One of the last times I was at Derby, I lost a pot to a player with no cards. I semibluff raised on the turn with a low straight flush draw, effectively pushing but left 4 dollars behind, and villian calls. The river bricks, and I throw my last 4 out because why not? Those four dollars were going in anyway if I wasn't being cheeky, and it gives me some fold equity, however small, if I miss. It practically has to work once in a lifetime to be profitable, and even if it isn't, it's four dollars. Villain says "I missed", shows a higher flush draw, and tosses it face down in the muck. As I always do, I wait until the dealer pushes me the pot to relinquish my hand, and I toss them face up in the muck and say "so did I". A few seconds later, villain yells "I said call!". Dealer immediately calls floor, and you know who awards pot to villain because "cards speak, always". Yes, apparently even if you do not call the bet and muck your hand.
if you're willing to go drink for drink with me i'll get you into the smaller private game (5/10+) -- not the real big game --at least one time. runs tuesdays and fridays.
Ran into what I consider a strange house rule at Derby, in tournament. The dealer called a misdeal when she accidentally flipped up the second card dealt to the big blind (all players had one card already, SB had two). Their house rule is that if any of the cards dealt to the blinds get exposed during the deal - not just the first two cards off the deck - then it's a misdeal. It's no big deal, but I was just wondering what the reasoning for this is (which neither the dealer nor the brugh could answer). Seems like it's just a misinterpretation of the first-two cards off the deck dealt to the blinds rule.
I played at Derby and noticed a couple other weird house rules that nobody could explain other than to say "that's how we do it here". "That's how we've always done it" is a stupid reason for a lot of rules, procedure and practices everywhere inside and outside of poker. Hasn't anyone ever heard of making things better as time goes by?
the good: 257 person turnout in the 260.00 tourney 14k up top, took 10 hours to get in the money though.
the bad: player at the table got his wallet stolen out of his zipped backpack attached to his chair and security was zero help with cameras helping the player. security still a huge issue there as parking lot reminds me of palm beach especially on busy days when you have to park a good 5 min walk away.
If you want 2/5 Hard Rock really is the only option. Sometimes a 2/5 game gets going in Derby but it's basically if it's 9 players, 5 of them are best friends, stake each other, etc.... Hard Rock usually has 5 or 6 different 2-5 tables running during any normal time you want to play, and is a much better bet.
Derby Lane is sharing their parking lot with hundreds of power company trucks and tree service trucks as one of the staging and parking locations for Hurricane Irma resotration efforts.
Anyone played here lately? Used to be my go to room, but ever since they changed the 1-1 to 1-2, it seems like it killed a lot of the 1-3 action (Which was the juiciest game in town by far I think) Anyone been lately? Last two times I went, it was terrible....
I am hoping you get some replies. I might be in Florida soon and was contemplating playing either at Derby or at Seminole Hard Rock. Trying to figure out which would be better as far as game selection.
Hard Rock, by a long shot. (Hence this thread having one post in the last 10 months.) You can check their current games on Bravo and check Derby's on Poker Atlas. Keep in mind when you see some bizarre sounding games listed on Atlas (one card poker, for example) it's because they list tables games as well as poker.
Thanks. That's what I figured at first, but then in the Hard Rock thread I saw a bunch of people talking about parking garage chaos and shifting to Derby and whatnot, and it seemed maybe that was the way the wind was blowing.
I'm probably staying in St Petersburg, so Derby would be more convenient. I mostly want to get into a decent game efficiently, rather than spending a ton of time in transit or waiting on a list.
Thanks also for the headsup on Poker Atlas. I saw Derby wasn't on Bravo, but didn't realize there was a different app they utilized.

Reason: Poker Atlas

The Hard Rock dropped the parking garage fee over a year ago. It just shows how infrequently people post in this thread.
