Heh yeah our front end mentioned to me the other day that he had just updated to angular 4 and I was like... wow, how behind am I, I thought Angular 2 was the new hotness.

I don't know about hotness but I absolutely love QT for any type of fat client.

I worked with WPF quite a bit and found it infuriating. 100x worse was trying to do XAML with Xamarin forms. Literally nothing works like I expected and googling common problems always leads to solutions that involve restarting your computer and deleting weird files.

I tried qt with c++ and got very frustrated with cross platform building, esp because they want you to use their qmake tool, which I never really got dialed in for osx. Qt seems ok for python except for requiring you to install the library yourself

update:

did indeed get both offers, but apparently the word on the street was wrong, one was not time limited in any way afaict

both offers were pretty close in terms of compensation and they came on the same day, so i haven't had to sign anything to accept either.

appreciate the responses! hope i make the right decision :nervous:

Yep.

I think a key thing to remember in salary negotiations is: it's not the negotiator's money. He would bargain harder, probably, if he had to actually pay you out of his pocket. He is motivated to spend less if he can but he'll give up more.

Also, I think sometimes people assume the other party will get offended. Sometimes they act like it, hell, they might even FEEL offended. But you're usually negotiating with business people and most of them expect negotiation for everything.

If you're changing jobs make sure to factor in EVERYTHING like benefits and costs. My most recent job cost me about $5k/year more in health benefits because UnderArmour paid 75% of the cost. You are god damn right I insisted they up their offer to compensate for that.

I'm reaching my 1 year anniversary. I have a presentation prepared outlining what I've done in that year, and a lot of it is really good. Unfortunately, I have a brand new boss, and I think he does not value some of the improvements I've made. We'll see how that goes.

not interested in playing them off each other, though I don't think you were suggesting that. The company i wanted to work for more than the other came in with a lower offer which I immediately countered. We found a happy medium that nets me a higher hourly rate and gets me into a position and work situation i'd vastly prefer, so I think that's that for me.

You should negotiate with the other company now just for practice and see how far you can get.

This is the key thing for me. I always have it in my head Ill offend my potential soon to be coworkers. But then I talk to my best friend, who has negotiated hard, and shoots very very high on salary demands. Hes walked away with 10%+ more on every single job hes gotten an offer for. Always makes me realize Ive left thousands on the table being afraid.

Plus like Barrin mentioned earlier, its easier to ask for more up front than to make up that ground with a raise further down the line.

All that said, congrats Noodle. Its a hell of a good feeling to get set up to be at a place youre excited about

Not only that, but the other person on the other line will judge you for not asking for more. It's ****ed up, but that's how humans think. Which is also why women commonly get paid less, because they aren't willingly to broach the subject.

What do you guys talk about on your 1-1 with your manager?

I usually just reflect on what I have been doing, things that I wish I knew, what could have been done better. Then my manager gives me his viewpoint and gives feedback as to how I am doing. Is there anything else I should be bringing up? Or is this how all 1-1s are?

On another note, he said I'm killing it as a new guy, so I don't have to be worried about being fired any time soon.

you may never need to write another for-loop if you use linq. it makes filtering and grabbing data from lists/arrays intuitive and readable and often eliminates the need to create temporary variables.

I have two perspectives on this. I've got a once every two weeks with my manager where we touch in everything that you mentioned. We probably spend the bulk of our time talking upcoming projects and who to assign to them and hiring plans.

As a technical lead, I conduct once a month 1:1s with my team where we talk about projects that they've worked on or will work on, anything that was more challenging than expected, and anything to focus on. Sometimes we'll set up a time for our programming if there's something where it makes sense.

I had regular 1-1s with my manager with glowing reviews right up to when I got laid off. If you are using objective base reviews make sure you're talking about them, otherwise bring up issues you have and talk about whatever it is the mgr wants to talk about.

I only took a brief look at it, but it basically looks kind of like what you get with most dynamic languages these days, i.e. python comprehensions and the like. (but way less compact code wise). It seems a little clunky but for sure it's better than "loop and construct a new list"

Rands is awesome for management blog posts.

http://randsinrepose.com/archives/th...-the-disaster/

Edit: And if you're not a manager, it's still useful. If your manager isn't using 1-1s effectively, you can always change the course yourself.

Thanks, now I'm going to be on edge wondering if I'm going to be laid off soon!

It seems that some mobile browsers (Chrome and Opera, though can't be sure of others), do not acknowledge 301 redirects from naked to www domains.

This sort of becomes an issue, since people a) do not type "www" in the url box and b) many sites will strip out "www." from links to your site, which means the end-user will get an error.

I looked around at some other sites and they seem to be suffering from the same issue, so I know it isn't strictly me, but I'm not sure where to look for a solution (if one is available).

that seems hard to believe. are you sure it's not a caching issue? maybe test on a totally fresh phone?

EDIT: another option is to have the naked domain point at the same server, rather than redirecting it. unless your application code is coupled to the www, that should work.

Yea that seems unbelievable.

I even read recently that Google can detect the custom 404 redirect necessary for hosting an SPA on github pages and even categorizes that 404 redirect as a 301.

I'm just using redirects via cloudflare. Maybe pointing two cname records wouldn't be the worst idea, though I'm guessing that may mess up my ability to do analytics due to google splitting urls (?).

IRT to the phone caching. I turn it off on mine, and incidentally, a friend bought a new phone yesterday and was testing out my site along with some others, and kept running into the same error. He was on Android with stock Chrome.

(The more I keep working around Heroku, Cloudflare, AWS, etc, the more I'm questioning the wisdom of using all of this stuff)

Hmm I have my site on AWS S3, cloudflare and heroku, I'll write a post about how I did the redirects.

This is the official article here: https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en...oku-over-HTTPS

I know everything was copacetic until I added a store subdomain, which is hosted on Shopify. The pain-point is that Heroku doesn't give a free SSL (though you can use letsencrypt) and Shopify does give a free SSL.

The page rules for the top-level domain appears be working for desktop, but failing on mobile, and that's rather confusing. Doing all of this in nginx is fairly simple.
