Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Well now I actually have something to do at work.

I need to make my open source node framework handle not just parallel API calls, but any mixture of parallel and sequential, with business logic and potential conditional calls (calls only happen if outcome of previous call turns out a certain way). Then incorporate it into some kind of demo I can show early next week as a potential solution for an API orchestration layer.

And of course I've become so ****ing lazy I haven't done **** for 2 days but post on 2p2, twitter, chiefsplanet, FB, look at the same porn as Ted Cruz, and watch sprots. Pray for Mojo.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

2 days when I actually had the job. Yeah it took months of doing nothing to get to this level of laziness.

And to be fair I'm not being totally lazy in other areas of my life. I'm going to my workouts and climbing Mt. Baldy every weekend. Just coding. I always struggle so hard to start the motor up again.

Normally if it personal and doesn't have any conflict of interest to your current job shouldn't be a problem. while a open source, it wouldn't necessarily mean you couldn't sell it or make money out of it. (don't know if you have explained it all earlier)

I always would get these by email. Managers change etc .At least if you have not been notified otherwise you are in a better position.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

90 hours a week is 13 hours for 7 days.

I would LOVE to see what someone's production looks like for the final 50 hours of that. If this is even real, it has to be a slope straight down.

Probably not even a slope, just absolute minimum productivity (but instant throwaway responses on slack!!).

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I did 90 hours once or twice. It was pretty hellish and yeah productivity was ****. But we had a deadline.

But to claim it's routine? I doubt they're even telling the truth. Just trying to scare off 9-5ers.

Ok for the love of god. If any of you sees me posting in politics (minus the posts I just made) - I'll ship you $100 to the first one who calls it out. I may need this thread though.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I did 70-80 hour weeks for a few months. It totally sucked and don't think I could do it again without a really good motivation. And I at least liked everyone I was working with.

I don't have a problem with the honest job posting. I just think anyone that takes it is being dumb.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Yeah I did 70 for a few months when I first started programming by choice and a few isolated times after to meet deadlines. That **** gets old fast.

It was doable for those first few months because I was new and excited with so much to learn. But that was like a perfect storm of motivation and wanting to dodge traffic for a hellish commute.

These days I can feel a sharp drop-off in my ability after even 8 hours.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I normally work 50-60 hours a week. 70, sure, but I'm gonna need to catch up on some rest and relaxation and sleep I've been definitely putting off.

But 90 hours and I'm def a zombie until the next time I can get 12 hours sleep and then take it really easy for a day.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

Jesus. 50 hours a week I can sort of get. That's like 10x5 or 9x5 + 5 home stuff. 60 seems ridiculous to me, do you not have any life at all? 70 is abuse and something is wrong. I work 40 hours a week and never think about work when I leave the office.

A lot of my friends just work like 8 to 6 or 7 or something and think it's standard. Maybe it is, but that's a big problem imo. Living in a developed country (USA, but maybe applies elsewhere too), life is supposed to be easier, and you don't need to brute force hours to get ahead in your career.

EDIT: I'm also NOT coming at this from a software dev perspective - dunno if that changes things. I'm an engineer at a research lab, and my friends that I'm anecdotally thinking of have jobs in sales and finance.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

For me it was usually 12-14 hours weekdays and 8-10 hours Saturday.

Mornings and afternoons were mostly meetings / putting out fires / making sure other people could get **** done and then coding in the evening with fewer distractions.

The thing that bothered me the most was that I never had any time to "do nothing". Sleep + Errands + Socializing sort of killed all the rest of my time.

I think my record for chargeable hours in a week is 110. I don't recommend it - I was a wreck at the end as a result of it.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

man, things were going great for like 2 weeks. I was getting important cards and learning a ton. the 2 weeks after has been just odds and ends. dinky cards and bug fixes.

its frustrating to watch other devs add important features to the components that I already built while I am fixing bugs (bugs that other devs created or left in system).

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

ya but if I mess up and create a bug or dont properly implement a feature, then I own it and fix my bug.

But now I am stuck with defects that have been sitting here for nearly 2 months. and I know which devs are to blame. why were they not held accountable? why am I tasked with fixing things that they messed up and also that they have more knowledge about and would be better equipped to handle?

and even more frustrating is that they get to build on features that I already created while I fix their mistakes.

I am still so new to this and I am very interested in learning as much as possible. sure, debugging and error solving is important, but I feel that there is a limited amount of time that Angular and Typescript and Redux is new to our company and I would like to separate myself from the rest. I thought that I had done well to quickly pick up on the Angular/Redux and was anxious to build upon it.

Instead I get the crap busy work. 2 weeks of it was whatever. but now that they dumped another 2 weeks on me, I am upset.

I will need to do something that I hate doing which is arranging to meet with the authorities on my team and advocating for myself or at least explaining my recent frustration.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

The little **** needs to get done too. Lots of that stuff ends up being more challenging than greenfield feature adds.

I don't know how things go at your company, but at mine, handling stuff like that rotates. Sometimes it sticks with someone for a while but it's not intentional. When it hits someone on my team two sprints in a row I speak up to make sure it doesn't happen a third time if it's at all avoidable.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

You're new. Everything you do will be good experience. Sitting on your hands is literally the only thing you won't gain some value from. Seeing how other devs **** up is really valuable. Just try to look at it like that.

But yeah, also let them know you want your share of interesting stuff to work on. Sometimes it takes time at a new company. It's actually pretty lucky if you get thrown into the deep end right away.

(this is suzzer btw on my gimmick's gimmick because I have no self-control)

Interesting post, how do you think the software development process where you work could be improved? My take is that you don't feel devs are being held to account sufficiently for their defects. FWIW, there are a lot of devs that have a "throw it over the wall" type approach if left to their own devices. Does your company do unit testing? What kind of testing would yield better results I.E. fewer defects shipped in the product? Does your company use a bug tracking system? Do people get involved in "triaging" bugs? Does your company do formal code reviews? The idea is to have a development process improve to uncover defects earier in an organized way that devs understand and are required to adhere to.

I get why you would be frustrated. Try to be positive and constructive in voicing your concerns and by all means voice them FWIW.
