Wow that's some devious passive aggression.

During the last couple of days I thought to myself how much faster would I be if I were using a GUI for git, and I honestly don't think there's any speedups (likely slow-downs). I have aliases down to a science, and anything more complicated is saved in my bash history, which accessible via arrow keys or CTRL+r. One thing that would be nice is if I could drag and drop a file into a list of previous commits, and have that automatically amend the commit, but I think I could write a script for that.

I don't think GUI users realize how rarely I touch the mouse and how fast you can be as a result. I also use vimium, a chrome/chromium extension, so I'm mouseless even when I'm googling. And as I've stated earlier, I use vim + i3 so I all my terminals/windows open via programmed hotkeys, tile automatically and are easily accessible via the keyboard.

I don't understand wtf is the goal of not letting people work remotely in 2018.

I have 25 vacation days per year. For any long vacations (1 week plus) I need to submit a plan for approval before the end of march. Most people take a month off sometime during June-August. But if I need to take a day or two off I just notify my team.

Sick days do not affect my vacation days at all. I get 24 sick days per year. People are encouraged to stay home when they are sick, even if it means a week+ of not showing up for work.

And if I need to run errands, get a haircut etc I just notify my team. We're expected to work 8 hours per day and the company trusts us to keep track of that ourselves. We can make up for lost time later in the week but in general if you're delivering quality work nobody worries about you missing a few hours here and there. We have a flex system, start of day is 8am-10am and end of day is 4pm-6pm. Most teams try to sync people up though, generally by having the standup at a certain time in the morning. Standup is 100% mandatory.

My personal opinion on remote work is that it is less valuable than being in the office. Face to face communication simply has more value than remote. Also, just being accessible for quick questions or discussion has a lot of value. Time zones are also an issue when working remotely.

Senior software dev. I'm not in the US though. I live in a Nordic country.

Btw, there is a strong culture here to not abuse the sick day policy. It is not like PTO where it is "yours". It is more of a societal right that past generations had to fight for, so you will get a ton of flack if you misuse it. I don't think many people ever use the full 24 days.

Murica is the outlier dude. 4 weeks so 20 days I guess is standard in Straya. If you stay with one employer for a long period, you are entitled to long service leave, which varies by state. In my state, you get a one-time 13 weeks after 10 years plus an additional 1.3 weeks per year thereafter.

Anybody up for giving some resume advice? I haven't been having much luck lately at the job hunt so I've tweaked it yet again.

what is the average commute to an office location in a downtown area? 45min? it is soul crushing to force people to do that 5 days a week.

you can just ask your questions on slack, etc.

I have had full time WFH jobs before. You have so much more free time. It's not just the 1.5 hours in the car, it's also lunch which usually takes me no more than 20 minutes.

In the summers I get to see my son during the day, all year I get to see my wife. It's little things, sitting in the morning drinking coffee in the same room. Me working on the couch while she browses the internet. It sometimes confuses her - she'll start a conversation and I'll be like, "I am deep in the guts of something, can't talk" and she's like "oh right, I forget you're actually working"

Even when I commute I tend to skew my schedule early or late so that I can miss traffic. It's 30-35 minutes at 9am vs 50 minutes at 7:30am

when I was interviewing, I disqualified any companies who treated remotes as first-class, like my last company did. don't want to work at another such company again. those guys are worth so much less to me as a teammate in terms of productivity, learning, and enjoyment of the work. they're almost not like teammates and more like vendors/customers where you need a clean API with a small surface area of interaction.

Murcan holiday allowances seem strange to me. I get 27 days' allowance, but I can buy 3 more.

The reason I ask is because we have zero policy whatsoever. There are people who work 5 days 10 hours and people who work an average of 4 days ~5 hours a day

You can guess which ones are more productive.

I tend to never take days off because I am so new

I hope their salaries reflect that.

At my company there is a big emphasis on work-life balance and most people here are around 30-45 and have kids so 40h weeks are the norm.

No I don’t think so.

The worst member of my team typically rolls in at 11 and leaves at 3 or 4.

Wow this post is a real gut punch. I'm looking for a new job. I currently WFH. I just had a baby. Man idk. My company refuses to raise or promote any first world, or at least American, employee. I can't deal with that forever, but man I really love my current setup. Ugh.

I've worked from home full time for the last 4.5 years or so. With improved video conferencing tools and slack I feel like it's gotten much, much better than it was when I worked at home occasionally a decade ago.

While I suspect your complaining makes this not the case - what if this person gets more/better work done in that time than the 10 hour a day people?

Then I probably wouldn’t notice - but this person is far and away the weakest member of the team.

From HN, this is kind of a cool article: using FOIA requests + Unix magic to find parking ticket hotspots and get them fixed

Dude found a place (via this data analysis) with confusing signs and wrote to city government to get them changed, saving drivers $60k in parking tickets

Arriving at 11am and leaving at 3pm while having terrible productivity and not being reprimanded is probably one of the most toxic things for culture there is.

That's not even the 10th of it.

I could go on but probably shouldn't talk about it too much. Once I get more established here I probably will start cracking down on the BS.

90% of people here don't abuse the free for all environment and eagerly get any work done that comes their way. But I have a few problem children for sure.
