They have different heights though based on video, picture, amount of text.

3 seconds actually seems to work pretty well so far.

Nice, the incorrect position on page load can be quite irritating when there are a lot of tweets.

Man, I think I'm going to try and get an article published at the end of my job hunt. It seems like something that should be pretty simple and straightforward but it has been anything but.

In what kind of publication / what subject?

Craggoo,

What I would really like to see is an article about you rolling the dice and moving to a tech haven and getting a sweet job!

Question: how do you approach salary discussions with recruiters?

More specifically - thinking about looking elsewhere, and I'm pretty open as far as what kind of companies I could work for but I imagine in practice that only a smaller set of companies would actually satisfy my salary requirements.

Opening up communications with a lot of companies and wading through initial small talk and stuff before discussing salary would be a huge drag on time. Is it reasonable/productive to ask for a salary range from the outset?

Obviously this only applies to smaller companies, I know the giants could pay me what I wanted if I got hired there. Additional caveat: I have never dealt with recruiters before, both of my longer-term jobs I've had came about due to friends working there.

Well I found out this go round that recruiters are happy to tell you you can get whatever number you ask for. Then later reality might creep in. So don't assume just because they don't blink at your number that you'll get a bunch of realistic shots at it.

Then again you're in SF so none of that may apply.

Does that vary at all between in-house versus external recruiters?

IMO do not give recruiters your salary requirements, any more than you would the actual employer. I once gave a recruiter a ballpark. The company offered me a job (through him) and he responded (without contacting me) that I had verbally accepted, because the offer was around my ballpark. I actually suspect he told or hinted to them what I would have accepted. I had to re-negotiate after that and they were somewhat pissed about it, although when the dust settled they were pissed at him, for insisting on intercepting all communication between them and me, and assing up the deal.

I took some of your guys advice and said “im looking for a fair market salary” and they gave me exactly that.

Edit: that was in the offer stage though

IME internal recruiters will tell you when your expectations don't line up with their salary ranges.

External recruiters are a waste of air imo

First sentence is true.

I've now landed 3 jobs through external recruiters so I can't totally throw them out - annoying as they are.

They can be something of a necessary evil. There are a lot of companies in every city that you will never really hear about organically, and that do not do a good job of looking for candidates. In my most recent job search I sure interviewed at a lot of places that I'd either never heard of, or didn't know hired software devs.

Make sure to research glassdoor beforehand to make sure salary expectations aren't way off.

Yeah external recruiters are good for getting broader exposure. But they rarely have any real relationship with clients on either end of the transaction and will happily lie about anything and everything. So I wouldn't share with them and would try to avoid them entirely if possible

Sites like: https://h1bdata.info/ are also useful. Yes, they're incomplete (no bonus / equity information) but still useful for seeing ballpark numbers.

Good example, I'm still being harassed by external recruiters who know I have a job, even after I reply to them that I'm happy with it. So they'd happily push someone who would jump ship after a few weeks on the job to other clients. An internal recruiter would never do that.

Also they offer high salaries that I know will mysteriously disappear and turn into something else.

I like how he says "Quick yes/no" and then comments on how short and quick your response is. Idiot

I've kinda decided that I'm moving regardless in early 2019 with or without a new role wherever I end up.

I don't know if my company is particularly inaccurate, but my current salary at my current employer is well over what h1bdata/glassdoor show for engineering salaries.

For Netflix, as an example (they seem like a good barometer since they forgo stock for more base salary), Glassdoor says "senior software engineer" averages out to $206k. I'm not leaving my job and moving to the South Bay for that, but I also feel like that's probably significantly undercutting what a senior software engineer actually makes there (remember the $325k figure earlier ITT? I'd probably pack up for that much!).

Maybe part of the problem is that much like how college degrees became ubiquitous, now errybody is a "senior software engineer" and the term is meaningless.

Yeah the funny thing is that's the company I bombed the first codepad interview with after my trip. I've had at least 10 external recruiters aggressively try to sign me up for them. They don't even care if I tell them I already bombed the interview.

I even talked to them again right at the end. I thought I was just gonna talk to someone then the guy pulled out codepad and I was like "nahh, I already got a job". Felt good. Find another monkeyboy to dance for you.

Hey guys - if you're that desperate maybe try lightening up on the JS trivia and just hire some people on short contracts or something.

They're right by my house and I wouldn't switch to them for 20% more than I'm making now on my long commute. Sounds like a boring job anyway - an agency working on short prototype-ish projects for either seed startups or clients (not clear on that one).

That data is noisy, but still very useful. One part of that is definitely that "Senior Software Engineer" just isn't that useful as a title anymore. Another part of that is that there's been a big emphasis on the high salaries, that I think its skewed perceptions (remember all the not-so-high salaries from that tweet earlier).

https://h1bdata.info/index.php?em=NE...year=ALL+YEARS

You can see lots of 300k+ salaries at Netflix, but they all stop in 2015. So something happened at that point - maybe they moved to less salary and more bonuses/equity. Or they stopped applying for h1bs for high salary positions. Or you can pay people more than you have to apply for and so they've just started applying low and then pay people more than that when it makes sense.

I'm honestly not sure.

And, to this, I don't think the average senior software engineer makes more than 206k in cash (and even this seems a bit high).
