Btw I'm not talking about subtle microaggressions or whatever the kids talk about these days since I'm not even really capable of detecting those, but more like in your face, what the **** are you doing in my country kind of attitude or waiters just ignoring you for an hour plus at a mostly empty restaurant or people being suddenly nicer when they realize I'm with a white person, overt hostility like randoms throwing things at you. I guess I suck at looking harmless.

Which is why its subtle. Racism isn't all negative, nor it is it overt. Trivialization of experience is just as real as "racism" as overt as the one drop rule. Are they equally nefarious? Obv not.

Again, it may have just been a total joke which I'd put down as somewhat nondescript.

As a white male who grew up in a pretty diverse DC suburb and lived a good chunk of time in the South/Midwest I was always a bit uncomfortable with the culture there. Everyone was much more likely to hang out predominantly with their own racial groups. Of course even in DC that happens a lot. There are parties/hangouts that are predominantly black or Hispanic and you can definitely expect each to have a unique feel culturally. But the difference is you can show up to those places even if you don't fit into that culture and nobody thinks anything of it. You'd get a lot of weird looks for that in the places I've lived in the South or Midwest. I always felt like I was missing out on a lot. I dunno how that translates if you're a minority in either of those places but I think that's an accurate assessment of the difference from my perspective.

There is nothing racist about saying "the only 'racial/ethnically dividing' thing I can think of having to do with my friend is his access to ethnic food that I didn't have, and he didn't share it with me, so I went 20 years without experiencing it."

Period, full stop.

Pointing out people are different isn't some subtle microaggression. People are different, ethnicities are a real thing.

Pointing out the only difference is their delicious cuisine likely makes you incredibly obtuse or incapable of empathy.

Period, full stop.

Is it that hard to imagine there are places where people aren't very racist?

Do you have a foreign accent? In my experience this happens more frequently to people who're foreign more than just looking different. (Obv worst case is you're foreign and look it!!!)

So a micro aggression would be like Chris Rock asking a random asian kid if he's good at math. Trotting out three of them and making racist jokes is just full on bigotry.

When I think of places that aren't racist, I totally think of being the only person in Kansas who is Asian.

What if we remove the word "racist" and call it "lack of empathy" or "poor understanding of how someone else feels"? (He may not have actually known the kid really well!)

But the idea that what he said is not loaded with prejudice is just completely ridiculous. (What if he was Malay? Their food sucks.)

I think there's some kind of accent but it's pretty subtle, not particularly foreign and not all that correlated with my appearance. Also most cases I was thinking of basically happened without them having a chance to hear me speak.

That's exactly what suzzer said though - he said he didn't think much of it then but now that he thinks about it, he realizes he doesn't actually know how the guy felt.

You're reading far too much into a joke that was partially intended to poke fun at what white people think of asians and asian food - it wasn't that funny but that's why he writes programs for a living.

I never told him I thought his food smelled weird. I just happened to be in his house a couple times and smelled it. We weren't ever good enough friends for me to get invited over for dinner. I just wish I had tried Korean food a lot sooner. 8-year-olds in the midwest in the 80s tend to be not very adventurous eaters. Sweet & sour pork is very exotic for us.

anyone have thoughts on webpack vs jspm? we might be doing something totally new with isomorphic react but haven't fully decided on es6 module loading

i heard jspm is really really slow on dev once you get to a few hundred js files, is that true?

also it seems documentation is total junk with both...kinda spoiled by Django docs

I've been using webpack for almost a year. It's the best toolchain I've used in this category of tools.

It has great support for hot reloading react code, es6 and everything else you'd expect.

This is another reason I don't like places outside of large metros on the coast - ethnic food options are kind of terrible and I like to eat everything. It's massively comforting for my fat cells to know that pretty much any kind of food is accessible and I don't really have to compromise on variety or quality. Though one thing that's relatively and surprisingly rare in NYC is good deep-dish pizza.

shoe,

have you used browserify and related tools? how did you like that route compared with webpack?

Kansas City has gotten much much more cosmopolitan than when I grew up. There's about everything you can imagine, and it's decent - although obviously not in the variety or quality of say K-town in LA. And best BBQ in the world of course.

Lmk if you ever go there. I'll set you up with a bunch of great places to eat. Every time I go back it seems to be more and more of a foodie paradise. They have the advantage of being surrounded by endless farm/ranch land. So everyone is doing some kind of artisanal sheep cheese farm or something now.

Will definitely take up on this if I ever find myself in KC. Kind of hard to read all this on a diet lol.
