It could be a placeholder for a method that will eventually do some validation, or leftover from a previous version that used to. I don't think it's a definite giveaway that the guy doesn't know what he is doing, but it's a warning sign, at least if this is meant to be the finished product.

Our dev configured the wrong server because he assumed the dns name was right even though it had nothing to do with this pilot and didn't match the IP address I gave him. And it's someone else's fault of course... Yippeee!

What do you guys think about linked in? Do you guys use it for anything?

My boss just asked me to create a profile since we're a super small company and it might be useful for investment. It's never really seemed that useful to me before.

Never used it before, don't know much about it but would be grateful if you share your experience!

i've been called for quite a few interviews through my linked in profile. it's a lot more important for contractors, and keeping it current is sort of a hassle.

i guess i should elaborate a bit:

- everyone is on it, even my mom. critical mass is obv pretty important for a social network.

- it's a reasonable way to, well, network: find jobs, find talent, etc.

- vague acquaintances from long ago in your past come out of the woodwork to friendify you.

- some people (recruiters! scummy HR people! marketing droids!) just want to amass connections so they can look cool and also spam everyone.

Can someone explain to me what exactly google app engine is?

It seems like a web framework and hosting service in one?

In so far as it is a web framework, how come you don't hear much about it? It seems they have a python webapp framework (does this compete with django?) and also a java one (does this complete with other java frameworks?).

Coming from a backgroudn where you write an application in something like RoR, or cakePHP, or django, or whatever, and then find a host, it's not clear to me where Google app engine fits in that paradigm....

I need a flash drive to get a reasonable start time?

And not installing updates? What about security updates?

i've had my complaints about windows over the years, but win7 on ssd is pretty great so far.

win7 works fine once its up and running, but its annoying having to wait five minutes or so to use it after I start it. better than windows 95 and 98 though had to reinstall those every few months for the computer to even be usable.

What is it about the windows operating system that makes it such a slow starter compared to other OS?

Agreed. As a life long ms hater, it's a bit tough to admit, but they've brought out some pretty good stuff in the past few years. Win7, Visual Studio 2010 and Security Essentials are all very good.

If you're careful about what you install and keep a reasonably clean and secure system you shouldn't experience any slowdown. I've been running on the same install of win7 since it first came out and still boots up and runs as fast now as it was then. Try using ccleaner to clean up your registry and temp/cache files. Might need to defrag your HD too. Does win7 do this automatically now like OS X? Last time I checked I was still at like 7% which seems odd.

From what I can tell, Google app is in the same category as Heroku in that it's a hosted web app service for developers who don't want to worry about sys admin. I've heard a few horror stories though, and it's a bit too inflexible for my tastes. I certainly wouldn't want to have to get a hold of someone at Google if something goes wrong.

How does one go about getting a website as a product going?

Say I want to have a multi-variable searchable database with user supplied results/additions. Is there code for this out there that I just buy/rent, or do I have to hire someone?

It seems like so many people have websites and the like and I can't imagine all of them knowing how to program!

What it do?

user supplied results makes things tricky, otherwise wordpress / drupal is a good place to start looking?

Same thing anyone does when they need anything built, such as a house or a website, when they lack the knowledge of how to do so.

Hire a professional.

Does VS2010 do anything new that's cool? We have it available at work but I've been putting it off because getting my plugins working after upgrading from 05 to 08 was a pain.
