I'd be down for that.

For the record, there was a 2 year window of opportunity. I did meet a fellow 2+2er in Austin.

jj, of all the people here, you'd be someone I'd like to meet. One day, I'll see the Big Apple.

Hah. It’s the curling, isn’t it?

So for a curling tip: the Canadian Olympic trials start this weekend - it’ll likely be the best curling of the year.

Curling is awesome to watch. I have no idea wtf is going on though.

Can't be the best if Scotland aren't playing in it. The women already warmed up by winning the European title.

I will defend my comment in the Canadian sense by clarifying that I meant the average team talent of the Canadian Olympic trials will be higher than the average team talent of any other tournament this year (including the World Championship and the Olympics) even if the *best* team isn't present.

Spoiler:

I mostly use it while commuting; walking into work or taking the bus home. Occasionally at work. If you take one out whatever you’re playing stops so that’s what I do if I wear them to the coffee shop.

Yeah I guess we could have met at some point and there are maybe a few more 2+2ers in town, although not any programming forum regulars AFAIK. I tend to not suggest such things to people, because I feel like it would end up being an obligation.

So I guess for the record I am up for meeting anyone who comes through town. Tacos or BBQ or drinks or whatever. I don't kiss on a first date.

ETA: Also I am old so I usually just assume people won't want to hang out

Austin had a curling team. Not sure how considering the ice was horrible.

I know blacklab also lives in Austin. I think my talk at the Python meetup would have been a decent time to hang out since that's one of the few times I was getting to downtown and having a night off during that time.

The person I would meet once in a while was about 35 and worked with microchips.

All: Austin is an amazing city to visit.

In.

I live in England, so the logistics hurt my head. But I have also been drinking heavily.

I'll come to LV - but will be out of the country at least the next 6 months: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/9...-year-1664900/

Hey by any chance could one of you mods edit that OP and put a link to my blog up at the top? http://ushuaiaorbust.com/

I don't think any of the Travel mods post in here, maybe some lurk tho. You're prob better off using the post-report button or sending them a PM.

I see people posting these car/motorcycle trips often. Very cool. I have been reading these types of trips online for like the past 15 years. One question, why don't people just rent cars along the way? do these countries not have national car rentals? also, all those trip reports usually involve the vehicle breaking down and tons of auto related grief.

Not too many rentals let you cross borders. Renting a car in each country at each border, then returning it at the far border would be a big PITA. Breakdowns are part of the adventure I guess.

Got a really general coding question. This question may garner responses of "LOLCHRISV", not too sure, but here goes:

Lets say I have a list of thingies that I want to iterate over in a method. The method builds some return value while iterating over them, but also, if they don't meet some criterion, I want to remove them from the list.

I never know how to handle this sort of thing because it seems like I have a dilemma. I don't really want to mutate a method parameter in a non-obvious way, that seems like bad coding style that increases the difficulty of reasoning about the code. But I don't know how else to do both things without iterating over the list twice and that seems wasteful in performance terms. Is there any good general solution for this sort of thing? Maybe iterating over the list twice isn't a big deal?

You can always return a record of two items: (1) the return value you built by iterating over the list and (2) the pruned copy of the input list.

Personally I would prefer using two methods, one for pruning the list, and one for creating the return value. I choose clear code over performant code unless I know I truly need the performance, and usually I won't discover that until I've tried the clear code version first.

Yeah, I go with the clear version as well, I just always find it a bit annoying there isn't some way that is both efficient and clear.

If you create a filtered copy of your list (agreed that this is better than mutating the parameter), then creation of that filtered copy is likely to completely dominate the cost of iterating over it one more time. Saving that additional iteration is never going to improve performance in any meaningful way. Definitely go with the clear version here imo, filter first and calculate later.
