It also becomes much easier with 2+ offers because companies will be way more willing to outbid if you might go to a competitor. So def wait for all offers to come in before committing. Make sure to post here or on blind to make sure you're not getting lowballed, but FAANG will usually give a good initial offer based on level. Level is hard to negotiate, stock and sign-on is the easiest to negotiate up, base salary you have a little bit of wiggle room (usually 10-15%).

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

god dammit that gives me flashbacks to a couple companies ago.
We did oil and gas data, and had about 100 customers that paid us $100 a month. The average customer would spend 15 minutes a day on our site.

Every ****ing board meeting the VC's would ask some question about scaling or why we aren't on aws. Every month I'd have to answer our current setup can handle 10,000 concurrent users just fine so we'll add a server to the database cluster when we have about 10,000 customers and for every 5,000 customers after that and we'll be fine. We're not moving to AWS because it will be slower and cost us $20,000 a month more than our rack of servers. Go find a ****ing sales person who can sell 10,000 seats and I'll worry about the scaling.

They hired a total dip**** of a ceo and the company ended up selling for peanuts and they basically lost their entire investment so jokes on them.

I think the election crashed the AWS console. Can anyone else access it right now? None of the static content is loading for me.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "AWS console" but I can log into AWS and look around, cloudwatch, ecs etc

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Should I complete my second B.S.(online) in Comp Sci: Yay or Nay?

Background:

1. I have 8 courses(4 semesters) left.
2. I have a B.S. Physics.
3. I'm planning to apply to the Online MSCS @ GA Tech with or without the B.S.
4. I will have taken Analysis of Algorithms & Operating Systems before starting the M.S.
5. I have been an online poker pro for ~15 years and I am still playing full time.
6. I have no idea when it will make sense for me to get a real (dev) job.

What do I gain by obtaining a B.S. before the M.S.? I've taken multiple courses each semester thus far and it's cut into my focus and time for poker. If I switch to the M.S., I can take one course per semester and still finish in ~3 years. I'm also completely unmotivated to take some of the required courses for the B.S.(CS Ethics, Software Engineering, Spanish III).

BS in Physics represent! Did you have any girls in your class or the adjacent ones? We had zero.

Mike: So how long do I wait to call?
Trent: A day.
Mike: Tomorrow.
Sue: Tomorrow, then a day.
Trent: Yeah.
Mike: So two days?
Trent: Yeah, I guess you could call it that, two days.
Sue: Definitely, two days is like industry standard.
Trent: You know I used to wait two days to call anybody, but now it's like everyone in town waits two days. So I think three days is kind of money. What do you think?
Sue: Yeah, but two's enough not to look anxious.
Trent: But I think three days is kind of money. You know because you...
Mike: Yeah, but you know what, maybe I'll wait 3 weeks. How's that? And tell her I was cleaning out my wallet and I just happened to run into her number.
Charles: Then ask her where you met her.
Mike: Yeah, I'll ask her where I met her. I don't remember. What does she look like? And then I'll asked if we ****ed. Is that... would that be... T, would that be the money?
Trent: You know what. Ha ha ha Mike, laugh all you want but if you call too soon you might scare off a nice baby who's ready to party.
Mike: Well how long are you guys gonna wait to call your babies?
Trent, Sue: Six days.

Define "real dev job" Jeff. What is it that you want to do?

What you need to get there could range from self study and putting some personal projects on Github to doing a 12 week bootcamp to completing a BS or MS.

Nobody cares much about your degrees. You'll need internships, work experience, or a portfolio to get the majority of jobs.

For the places that do care your masters will matter but your BS won't.

I'd highly recommend taking the software engineering course though

The time and money is spent learning to program real stuff. There are tons of open source projects for example, that are always accepting new volunteers. That's a much better way to spent time and improve and set yourself up for a good job later. If you don't care about working in the industry, then more school makes even less sense.

I have no work experience, no internships and no time for projects outside of my courses right now. I have several project ideas that I'd like to explore, but I spend all of my mental energy on poker and coursework right now.

Are software engineering courses actually worthwhile?

I'm trying to keep an open mind about what kind of dev job I can get because I have no idea what the dev job market is like. I enjoy mathematical modelling/simulation and systems programming in general.

I think so. I need experience working on larger projects and working on a team.

<3 Physics. We usually had 2-3 women in our upper level physics classes.

I care about working in the industry. I need an backup plan after poker dies(bots, solvers and legislation make this inevitable).

I believe that you're right that I should start working on open source projects. I think that it is unrealistic for me to do so while I grind and take two courses. I do want to get the M.S. though. I enjoy studying cs theory and math and I'm interested in the material covered in the M.S.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

If you think you can do real dev work you probably can. Though probably will have trouble getting interviews with no experience or portfolio. In your shoes I wouldn't bother with school and make a portfolio showing examples of what you can do and then apply for jobs. It worked for me. I wouldn't bother contributing to various other people's open source.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

First option is to have friends who can give you a job - I have a half-time thing now that's temp, but I think will be long term because of friends.

But, before I started that I found a few people who wanted something done, but couldn't pay. Maybe there would be an opportunity or a product later. What I'm saying is that "building a portfolio" doesn't just have to be doing fake things. You could get something real with a poor start-up or a non-profit and maybe be working with a team right off and maybe it turns into a job or makes a connection.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

lol today i had to do a fresh centOS install with a bunch of really specific configurations on one of our server machines, but i didn't have the right image because some dip**** misplaced the disk, I didn't have a mouse dongle because some dip**** lost it, so I had to follow an online tutorial I was only kind of sure was the right one to go step by step on how to install from a remote URL, using only keyboard to navigate the UI - for a huge, huge demo we are doing for intel that's due tomorrow. Our infra guy is out sick so it fell to me because I'm the only one not working on this already.

Yea totally didnt **** my pants or anything. took me way longer than it should have but whatever I did ended up working right.

It totally reminded me of a few times being out on the boat in the middle of the night and something breaks, and I have to call the mechanic about where **** is and how do I do this thing, etc., and he's trying to guide me through it but since he's not there he can't really do a great job, and no tool was ever where it was supposed to be so I had to go digging around in cabinets and stuff. That was totally what it was like talking to our infra guy, lol. Like 100% analogous.
