Are you looking for more money or more work? You might try talking to job #1 and see if you can get more of either from them before looking for something else that just makes you a more difficult employee for employer #1 to deal with because you're remote.

Tell job #2, not job #1. As long it’s not a competing company, put both on the resume and say you worked off hours. Enjoy your gravy paycheck.

FWIW I only sought out job #2 after complaining about having nothing to do to my boss in job #1.

I also could have easily held down 3 jobs for the last 6 months - as the control freak lead dev on job #2 was freezing me out. Some weeks etween both jobs I maybe worked 15 hours - mostly meetings.

I sit next to what has become one of the most desirable meeting rooms, ironically because it's quiet and remote.

I sit next to the most desirable bathroom so me > you imo.

If this is true, I think you should abandon the idea of a second job (assuming it’s even remotely related and a job in tech).

I’m sure it’s possible to do what Suzzer did, and maybe even unlikely to ever have any problems. But I feel like a lot of companies would be pissed if someone they were paying full time got another job that clearly indicates they weren’t working the hours they were suppose to be working. And that doesn’t even cover any issues that might come up like if use their equipment, get reimbursed for things like internet/phone, work on a competing tech, have signed documents forbidding this, etc.

My team seems more comfortable with meetings now and actually have been requesting them more frequently.

We finished everything 1 week into a 2 week sprint so I gotta figure out what to pull from the backlog now. It’s friday though so i didnt wanna slam them with some new chore so i’m gonna wait til monday.

I was gone basically this entire week due to school and i come back and the place is in complete chaos. The founder/CTO whipped up some concoction of a new product over last weekend and reassigned EVERYONE to it. My boss ended up pulling my team off this project and had them writing docs all week - wtf.

They seemed very annoyed about it but I’m not sure how to approach the subject with my boss. It seems like an unusual situation that isnt likely to happen again but I’m not crazy about it. I know my project is really low on the list of priorities, and its just a test run, but cmon. I’m most annoyed that it annoyed my devs, they shouldnt be reassigned for a trivial task like that

You should find out how often it happens before making those assumptions. From what you've been describing it sounds like par for the course.

need some advice

So I just graduated with a BS in mathematics, I did the first 2 years as a CS major but then switched to math, but I want to get a job in programming. I think I probably could have got some junior dev job in Java before starting college, or at least my Java skills were on par with that level imo. I haven't really done much coding in the last couple years tho.

My plan is basically to take the summer off and get back into the swing of programming. I planned to go through all of the odin project cuz I want to learn how to do that stuff and it fits with a couple projects I want to do that involve a web site, but honestly I've never really been keen on that area so not sure I want a job in web dev. I have a few other projects I want do work on as well, and I figured id just create them in java since I know that language best.

I'm doing this because I figure having some kind of portfolio to show will help me, but mostly just cuz I want to take the summer off because **** it I can, and im excited to work on my own ****. I am pretty worried tho because I'm 40 and my resume is basically "poker pro" then "school". Is my current approach completely stupid, is there something else I should be doing, or a better way to approach getting a job in software given my situation? Any advice would be wonderful, thanks

How close does that BS get you to calling yourself a Data Scientist? Or is that not of interest? A Data Scientist who could code is probably the Block Chain of HR these days...

why did you switch to math?

I think Odin Project is mostly ruby (they used to teach a Rails stack) and maybe some Javascript + generic CS stuff (unless they changed it?)... Since you already have Java experience, maybe focus instead on Java Spring + learn a front end Javascript framework like React/Angular?

My company just hired a nearly 40 year old boot camp grad. I think you will be ok. You have CS experience. Probably just get a portfolio and start carpet bombing resumes/network.

kerowo,

Dont think I could get away with calling myself a data scientist, besides not having much interest the math direction I took didn't deal at all really with statistics and probabilities, which I imagine you need to know, so I couldn't even really fake it.

Glutten,

I took discrete math which was a CS req and loved it, knew pretty much everything that a CS degree entailed (I dont mean I knew the material, just what I would be doing and generally what it all was), figured I'd go the math route since I literally had no clue what that entailed so it left the possibility open that I'd end up going in a diff direction. Studied mostly cryptography related stuff, but sadly I have no desire to work for the NSA, so I didn't actually end up anywhere new, but still glad I did it.

yeah, odin looks like its mostly css/javascript. I hadn't heard of spring, I will look into that!

jmakin,

Again, I think you should relax a bit in general and not get offended at stuff, especially when it is the founder/CTO doing it. You don't want to seem like you are at odds with that person.

But yea, obviously it sounds like a clown fiesta, but many companies are, and nearly every startup is at one point or another.

Lol i’m not offended at all and i dont think anywhere in my post i conveyed that, and if i did, i didnt mean to

The problem is if it’s a regular occurence they may as well not even have me there. Pulling two devs off a project to work on mindless doc pages for two days isnt an issue to you?

Of course it's silly/terrible/stupid/etc

But think of yourself as more along for the ride and not steering, and no one likes a backseat driver.

A data scientist who can code is indeed a rare thing (and we pay well for them). Although I have a higher bar before considering someone a data scientist (more than just an undergrad).

not that it matters now, but why did you switch from CS to math when you wanted a programming job?

regardless, not really sure what you are asking. given your resume and history, I highly doubt that taking another single summer is going to have any effect. and if you want a programming job, well then you need to somehow prove to employers that you are capable, so completing side projects seems like the best way.

so really, I dont think there is any other way for you to go about finding a job than trying to impress with side stuff. I would imagine many ppl would recommend going to meetups and "networking". also, can your school help at all?

Internships might be an option as well. But it’s pretty late for looking now and taking the summer off isn’t going to help.

"having some kind of portfolio" will help you a lot less than practicing the questions that you are going to get in phone screens and whiteboards

Enjoying things, getting back into programming all great but remembering data structures, recursion, and being able to answer the usual stuff smoothly is going to make more of a difference in terms of getting a job (assuming that getting interviews is not also an obstacle).

Alobar,

I am the only actual CS major in my company's rank and file. We have a math major, a master's in EE, and a smattering of other engineering related things like that.

just learn to program, maybe a major framework, practice some interviewing questions, and your degree should be no problem

I spent a lot of time on ‘interview questions’ but since I don’t have a CS degree, it never really seemed to come up.
