Omaha (10 handed) - £8/hour

As far as tournaments, this is where Broadway really slips up since the management team is no where near as good as Hill Street and because of this the tournament structures are pretty poor with 15 minute clocks and blind levels that they skip entirely. They have also scrapped guarantees in their tournaments recently so I expect other Birmingham casinos will benefit from this greatly from the loss of players there. The only thing they offer guarantees on now are their 3 monthly £110 tournaments which are £7500, £7500 and £10,000 as guarantees.

Management as I've stated is pretty poor there to be honest, on the cash game side at least. They don't really make much effort to learn who you are or even your name unlike Hill Street until you become a regular. This is a pretty big flaw as part of their cash games, for every 10 hours you play there you are supposed to receive a free £5 food voucher however they are clearly not documenting this very well as I got my first voucher after about 80 hours of play and last month when I put 62 hours in, I only received 2 vouchers instead of 6. Their rulings aren't very consistent either with string betting/calling out of turn rules usually changing monthly it seems.

Finally the players are also pretty standard fish in tournaments there, not really different from Grosvenor in that sense. However in cash, the players range from completely awful rec players who have never been on a strategy site in their lives to very solid pros, and unlike Hill Street, they all sit pretty deep ranging from £100-£400. If you start talking to cash game players you can find out pretty quickly who actually knows how to play Poker and who doesn't. Because of this, even though I feel this casino is pretty inferior to Hill Street, if you want to start making decent money whilst playing, the bulk of your time should be spent here playing cash.

Star City A.K.A Add-On City

Whilst I haven't spent too much time at Star City so I can't give you too much info on how the tournaments and structures is run, almost every daily tournament has an add on period during the break. This is pretty irritating as, because of this a lot of the standard fish won't add on and thus the prize pools will be lower than other places and personally I think add ons at these types of tournaments are pointless, but that's just a personal gripe I have. One tournament I think is pretty good that they run however is a monthly £110 + £100 optional add on with a £15,000 guarantee which they used to give out lots of tickets to in previous promotions which pumped the prize pool up to £20-25k. Clock is 30 mins day 1 and 45 on day 2 also.

As far as cash games, Star is the only casino to put real promotions on their games in order to attract players for Holdem/Omaha. These include;
- A nightly promotion where the top 4 players who have won the most raked pots get £25 each in tournaments vouchers which can be used on bigger events like the GPS Series.

- A weekly promotion every Wednesday where they give £1000 cash top the top 3 players who have won the most pots of the night (1st - £500, 2nd - £300, 3rd - £200)

However, whilst these promotions seem great, unfortunately the players are completely driven people away because of the rake which is as follows.

25p/50p (9 handed) - 10% capped at £10 (yes £10)
50p/£1 (9 handed) - 5% capped at £5
£1/£2 (9 handed) - £3 rake on ANY pot over £20

These games are extremely hard to beat regardless of the promotions. I can't imagine anything worse in cash than playing £1/£2, raising to £7 and getting 2 callers, just to C-bet and take it down where the £21 in the middle is getting raked for £3.

As far as people, again, there's not much difference from the other Casinos.

Grosvenor Walsall

This is the only casino that is based outside of central Birmingham on Junction 10. This casino generally offers a smaller stakes in tournaments with lower buyins and guarantees on weekdays but decent ones on weekends. They also have a £110 tournament with a £10k guarantee every bank holiday Monday (30 min clock) along with hosting bigger events such as GUKPTs and 2525s.

As far as cash goes, it's also pretty small usually playing either 50p/£1 (10% capped at £5) or £1/£1 (5% capped at £5.) They also have a bad beat jackpot where every hand is raked 50p which is separate to the normal rake. The only promotion they do as far as I know is offer rake free cards (until 12PM) to the first three people that sign up for cash, the BBJ rake has to still be paid though.

As far as the people it seems pretty similar to the Hill Street casino with not too many high rollers or whales playing there. This casino is mainly for locals who don't want to go up to Birmingham and travel 30+ minutes to play.

The only other thing worth mentioning is the facebook page "Poker Doctor" which is a Birmingham poker group which gives updates by the players, not the casinos, on who is playing, how many people or issues that arise in terms of rulings (along with a lot of trolls)

If theres anything I missed feel free to post. I know there is enough 2+2ers from Birmingham anyway but hopefully this is seen as useful.

Hi!

I just moved to Birmingham and I am looking for some live cashgame action.
I read the analysis about the casinos above, but I think that is a little bit old.

Could somebody give me an updated information about the live poker here?

I mostly play NL50 and NL100 SH online. I looking for action at 1/2 or above.
Still can be found here a good live action or mostly regwars?
