Am I an idiot? Am I an idiot?

09-22-2016 , 11:45 AM
I may be an idiot for not converting the hand history correctly but this is my first post so noob entitlement please - be gentle.

I was playing in a 45 player SNG on PokerStars the other day and the following hand took place: It was folded to me in the Hijack and I raised to 520 (2.5x-ish) with A4s. The button re-raised leaving me 864 to call with the pot standing at 2404 giving me nearly 3:1 on my money. I figured this was good enough odds to see a flop, and if I missed, I could happily muck. I flopped the nut flush, checked to induce, 3-bet shoved and got called to take down a decent pot. Before the player left the table he typed ‘lol’, ‘idiot’ into the chat.

I took umbrage at this as I thought my play was pretty reasonable; what do you think? Am I an idiot, or did I play it correctly?

you should fold this hand preflop. even though your odds are reasonable, you are out of position with a hand that is easily dominated and you are not deep enough (lower implied odds) for your flush.

edit: its a good 4bet bluff candidate vs an aggro button.

    agreed.

OP: If you were deeper this would be a good call, but not in this format with your stack.

Thanks. Was primarily an attempt to take the blinds but I thought my stack justified the call.

    Thanks for the advice.

Other people are right that this shouldn't be a call - you have odds to call and "hit" flop but you don't know what "hitting" is a lot of the time. So the flop comes A high - bad luck, he has AK. The flop comes 742? Bad luck, he has QQ. Note in both of those examples he does know that he hit - if you reverse the holding then he also knows he didn't hit, so you are going to lose out postflop a lot of the time, although the board that came is nice obviously.

Having said that, this hardly counts as a uniquely bad play at $3.50 level, so I don't think calling you an idiot in chat is called for.

    Thanks.

Not sure it is ever called for (even if justified!) but I take your point.

Obviously a loose call, I think is the message I am getting. But hey, I hit so I must be a genius right?

    Absolutely.

Telling us the contents of his hand will probably shed a little light on the "lol" "idiot" chat. I'm guessing he had 10s through AA and was mad.

Don't fret over chat abuse. If your gonna make a post every time you take an abuse in chat you'll be at 10k by years end.

its prob. also worth noting that your preflop sizing is quite large given the bb only has 11.2 bb's your hand plays ok post so getting alil more FE vs the bb isnt as good as making ur steals cheaper

fold to 3bet oop / 4bet shove it in vs aggro Hungarian; Brazilian regs

I actually think that flatting is okay, especially since the hand is suited. It is a good candidate to 4 bet bluff shove with, but I think folding here is a mistake. You sometimes need to get into messy spots to play profitable poker, and I don't think you should avoid an action because some of its outcomes will be difficult.

Blow him a kiss in chat next time and say you put him on KQ pre and were trapping.
