Because I have a kid who loves looking at pictures.

Edit: Pictures are also files that you generally can’t replace and often have a lot of sentimental value. Are you really surprised some people want safeguards in place here?

If you value those photos so much, why are you trusting it on a device that is going to die in a few years? It can fall off the table, or your cat can urinate on it, and your photos meet Lord Sparky.

I don't think it's up to a company to decide how I should use my device.

Philosophically, tossing out sentimental items is incredibly cleansing. Definitely try it out.

Lol. Um.... how do you think software (or like anything) works?

How dare 2+2 make me hit a button to submit a reply to a post!!!! That's outrageous and I should be able to use my device however I want!

We don't own 2+2? You own your Apple.

I guess it's okay to make photos hard to delete. It dissuades criminals and pedophiles from sullying the Apple brand.

You can't _own_ a cat.

Cats don't have sentimental value either, ergo, it's okay to delete a cat, but not a photo of a cat.

You're literally arguing against a trash bin right now.

And it has nothing to do with ownership of the device. Photos is an application like any other. They pick the functionality / features / behaviour they're going to offer and you have the choice of using it or not. I'm flabbergasted that this is even a discussion.

What? You save your photos in a file system, presumably, unless you are syncing with a cloud app. Either way, neither should be hard with deliberate actions.

Another annoying Mac feature is you can't selectively delete things from Trash - like you can with Windows recycle bin. The most fun is when you google this because you think you must be missing something and run into the Apple fanboys "WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT?!?one!?"

Literally the quote was something like "don't put things in the recycle bin unless you plan to delete them permanently." Um - so wtf is the point? Maybe I'd like to keep a bunch of small files around but delete the big one that's hogging all my disk space. Anyway - yes you can restore it then delete with command-delete. But still - no idea why you can't just right-click and delete permanently from trash.

And to be clear - I find Mac much more user friendly over all than windows. But stuff like this, and not being able to Ctrl-X to cut files, just rankles me. Drag drop from one nested folder structure to another is a PITA. And no I do not enjoy navigating all over my computer with terminal and grepping for files. There's a reason why GUI replaced DOS on the desktop.

Oh yeah and the goddam green button on the window. **** full screen mode, I want to expand to screen size. They change the magic combination to do that with each major release. It's like they make money off full screen mode somehow.

Hah, the all or nothing permanent delete is pretty dumb.

(Is that the photos trash bin? Because I can delete selective files from the osx trash bin)

Um... unless there's something going on here that I don't know about it, its delete the photo. Empty the trash bin.

Do you think that's too hard?

FWIW I am basically using the mac photos app to delete pics off my iPhone - another thing Apple makes very hard to do. I import once and leave on the phone, then export those as originals somewhere. Then I import again and delete on the phone this time. https://www.macworld.com/article/286...ur-iphone.html

Basically I wanted to selectively prune about 5000 photos over a decade down to about 1000. So no easy way to do it. But still this method was much easier than deleting one by one on the phone itself.

My only beef is that Apple makes it really easy to lose your selected pics. So you go along selecting about 4 out of every 5 pics to import and delete - holding down command and click. However - if you misclick and click between the pics (which is easy to do on a skinny portrait pic) then you lose all your selections and have to start all over again. Booo.

Idk if deleting from a trash bin is hard, ask suzzer.

Thinking of buying a mac, but holy **** there are so many horror stories.

My Trash Can seems to have a "Put Back" option on individual files (10.12.6).

I click on the trash can, get a finder window, right click on a file (or whatever you do to get a context menu if you don't have right click enabled, I have no idea :P)

Still much better than PC imo. Not having to freak out about viruses if I accidentally click a bad link is huge. Also terminal to run node is 10x better than dos.

Put back = put back in file system. Opposite of permanent delete. To permanently delete you have to use terminal (and find ~.Trash - which is annoying), or put back then command-delete (skips trash).

Also weirdness - Apple doesn't show it - but if you delete something on an external drive - it goes into the trash on that drive (which makes sense). So if you unplug the external drive, then empty trash, your external drive doesn't get emptied obviously and you don't get the space back. You have to empty the trash while the external drive is plugged in. Worse sometimes the external drive trash can get orphaned, and you have to delete it manually - or it just keeps sucking up disk space.

oh, my bad, I misread. Sorry.

edit: I also have a "delete immediately" in the same context menu that seems to do what you want.

Doesn't mac have an rm command? Why delete from the trash like that if you can go direct to devnull in one fell swoop?

Dave - we're talking about GUI. Everyone knows you can do whatever you want with terminal. Many of us don't live in Terminal.

You are not the target audience for the OS so you may as well expect some decisions to not go your way. The aren’t expecting their users to want that much control over the trash bin, the want you to just use the hard drive and as it gets closer to full they will start deleting stuff from trash. If you have a huge HD you may never see stuff leave trash. That ease of use means they don’t think of other ways to use the trash.

No ones come up with a better model for moving deeply nested files around than two Finder/Explorer windows open at the same time.

Full screen browser mode just pisses me off about how much screen space is wasted by modern web design. I have a 27” monitor, how about more then 8” of text please?

Even in Windows XP, I used no anti-virus. What are you all doing with your computers?

Linux deletes to a recycle bin as well. Using a GUI, you can select multiple by highlighting and pressing the shift key. Does mac have a similar feature? This would stop the misclicks.

Right - but on a laptop it's perfect.

I actually have total finder - so I can do a split screen finder. I just don't always want to set it up when I know I want to grab a couple files from somewhere. I'd like to just click Ctrl-X, wander around to find where I want to put them, then click Ctrl-V. Apple actually gave this ability in one release. Then they took it away

Also apparently in some newer releases you can selectively delete from the trash? I'm still on Yosemite at work.
