Checks actually CAN clear in a matter of days, whether your bank puts a hold on the check is simply out of precaution and because it is an international check. My check from Lock cleared in 2 days. How? I called my bank and double, triple, quadruple clarified that the funds were not just "available for use" but that the check had cleared--being very careful to distinguish between the two.
Whether a bank puts a hold on the check is because of many factors: 1) what is your past relationship with that bank, 2) the $ amount of the check, and 3) how big the bank is. With smaller/regional banks, your check is more likely to be put on hold.
I have never had a problem with a Lock Poker check.
Poker sites can take our money instantly because we can deposit using credit cards. It takes a while to get money off because they cannot simply put money back on a credit card. Now, if you use Western Union--yes, it can be smooth sailing on both the depositing and withdrawal side of the transaction so zingaro's point is not valid with this method.
