Lol welcome to the startup life! No one is going to care how long you take breaks for as long as you produce.

Don't worry, I had a hard time adjusting too.

its certainly an adjustment to realize that you arent really "on the clock."

If it was just a sort of random Friday lazy lunch, then totally agree it’s not a big deal. But if every day involves 2 hour lunches I’d be a bit worried. I don’t think that’s typical in startups. But your mileage may vary.

From my experience - it's pretty standard in consultancies that all lunches last 1 hour - no matter how long they actually last. For client billing purposes of course.

One reason I don't like those situations where you have to bill every hour (or the dreaded internal time). Every layer of billing between the person wanting the work and the actual work is a potential for mis-aligned incentives.

I may be looking for work around early July if anyone needs a JS/node person. I don't want to do South America right now with my foot messed up, as I can't do any of the treks I wanted to. So I'm *probably* gonna turn around at Panama and do South America later.

I wonder if its more to do with a lack of precision in how we classify applicants and positions. Google is looking for Software Developers for implementing cutting edge research and Moe's Tavern is looking for Software Developers to build a one-off website to advertise happy hour. Guido is a Software Engineer and so is the latest bootstrap graduate.

Dude, you have a CS degree. Dump this PM crap and become a developer. The Bay Area salaries posted earlier should be enough motivation.

there's going to be a lot of room for me to develop i think, my day to day responsibilities arent going to be that hard, and i already saw an issue on git today I could've fixed but it was assigned to another dev so i didnt touch it

Do companies that have been acquired by the big players tend to adopt their parents' salary practices? I got contacted by an Oculus recruiter interested in my game development background, curious if I could expect them to pay like Facebook.

Mine did. Resulted in my bonus going from 22% or so to 13% or so - with some smoke and mirrors about "the big bonus" that no one gets. Nice pay cut. Another reason why I left. They gave us a one time boost to cushion the blow on the fall down.

Facebook launching a dating app is literally a perfect fit for them in every way. I can't believe they didn't do this sooner. No wonder match's stock instantly dropped 20%.

Can't imagine the nightmare it will be given how often they do something with their bread and butter that is annoying.

You mean you don't use FB's annoying snapchat clone? It's so fun and hip - all the cool kids are using it.

I haven't used FB in ~10 years now but it's undoubtedly going to crush.

It'll probably do well, but I don't actually see it a sure thing and I definitely don't think its going to become the #1 dating site.

I see it similar to LinkedIn vs Facebook. People want to keep work and personal life separate. People also want to keep sex life separate from the rest of their personal life.

Sounds like Facebook is going to try to accommodate that, but who knows how well they do it and how much users trust them.

The good thing about a FB dating app is its much much harder to fake a FB profile that goes back many years. You really have to be in it for the long con. Instagram should do a dating app for the same reason.

Hot woman: I'm really not ready to show you my whole profile yet, but can you show me yours so I know you're not a serial killer?

Guy wanting to get laid: Of course!

If they do it well I could see them becoming the main site for long term relationships. They’ll never capture the hook up / casual dating crowd though.

The whole idea of a site with your dating profile and your parents is kind of messed up. And they don’t have great trust right now in their ability to keep your data protected and segregated.

I'm pretty sure Tinder requires you to sign with your FB, so I'm not sure how much more security this is adding. Perceived security perhaps.

edit: If it's branded as "Facebook Dating", then that may shift the stigma of online dating, but if it's branded as another dating app, then I don't see how it would be significantly better than any other dating app.

i gotta have a pretty difficult convo with my boss by the end of this week about what his expectations are and what he wants out of me, and i'm gonna have to tell him somehow that i think communication is really bad. i'm gonna ask him what he thinks could be improved first and hopefully he brings that up because it's insanely bad

also gotta ask if it's ok to hold meetings with the team to get a sense of where they're at with this

You shouldn't be having difficult convos at this point and nothing is insanely bad.

You may be optimizing for the wrong thing.
