fwiw, on an acer aspire one the middle of the webpage is like 75% to the right of my monitor (which is tiny).

I did the logo myself using pixelmator for mac. Still not 100% happy with it, but I needed something to launch the site.

Well, its not 100% original... i basically did a google image search for poker logos to come up with some examples. Nothing is copied, but I did take ideas from a few different logos.

Thanks. Toying with several ideas of how to promote the site a bit. Setting up all the social media outlets, but also going to try to reach out to some poker coaches individually to see if they would be interested in using it for session reviews.

For monetisation options have you thought about limiting it to say 100 hands for free, and more will cost $x a month?

You can then sell it to poker coaches as a tool to help them provide better coaching services.

you lot seem like you know a lot about computers :P so would like some advice, i got up to about 900£ to spend on a laptop (dont really want to go for a mac), loads just seem the same and i dont know whats actually different in them. 15-17" aswell.

Ye, there are a few ways of doing it I think, but no idea which ones will be the most successful:

• Limited service for free, premium membership for unlimited hands - Will only work if I get some coaches using the service, but potentially could be quite successful.
• Additional premium features for paid users - Similar to the above, but rather than unlimited hands, enable additional features. Not sure I really want to go down that route tho, I would like every user to have free access to all features.
• Advertising on the site - This will almost certainly come at some point, but I dont want it to be disruptive. Thinking along the lines of asking poker coaches if they would like to advertise.
• A 'reddit gold' type of membership - Basically just gives the user a special status. I like the idea, but dont think it will be very profitable
• Sponsorship by a bigger site - Get a bigger site (e.g. deuces cracked) to sponsor the site. Would be profitable, but the site would really need to get going to make it interesting to some of the bigger sites, and by that time, one of the above options might be more profitable.

Going to really concentrate on getting the site off the ground at the moment, but monetisation is obviously important and also something that I have zero experience with.

ASUS UX31, Samsung 700Z Chronos would be high up on my shopping list I think. neither is a 17" though.

A LOT depends on your priorities. maybe a sick full HD screen is important and you rarely type so keyboard is inconsequential, maybe you play games and always run on mains power so battery life doesn't matter. or the exact opposites!

Thanks for the tip, but not sure this would really work as the whole site is based around users sharing sessions. Without the ability to share sessions, the site doesnt really deliver much and I am not sure many users would pay to allow other users to see their sessions.

Just a word of caution which I think is very likely not required anyhow! Please don't go overboard with monetization, If for example it one day changes to be covered in adverts for free $5000 signup bonus at scamcasinoblackjackspam.com, some poor mod (me! pkrsess is now posted in all 3 forums I mod at) will perhaps have to clean up all the links or more likely one of the blues will notice and add it to the spam censor, obv none of us want that.

just curious, what are the rules for stuff like that? in the above example, you had a a legit site that allows advertising from a spam/sketch site being disallowed from promoting itself. are there some comprensive set of rules that govern what is and isn't allowed on 2p2? specifically in the software forum?

no solid rules, though there's clearly fine free things and clearly fine commercial operations that are easily pigeon-holed into their respective forums. Mostly just try and evaluate/discuss things as they come up. The line I guess for a "Free Software" thread is I think a non-intrusive donate is fine, a "donate to unlock pro features" is def commercial. We haven't had to deal with a lot of ad-supported sites, thankfully. Poker web apps seem to go for direct monetization subscription type model. I'd think anything ad supported would have to go in Commercial forum, which means it'd have it's links removed unless they paid the monthly rent. It's usually a a matter of asking Bobo Fett for the tough decisions

Ye, I realise that this could be a potential issue. I have no intention of turning the site into an advertising billboard although at some point I will need to introduce some sort of monetization model. Bearing this in mind, I will make sure that I contact yourself or another mod beforehand so that there are no issues. This probably wont happen for a while tho.

Edit: Also, I have posted it here, in HUSNG where I used to hang out a lot and in the software forum. I hope thats not considered pushing the boundaries too much, my intention is to only post about it in the software thread now that its been made public.

@MrWooster dig what you're doing with Pkrsess. The challenge with any venture is figuring out when you have enough of an application to get it out the door, and I think you made the right choice launching when you did.

I would echo the sentiment of being careful how you monetize - especially give how clean and straightforward everything looks now. Tacky ads would really harm the experience. I think your marketing ideas are good though.

Signing in with twitter is a good option for this. It really says 'Get started now'.

Maybe you mentioned this earlier, but what hand converter are you using for this? It looks like the Deuces Cracked but you also seem to have the ability to filter on streets so maybe it's something more custom. Also curious to know what api/code are you using for comments. I'm not sure how I feel about if putting the comment box on the right. Maybe i'd like it better if you just had 2 buttons or popouts to the right of the hand that say 'add note', 'add comment' but then displayed the comments and notes on the side.

The hand converter uses the Deuces Cracked API, but with a lot of post processing to break hands down and extract all the details. Its not the prettiest code I have written

Re comments, not 100% following what you mean... are you saying have comment/note buttons and have a popout with a form to add the comment? The comments/notes are all custom built and the reason they are quite visible is to try to encourage people to use them. If there was just a button then I am not sure people would really use the feature that much. I definitely need to tidy it up a bit though, and I want to expand the comment/notes system a lot in the future.
