142 runners, 15 pays.

At 18 left we bogged down and no eliminations for at least a 1/2 hour, a deal was quickly worked out to shave some of first place and extend the $200 min payout to 18 places. Great! Well, it didn't help. Another 1/2 hour goes by and we're still at 15 left or so. It's well after midnight, people want to go home so a chop was attempted to be brokered at the 10K/20K blind level since we're no longer playing poker but "shove and pray". One doofus wearing a PokerStars shirt refuses the deal with just over 5BB's because "he's got less chips than me, and so does he, and so does he..." Meanwhile the guy to his immediate left has the only true stack left, and he's a good player (he was down to 2000 chips an hour earlier).

The deal was, 2K for the chip leader and everyone else gets 1000 or so and we go home.

He wouldn't budge. We upped it to 2K for first, 1200 for the "PokerStar" and 900 for the rest of us. STILL NO DEAL.

The TD say "no more stopping the clock til the final table" and we play on. And you KNOW how much the TD loves to encourage the chops. - "Time is your enemy, players."

Within five hands, I double up to 80K... and then I get JJ and call a shove and lose to AQ... leaving me less than 1 big blind. I went out in 13th for $392.

So yes, the deals are still happening. AND THEY SHOULD HAPPEN. We all could've walked out of there with good money, but one dork cost some of us a decent payday.

I've complained about the deal-making in the past too, but when the blinds are 10K/20K and stacks are almost without exception in the five big blind range, it's pretty ridiculous NOT to make a deal IMO.

Look at badbeatslayer, Luke Vrabel in that big Sunday Million... he made a 9-way deal at the final table because he knew it was more important to lock up a good, if not great, payday at that point because VARIANCE IS A BEEYATCH.

I wonder where the PokerStar ended up finishing last night. If there's karma in the world, he went out in 11th for the same $392 booby prize I got.
Sounds like good negotiating to me. If he doesn't feel it's in his best interest, then he shouldn't deal. End of story, move on.

BTW, if you win that race, ship the tourney, and he goes out early, are you happy?

IMO, if this is the case, the players aren't playing very well. Why would someone want to make a deal with people who are clearly playing way too tight.

Duh, its all donks in a $130 live tournament. The better players are playing online or in a cash game.

EUREKA - I finally earned some comps. Saturday night I hit an improbable parlay - I remembered to swipe on the way out and the machine was working.
So I'm on the way to riches.

I'm sure many of you know [name removed] at the front checkin desk. When she saw what had registered on my card she said "you know I'm pretty sure I've seen you play here before but there is nothing on record for you". I gave her a short version and she offered to get me a one-time comp, but since I was on the way home I declined. Still gesture much appreciated.

Live tournaments are full of donks. Last friday three out of towners showed up in the morning tournament and shoved every hand that was folded to them while everyone was still 50bbs deep. I immediately bought in and caught the biggest donk pushing with 67o when I had AJo, Flop K85, turn T, river 4...

BTW, the parking has been horrendous on weekend evenings if they have an event. Last saturday, at 6:30 pm, the poker room garage was already full, CAZ blocked off the other covered parking garage and valet was full. I was lucky to get one of the last spots in the front lot, about a mile away in the rain.

Also for weird changes in rulings, the time games now make you pay time if you sit in the first 15 minutes of a down. It used to be 5 minutes. The weird part is that our 40-80 game was 7 handed, and they forced an out of town player to stand around and wait 15 minutes to get into a game with no list, with two seats that weren't going to pay anyways.

I could understand the policy if there is a list to get into the game, but not when we are trying to keep the game going and would like welcome a new fish (of course it turns out this particular "fish" holds a bracelet, so we ran way worse than expectation on unknown tourists that night). He's played everywhere, and said he'd never heard of a 15 minute rule before.

On the comps, is it true they expire within 5 days? This is what I was told by the floor. If true, then they would be entirely worthless to someone like me who only plays on the weekend.

First, the food comps don't auto print out unless you played 8+ hours in a particular day. If you've accumulated a bunch of hours w/o a ticket printing out you can ask the board ppl to write one for you on the day of your visit. This is what I typically do bec I don't often play 8 hours straight.

Second, I think that if you explain the problem to a senior manager they will fix it for you. I'd ask them to re-write your comp ticket to bring it up to date.

Nothing we don't see five nights a week with him. He's all fun, all the time.

If it's really you (and I believe ya)... congrats for sticking to your guns and taking it down.

I do regret using the term "doofus". I often regret my posts. LOL. You are obv a good player and more importantly you have the courage of your convictions.

How the heck did you overcome G's (can't mention names obv) big stack to your immediate left?

I def played way too tight at the end there. Live and (never) learn!

I hope this doesn't get me banned, but whatever. Last week I saw a guy at a green chip cash table, and I recognized him from WSOP ME telecasts... he used to be a big guy but lost a lot of weight. His nickname is associated with lightning... if you know what I mean. Does he live in Phoenix and play at CAZ regularly? Was pretty cool to see a face that I knew... almost as cool as seeing the Chainsaw come play in our State Champ.

I think thunder keller qualifies as famous enough to mention by name itt.

He's a long time CA reg. There's an apocryphal story that at one time he had all of CA's black chips in his trunk.

im not sure wether he lives in vegas now or still in the phoenix area.

He plays green chips five days a week. Just say hi, he won't mind. Last week some kid saw him in the game, came running up with an autograph kept in his wallet that the bracelet winner signed for him a few years ago. We really enjoy giving him a hard time about that, which as always he took very amiably.

And lightning is his brother, polar opposites just like their nicknames.

Standard. And that is why I have been forced to conclude after five years of daily play that tournament poker is an utterly silly and stupid hobby.

Yeah I know "it all evens out" in the long run. Right. I'm only alive for another 15 years or so that "long run" better hurry the F up!

I've never won an online MTT. Closest I ever got was Stars $3 rebuy, 7200+ runners.. I played solid for 11 hours and get to HU with 35M-6M chip lead. I try to close it out quickly but we soon end up tied at 20M apiece. Villian shoves all 20M pre w/A6o. Stupid or not, I call w/A7o. The 6 on the turn costs me $3K as I take 6K for second and villian get 9K for first. FML.

Yeah, I'm sure that 3K in lost profit will "even out in the long run". I will never regain that much EVER at the stakes I play.

Now you see why I'm all for chopping. Variance sucks, and somehow I seem to have a knack for ending up on the wrong end of it.

Anyhow... welcome back from your self-ban, DC. I think I need to self-ban myself from poker for my own sanity and find a less aggravating, less frustrating, less luck-filled hobby.

Cool story bro. The stuff of which legends are made!

And FWIW, IMO Thunder should've stayed the way he was... BIG. He had that special something most of us nameless, faceless donks don't and won't ever have... an image bordering on icon status. Hell, even I recognized him the moment I walked by his table.

I believe the doctors told him it was necessary, and he did the staple thing. It was a segment on a WSOP broadcast a few years ago.

Thank god we have casinos with poker rooms in Arizona.

I'd sure hate to live in a state without Indian land right about now.

FML, I ALMOST withdrew my entire bankroll from Stars this past week. All I had to do was click the "confirm" button.

I told you I always end up on the wrong side of variance.

I do make good decisions sometimes tho. I let my roll on Full Tilt drop to zero and never reloaded and walked away. Same for Cake and Bodog. Wish I had done the same on Stars.

That begs the question if someone loses his famous player status after a while of non-famousity. 4 should keep a running list of who can be named in posts to clear up the ambiguity.

On this forum there is no ambiguity. If you use the name of a player or casino employee, you will be infracted, and if you do it too often, you will be banned.

I guess I got my first infraction yesterday for mentioning a casino employee. How many strikes do you get?
