First computer was the commodore 64 and hooked up to a B&W tv iirc. I also don't remember for sure if our first family PC had a green or amber monitor, but I think it was amber. 35 years ago, sonny.

Same here except color TV. I also had a BBS and stolen codes to dial long distance for free. I would stay up until 4am when the other BBSs came free and download or trade pirated video games. I napped in class and after school. My grades reflected it big time.

The worst was when I tried to load something on my 5 1/4" floppy drive that didn't exist, it would bang like crazy and wake my Mom up - who would yell at me to go to bed.

For one 6 month period or so I probably had the most pirated C64 video games in KC - when local vs. long distance mattered a lot.

There was one BBS in KC that was for swingers. I got in this torrid chat sex with the female (hoping) SysOp, then told her I was 14. She freaked out a little and hung up.

Mine too. I think probably my first was green and then I picked up an amber one. Believe it or not it was considered a pretty big deal when I was in college to get an extra display card and have 2 of these bad boys going at once, so you could, get this, run the debugger in one monitor and view the output on the other. At the *same time*

Even when I got a pentium with a VGA display, still to have a 2nd monitor you needed a hercules graphics card to support a 2nd monitor, and that 2nd one was text only. 80x24 characters.

Prior to that, the screen would switch back and forth.

My first was a vic-20 that was hooked to a small color tv
Second was an apple IIc that came with a green and black monitor.

Wow there’s a lot of gold in that ad.

Look at that Recreational Program Pack A, with such memorable titles as Car Chase, Blue Meanies from Outer Space, SPACEMATH, and Biorhythm/compatibility!

Freaking BASIC turned me off being a computer programmer for 10 years. But I'd probably be beyond burnt out right now, so maybe it worked out.

Mine was a Magnavox 386 with an 80 meg hard drive an CDRom! I remember buying 3.5 disks in bulk for backups...

Mine was a BBC micro, which had a colour monitor. I saw amber and green PCs in school at a later date. First real PC was a 386SX/25, First that I actually owned myself was I think an AMD K6-2/450, with an Nvidia TNT2, absolutely sick machine! I've still got almost all these vintage machines and many others stashed away somewhere, for what is probably no good reason.

If it's time for nerd ****, I just ordered this mechanical keyboard for the office:

Look at that ****ing sex appeal right there. Once your fingers touch a PBT keycap, you'll never want to go back.

I use a mechanical keyboard at home (brown cherry switches) but I feel like even that is probably a bit too loud for work. I use reds for gaming.

Pop that insert key off - the first thing I do every time. Although I guess now I have the technology to remap it.

I use a mechanical keyboard with reds, some clone manufacturer tho. Love them. For most coding (linux box) I actually use a 10-key less F-key less one, super comfy on lap. I have another but full sized one for using Excel and other such tasks (win box)

Don't think I've ever hit INS by accident, but then again it is useless anyhow. One of my old Microsoft keyboards had tucked away INS on some Fn combination and instead had a double height DEL, that was nice.

Blues are as clicky as the original PC keyboard I had - might even be modelled or resurrected from it. I work in an open plan office. I actually find them maybe even a little too loud for myself to use, I wouldn't use them at home.

I am a loud typer though, in general. I used to work somewhere and someone who was waaaay across the office from me would send me an IM and say she could always tell when I was responding, because she could hear me typing.

I'm a philistine, I use a mechanical keyboard for gaming because it offers better performance. But for general usage a Microsoft natural or MacBook keyboard is perfection

I personally find mechanical keyboards virtually no different to use to standard keyboards. My typing speed isn't as fast as some of you though, maybe you need to be at a certain speed before it matters.

I've never heard of this "mechanical keyboard" thing and don't even know if I have one. I think the Microsoft Natural keyboard at my desktop is, and my laptop isn't. I don't really like that desktop keyboard being so loud, but I do like the shape.

The Microsoft Natural is a standard membrane-type keyboard. You won't buy a mechanical keyboard by accident, they are expensive. Membrane key presses work by pressing down on a membrane underneath the keys and thereby actuating an electrical connection. Mechanical keyboards have an individual switch on each key. The advantage of mechanical is supposed to be that there's more tactile feedback on when the key has been successfully pressed, which allows for faster, more accurate typing. They're also more durable.
