4-8 Limit players love good promotions. This month, the promotions are not nearly what they were last month. In July on Fridays, they were giving away $300/20 minutes from 10a-3a. This month they are giving away $50 per jackpot eligible Texas HoldEm table (4-8 LHE 1-2, 2-5 NL).

Today at 11 AM, only 3 1-2 tables were going so the high hand is $150/hour. 4-8 players won't play for this tiny promotion. The first 4-8 Limit game should open by 1 to 2 PM Friday. Expect 2-3 tables of 4-8 games going by 8pm tonight. Same goes for Saturday. Since there is no reason to play at 10 AM, 4-8 players aren't showing up until later in the day.

How are they here about when you ask for a table change? Do you normally just go up to the podium and request one? I normally just play wherever I'm at and haven't asked for a table change before. Lately although I have been getting in some nitty unbearable tables during promo times.

Not playing here tonight because of a frustrating episode that occurred last Thursday. There were about 12 people on the 5-5 PLO list. At least several of those people had come to the casino specifically to play 5-5. The floor does a 5-5 PLO interest check and 10 people say they want to play. However, they then refuse to call the game because they don't want to "break a game (i.e., the 2-2 PLO) to start a game." Half the 2-2 game consisted of people who would have much preferred 5-5 but were sitting in the 2-2 b/c they had no better option available.

That should not be how it works. 2-2 PLO gets off almost every day. 5-5 does not. I understand that a couple of people would have been upset had starting a 5-5 broke the 2-2, but you're already upsetting a full lineup of people by not calling a game with a full list that probably everyone on that list would prefer to play. By not starting a 5-5 game under such circumstances you're only further hurting a game that's been struggling to get off lately for the benefit of a game that has been getting off regularly. That can't be good for the longterm health of the room.

They eventually called a 5-5 game maybe 2 hours later, but by that point several people, including me, had already left and multiple people had voiced their frustration with the floor. Rather than go to Hollywood tonight and risk the same thing happening (having noticed a 2-2 was running) I've decided to just go ahead and stay home and know other people have done the same. Please stop adhering to this "not wanting to break a game to start a game" BS. If you have a full lineup of people preferring to play a game, you should simply call that game, as I believe most poker rooms do.

There is an easy solution to this that I see in 'some' rooms, but not all. You make 5/5 'The game of the Day' and explain to any other tables that may be affected in those terms.

I can tell you that most rooms don't simply start up a game whenever there are 10 waiting, especially if they are pulling from other open tables. We have a similar problem where I play most of the time. Thursday is PLO day, and the room knows this, but on Friday the 2/5 NL gets going 'early' and then the PLO guys want to start up a game and it takes 4-6 away from 2/5 and crushes the 2/5 list and that can lead to both games sucking until one of them breaks.

Another solution to this is to start the new game short-handed at 6 or 7 in an effort to make sure that the open table doesn't collapse. Most 'higher' stake players don't care about playing short later in the night so you can start short until both lists are healthy and go from there.

The 'game of the day' idea works, I've seen it. The players who start the game at X:xx o'clock are the first on the list for the following week and then others can fill in from there. I've seen over 30 names on a list for various games. Seats are held for 15 minutes past start time and then the list kicks in from there.

So instead of a boycott ... and showing them they were right to keep the 'loyal' 2/2 game going ... approach them with a solution ..
1) Start short
2) Make it a 'game of the day' ... GL

I think there was someone on twitter putting that game together. I don't want to mention names because 2+2 rules etc but it shouldn't be hard to find. Of course, that's if this is even the same thing I saw the other night. I don't follow much of that stuff.

Yes, the game was organized in advance and there was a full 8 handed game as of the start time with 3 additional people hopping in.

The mix is open for debate but today we played LHE / O8 / Super Stud8 / 5 Card Omaha Hi / Stud Hi / Deuce to Seven Triple Draw. All limit 30-60.

Any questions, feel free to ask in here or PM me.

Probably not. But it will likely be a recurring thing on a semi-regular basis (i.e. once or twice a month).

Not sure how sustainable a game that large will be in Columbus? Slightly smaller stakes and I'd be game for ir every single time.

Think if it's a more regular, publicised game then it may attract some players from Cleveland, Cincy, Pittsburgh areas.

Seems like the poker in Columbus is dying! I don't go as much as I used to go because I recently got a new job at the Prions....but the last few times I've went, the action seems about half of what it used to be, less tables, fewer higher limit games running.
The promotions for the room aren't that great anymore either. Is it just me or have you all noticed the same thing?

Have people gone broke or what? I know the rake is a killer. Is the Shart Tank taking a hit too or just Hollywood? Looks like there are fewer games running in Cincy as well?

I have not been to Columbus in a very long time but their rake and buy-in structures were guaranteed to decimate their player pools (in the smaller pot raked games). Good poker room managers know that the goal is to keep players in action for as long as possible. When you try to maximize profits in the short run it is usually at the detriment of the long run.

I do find it interesting though that their time rake is smaller than anywhere else I've seen in the country. In Las Vegas where I play time charges start at $7 per half and go all the way up to $15 for the super high stakes games. $5 for any time game is extremely low.

$6 is still very low. Time charges in Las Vegas start at $7 and the game I usually play is $8 per half. I'd take $6 per half in literally any game. Time rake is much, much cheaper than pot rake.

I'm aware. Given you brought up time rake, I figured it was only appropriate to note the change for those who don't yet know.

FYI, we'll be playing 30-60 limit mixed again on Monday for anyone interested. We will choose the games to be played at the start of the game-- basically, everyone gets to pick a game and we will play it unless a majority of the table objects. Feel free to PM me if you have additional questions.

Is the sharktank still open? I liked going there because they didn't take rake from pots. I haven't been since they got new owners though....in fact I recently saw one of their owners at the casino playing...that's why I ask if they are still open.

I like that it's bringing in new or infrequent players but it's pretty much a kick in the nuts for regs, especially ones who like to play bigger.
..and here we go again. These promos are the worst.
