Hi all,

I'm about to move to the Chicago area and plan to put some serious volume in at the Horseshoe. The question that I have is, on average, how bad is the smoking?

I don't find the Horseshoe poker room to be overly smoky 'in general' .. especially if you play some of the larger stakes which play towards the back of the room. I have a pretty sensitive nose, but also a high tolerance for such things. I'm not a reg though, so they may have other ideas about it. GL

the actual poker room is fine. There are only 2-5 tables that are along the main rail of the general casino that can get pretty bad. However, the walk from entry to the actual room is pretty bad depending on time/day.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I definitely appreciate it. I primarily plan on playing 2/5, so hopefully most of those tables are towards the back.

Does any one know if the room in Joliet runs 2/5 on weekends and how the games compare to Hammond?

I've had really good success in Joliet @ Harrah's. 2/5 is running 'as we speak' (Bravo app) so I don't think getting a table on the weekend is too hard.

I've never been to Hollywood (Aurora) so I can't speak of their action. GL

Joliet is risky. Yes, they get 2/5 games going. However, its usually 1 table. The most I have ever seen in the last year is 2.

The game is not as wild as the shoe. Most players are playing for the BBJ. The biggest problem is the game usually breaks early, and you are left with going home or playing $1/$2.

Shoe always has at least 1 or 2 games going 24 hours per day and I have seen 7 to 9 on a weekend.

Generally, the 'high stakes' area in the back is where you'll see 5/10 NL, 1/2/5 PLO, and mid to high stakes limit games, like the 50/100 mixed, or 30/60 O8, though I've seen games as small as 5/10 O8 played up there, too. There are even higher stakes available behind the doors, also upstairs, like 5/10 PLO. Enjoy!

IIRC, The 1/2 PLO is $60-$500, but don't take my word for it; it's been ages since I sat in that game.
A buy-in of $100 is totally standard at 1/2 PLO. Raise and shove the flop on the first decent hand you get. Miss. Re-buy. Rinse. Repeat. OR Double up or better and THEN play poker.

PLO IS $100-500. Can confirm min buying is standard.

I think the 2/5 was moved up to $800 max BI the last time I was there. GL

I wish they would make the 1/2 300 max

300 max would be really tiny for that game

That's the point .. If you sit down and effectively have 10-15bb when the table is playing 1-2-16 every hand PF it would be nice to have even 5-10 more bb when you sit down. GL

The buy-in structures are fine. If you want to put more money on the table, then play a bigger game. 5/T runs pretty much everyday.

As someone who plays high stakes, your response is not only condescending but wrong

Come on over to Motor City and play in the 5-10-20 game that runs on Friday and Saturday where the BI is 800-3000. More specifically sit down at the 5-6 handed must-move and face off against 2-3 stacks of 40bb hoping to hit it big before they go up to the 'varsity' table where they can add-on to catch up with those stacks.

This is similar to sitting down to a 1-2 that has people opening for 15-20 when they sit down with 100-200.

Although I dislike it when people post 'bb' in the strat posts it really is the way you need to look at poker decisions. GL

small stakes games are not designed for people who want a deep game. recs drive it and are raked by it. the higher the bb buyin, the quicker the recs go broke, the less rake the room makes.

yes it's arrogant to say find a bigger game, but it's the truth. ratio of rake to stack depth decreases as you move up.

This perfectly describes a private PLO game I play.

I'd actually like to see the 1-2 PLO get smaller: ditch the $5 bring in, open raise would be $7-8. Drop the max buy to $300.

Most people buy into 1-2 NL for less than $100 anyway.

May not become an issue at a larger casino, but I saw a room try to start some smaller PLO tables in hopes of creating a greater interest in them. But the idiot regs from the higher stakes would sit down while wait-listing the other game and run them over ... not the best way to grow a customer base. GL

That's what it used to be back in like 2012-2014. True pot pre. And then bets of $5 post. It has its merits but also made the game slower.
