Yeah that's how it works. Some company trains a junior dev on the job and gets marginal productivity out of them, then the dev leaves because the company will never double their salary to what they're worth.

OK here's a unique use case: Some dickhead has been taking my game's open source code, replacing my name everywhere and saying he made it, and running his own server. It sees some play I guess IDK.

I didn't care much until one of my mod's screenshotted something about how he's going take my upcoming release or something, it just irritated me. What's the best way to **** with him? He knows very little code just how to find and replace things and how to use uh localtunnel or something to host the app. My first thought is some new code I commit that I run through an obfuscator that checks to see if an environment variable is there and if not, run a function, at the very least drop his mongo tables. I bet I could do some nasty stuff with node fs too as the app requirse sudo. Rimraf all his ****? Thoughts?

Maybe just his name so other people can still run it?

If it is open source, he's probably doing nothing wrong. What license? Why is it open source if you don't want people self hosting, modifying, redistributing?

Can't you have the app check some kind of public authorization API, and if the right keys aren't there it won't run? Embed that **** all over the place so it's really hard to take out.

Then if he comes groveling to you propose some kind of co-branding thing.

I hate this working to make things work across browsers. I give up on fixing the scrollbar bounce. You can do something that's ok with ::webkit-scrollbar, but that doesn't work at all on Firefox. Scrollbars are ugly anyway and buttons can do what I want and can be customized.

It's open source because I like people contributing to it and it's a huge career boon/something I can show off. Doesn't mean I want people hosting their own instance. Also doesn't mean they can't of course.

I'm probably going to do that suzzer. Doubt he can track down all the changes especially if I do it in one big commit.

You will never know the joy of making things work in the Android native browser - across a myriad of devices including HTC, Motorola, Nexus(google) and Samsung - all with their own weird quirks - circa early 2010s.

Lol - I see that all your connections may not be secure.

I love the "Let's scam our own customers as hard as we possibly can" business model. Sure just sneak in some ridiculous unrelated service (Frontier Secure) that no one would ever need or want.

Bonus points for trying to confuse the issue about how much my bill would go down by using pre-tax amounts. Also mixing in frontier secure with other stuff I have and using all lower case to try to just slip it right on by.

Every time I do online chat for cable/internet services I think to myself "Okay just remember this is some random employee over the internet, dont get mad" and by the end I am typing swear words in all caps without fail

In my experience in the bay area and the other tech hubs I've looked for work, salaries are far more compressed than this. You might start approaching 2x differences when comparing devs 3+ levels apart

My company is offering relocation to Austin with no change in pay. Currently in the Santa Barbara area.

Afaict housing rental looks to be more than 20% cheaper and purchase might be even more than that.

Between that and no state income tax this seems like a no brainier, right?

I don't really know Austin and I'm sure it's great, but it'd take a lot more than 20% cheaper housing to get me to go Santa Barbara -> Texas. But then, I think it is really a lot more than 20% cheaper.

Yeah 20% was pretty conservative. Another big factor is that the job market is much larger which is helpful for my wife now and me whenever I leave my current company

And we're actually in Ventura but I figured they wouldn't mean much to most folks in the thread, esp Rusty who I think lives in Austin. It's a bit cheaper than Santa Barbara but a lot less nice when it comes to stuff like restaurants

If you want to live in the South seems like an easy way to get a raise.

Seems like a no brainer

Spoiler:
to STAY IN SANTA BARBARA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING

Actually given Ventura followup, that makes it closer, but I had coworkers at my last company who said Austin was a miserable place to be during the summer. California weather is GOAT, what price do you put on that?

Ventura is fine. My brother lived there for years. SB is nice, but ridiculously expensive - including those nice restaurants.

I've seen multiple people go from $60ish as their first dev job to over $100 as their second.

Low end of "senior" vs high end of "staff" at well-paying Bay Area companies can definitely be 2x. See: https://levels.fyi

Facebook as an example - lots of E4s in the low 200s, most E5s in the high 300s but some at mid 400s.

At normal-paying companies (like my last job), I think what you said is definitely true, salary disparities are more like 150k vs. 200k.

Not really related but on the same subject, saw this in Hacker Newsletter today, seemed pretty accurate relative to my recent job hunting experience: How I negotiated a $300,000 job offer in Silicon Valley

Cliffs: get multiple offers from big names and play them off each other, acquire $$

If you want to feel old, me and another coworker were telling a young'in today (also coworker, early 20s, new grad) about dial-up modems. Like how they used phone lines, and there were these things called "BBSes" that were like small networks you dialed up via their phone number before home internet access was really a thing, and how you'd kill for a 250ms ping in whatever online game you were playing. He was like "I've never heard any of this before"
