This. I've lived in very central locations in Tokyo, London, NY, Hong Kong and Boston, and driving / parking is a massive PITA, and public transportation in most of those cities is excellent.
Why bother with buying a car, insurance, tax, parking fees, horrible traffic, not being able to drink when I go out etc, when public transportation is so convenient (most of the time)?
I never bothered with a car when I lived downtown, never even bothered with a driver's license for well over 20 years.
Only got a driver's license after getting a family and moving to a house outside the city.
I personally hate driving - wasted time behind the wheel that you can't spend doing anything else.
Autonomous-driving cars can't get here fast enough.
