I don't get the new playground-forum. *

Also - has there ever been a playground-forum that didn't go permanent afterwards?

Very happy to see this one get a permanent place though

*Disclaimer - I'm somewhat drunk and there are probably a quite a few things I wouldn't get atm, but 'mortar and brick'?.

Oh, yes, lots of dead ones. I think there was one an giving advice or something, then there was one dedicated to a specific poster, but apparently this was done out of spite.

Hey guys,

got a question regarding a website parser. I googled a bit, found some, but I cant get them to run on Win7.

Anyone got an idea why? Or can recommend me another parser?

What do you mean by parser? I have a scraper that I've used at work that crawls and saves the HTML/images/css/js files for you. I forget what it's called, but can check tomorrow if that's what you are looking for.

It definitely works on Windows 7.

I got a website and want to get some things from that site (certain information, some links, etc.).

I thought this was a parser, maybe it's a scraper. I dont want to get the files as a whole, I want specific information from the website.

EDIT: Actually after reading your other post this might not be what you want.

That's a good way of doing it tbh, download it to disk then scrape it. For anyone reading who's using ASP.net/C# check out the HTML agility pack:

http://htmlagilitypack.codeplex.com/

Very good for reading DOM data!

Some of you might find this funny, on my site I've been doing user badges to help encourage people to engage and to help people discover features, one of the badges is called 'RTFM':

http://www.scirra.com/badges

Stands for "Read the fabulous manual" lol (manuals not up yet thou).

You guys also hear about the Diaspora founder (allegedly) killing himself?

http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/13/dia...es-away-at-21/

It's very sad news, he was only 21. I have a deep sympathy for him. I hope his friends + family are all ok. I also hope it had nothing to do with Diaspora itself (huge press, dreams of making it, then it failing)

The thing is, I am scraping a database. I search for a certain thing and the scraper/parser should identify key items, I am not sure, if downloading every file on the site is going to be helpful.

Would it be inappropriate to open a thread for my problem? Probably not everyone reads the LC thread.

This forum seems slow

Not really programming related... but what are the advantages of using linux as opposed to the 2 big operating systems? I tried to get into linux when I was much younger but didn't have the patience to learn and it put me on major tilt when it took an hour to install a program.

This is kinda user specific... a lot of people us it for different reasons.

For me, the 2 big ones are

- Its free
- Its open source (tho open source usually implies free)

In reality, most people who use linux are developers and they use it because the tools the need (or the environment they use) require a linux os.

Add to that it also used to be much more stable than Windows and you didn't risk losing all your work to a BSOD like you did in Win 3.1/95/98 (I basically did all my work under Linux [until XP proved it was alot more stable than the older Windows versions] for this very reason).

Read an lwn.net article indicating that Linux Mint seems to be taking a lot of market share from Ubuntu at the moment.

Apparently those guys are taking Gnome 3 and writing a shell to make it behave a lot like Gnome 2 as part of the transition. I'm just about done with Unity now so i'll be giving both Kubuntu and Mint a go in the next few months.

My favourite part of linux (besides MrWoosters examples) as both user and developer is the packaging and update system.

Having centralised software libraries available via a single command, that also does dependency resolution is a massive time saver. In addition, all your software is updated using the same mechanism. Consider how many individual websites/download sites and individual software installations you would need to do to update every piece of software on your Windows box to the latest version. On most linux installations this is a 1 liner.

When I first learned to program in C in school it was all done on a linux machine. So since then I've done practically all C/C++ devlopment on linux just out of habit. Also all the tools that I need to use are easy to find and install and update just as Sorrow said. gcc of course installed by default

Used Ubuntu up until they destryed it with Unity. And I cant stand gnome 3 either so I switched to Kubuntu now. It seems ok, but needed some tweeking in the beginning.

Any Stack Overflow users? Some folks started a proposal for a Poker QA site (I just supported their proposal via the site, have no affiliation). Link is here if anyone feels like throwing their support in:
