Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I got my latest job almost directly because people were blown away by my github/personal project so ymmv.

Though somewhat ironically I had the time to make my big side project because I had a bull**** job like Craggoo's for almost 2 years where I really only worked about 4 hours a day and then worked on my side project the rest of the time..

Paul Graham doesn't want to see young founders funded: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17893537

But I only posted comment seems pretty dumb:

Quote:
Your forgetting that the college kids of them only had to know basic php and JavaScript to build a server + front end web UI. Now it’s at minimum 2 years to learn the deep fundamentals of react/redux/graphql then tying it into lambdas on the backend , maybe another year of study to learn full kubernetes integration , then another year to fully grasp how to set up and side chain in a deep learning pipeline with proper selection of production grade ML framework. Learn them all then choose which one works best. After that to reach youth in mobile sector , take 1.5 years to fully learn iOS and android native platform builds . Etc etc . It’s not that college kids are too young . It’s that they need to take the recommended time to learn and deploy all the necessary tech to launch a successful startup!

Then 6 years later start over cause everything changed.

Why does everyone have to learn everything?

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Yeah and it's not like you're gonna learn that stuff in college anyway. You learn it on the job.

Also AWS' whole sales pitch is - "Get up and running quick with us so you can focus on what differentiates you from your competitors" not "Spend 2.5 years learning AWS, then start differentiating".

So much dumb.

so every start up is just going to have one tech guy and he has to do everything from servers to front end?

I read the article as PG was hoping young founders don't get funded for their sake, so they can enjoy being young.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Random question: Anyone know a good wifi router? It only needs to cover a 2 story ~2500 sq ft house. Currently using a pos router from Spectrum.

Or should I get wifi mesh (e.g. Google wifi)?

why is there so little talk about start ups and start up incubators in this thread and on 2+2 in general? that seems like a natural progression for this crowd post black friday etc.

It really is dependent on many factors, but a simple link extender might be sufficient, or you might need a mesh set up.

If you have the patience, a sweet spot app and lots of trial and error can help identify the best options. It can be counter intutitive at times, though. For example, I bought a small TP-Link extender to give me a better signal when I was outside on my deck. After much experimentation, it turned out it was most effective when plugged into a socket in the kitchen less than 8 inches from a 25 year old fridge/freezer.

Agree with suzzer here that this is exceptional.

Most of the time people put complete trash on github, and I don't ask them about it (which I'm sure contributes to the perception no one cares) because my only question is "Why do you think adding a github link to your resume is useful?" I'm sure it helps for places where people are just impressed you have an account...

In the rare cases where someone has something interesting there, they are invariably shocked if I ask a question of the project that shows that I made it past the name of the repo. So my sense is that it's not adding a ton of value to the rest of their job hunting.

(High-quality personal projects or working in a place where one can open source one's best work isn't something I expect, which is part of the reason why it gets less weight overall in a hiring process. If one has it, great, or are working on something for other reasons, enjoy -- but it's not an efficient way to bolster one's chances getting a job.)

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

In my current job I presented some of my projects in lieu of programming test or extensive whiteboard shenanigans. I finally got them to hire the guy I've wanted to hire for like a month now. My interest in him was largely based on his github. But let's be clear - his github was not tutorial-level stuff, it was good ****. There was a guy last year that I wanted to bring in for an interview, based on talking to him for 5 minutes and his github. But again - his github was a demo of taking an existing high throughput system and increasing it's throughput by another factor of 1000, which was basically his schtick (give me your data processing queue and I will make it orders of magnitude faster)

If you have professional grade stuff (by which I mean, things that are on-par with what you could do on the job), then yeah put it online and shop it around.

Oh I also once got a fun side contract job just based on a very short demo video I put on youtube.

Does anyone know any good community resources for AWS like the JS slack channel is for JS? I've joined the two AWS LA local meetups. But I haven't found anything else that seems useful.

I joined a start up, which was bought out soon after I joined. We are now up to around 60 people.

My equity stake is enough to appreciate having some skin in the game, but unlikely to become truly life changing.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Someone on here like Grue, it seems like he could leverage his game experience + an idea for a new game into $200k from an incubator if he really wanted to.

also, any advice for meeting non-technical co-founders? i just realized that my city has a startup incubator so i am going to get involved with that. but lots of these 5-10 employee companies, at least around here, aren't doing anything remotely complicated, they have just found a sweet spot to sell their SAAS. One company I interviewed at got the idea from his wife's friend who was like "We are still using pen and paper at our office to do x,y,z". They become profitable after 3 months of starting the company.

I met one of the founders of my company over a bridge game. He asked me if I knew any entrepreneurial life insurance actuaries, and I knew one...

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I thought about pursuing actuary for a bit when I worked in the mail room at Wausau Insurance. Then I learned you had to study like 1000 hours just for the first test out of 8 (or something like that). Nopeittyy nope.

I feel like if technology ever settles down, software engineering will become the same. Existing programmers will circle the wagons to put up a huge gnarly certification barrier to getting into the industry. The modern tech quiz job interview might be a first baby step in that direction.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Don't ever see that happening imo. The biggest barrier to hiring is just trying to figure out if the candidate can do what the job requires. I don't GAF beyond that what school they went to if any.

Uncle Bob I think was the one talking about this. He says he feels it's pretty much a matter of time till software causes a catostrohic cost of lives and the government has to regulate the industry so we should do it first
