Read an lwn.net article indicating that Linux Mint seems to be taking a lot of market share from Ubuntu at the moment.
Apparently those guys are taking Gnome 3 and writing a shell to make it behave a lot like Gnome 2 as part of the transition. I'm just about done with Unity now so i'll be giving both Kubuntu and Mint a go in the next few months.

Not really programming related... but what are the advantages of using linux as opposed to the 2 big operating systems? I tried to get into linux when I was much younger but didn't have the patience to learn and it put me on major tilt when it took an hour to install a program.

For me, the 2 big ones are

In reality, most people who use linux are developers and they use it because the tools the need (or the environment they use) require a linux os.
My favourite part of linux (besides MrWoosters examples) as both user and developer is the packaging and update system.
Having centralised software libraries available via a single command, that also does dependency resolution is a massive time saver. In addition, all your software is updated using the same mechanism. Consider how many individual websites/download sites and individual software installations you would need to do to update every piece of software on your Windows box to the latest version. On most linux installations this is a 1 liner.
