My friend's brother is the founder of firebase. I guess he got a nice payday when google bought them. But he's not rich beyond his wildest dreams or anything. And he has to stay with google for a certain amount of time to get all the money (standard).

The lead investor on the startup I've been working with sold his company to Microsoft and then technically worked for them while he was traveling the globe as a tourist for 6 months. Must be nice. I think he still works for them technically.

i think the first time my js code got reviewed, i was told to always use === in js, and it hasn't really been that much of a hassle

Any experienced iOS or Android devs out there who want to work on the app-side at the startup I'm at? I know they're trying to use react native as much as possible.

Anyone here every have issues with rsi/arthritis? My index finger swelled up a few months ago and still isn't quite the same as on the other hand (no pain though). Recently some tendon in the palm of my hand became painful and swollen. I'm kind of panicking because my mom has rheumatoid arthritis and just hoping it's RSI from using the mouse all dayand not something less serious.

I've never had swelling but I have had annoying aches and dull pain in my right hand at the computer.
Wearing a decent wrist brace (found a Muller brand one on Amazon) and using a better mouse (for me personally the performance MX has been the best, but everyone is different) has left me with 0 issues.
But tbh the swelling makes it seem like an entirely different issue from mine.

I've had various chronic aches and pains due to working and computer use throughout my life. Sometimes the solution is to change your work station or habits, but it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what is the root cause.

I think the best general advice is to reduce the length of your sessions. Take frequent breaks and walk around, at least 5 minutes every hour. If you can't do that then at the least do some chair stretches, neck stretches and focal point excercises to relieve eye strain.

(dislaimer: I am not a doctor) Swelling in the finger sounds like mouse related, so maybe focus on using more keyboard shortcuts?

Yep. Become a lead, then you spend at least half your time talking and looking at other people's stuff.

Best thing I ever did was learn to use the mouse with my left hand also. Now I can switch back and forth throughout the day/week

I spend like 1/2 hour at most looking at my team's crap and saying "**** it, it passes jshint".

Best change I've made is wrist rest for both mouse and keyboard.

Best change I ever made was a split keyboard and remapping Ctrl to caps-lock.

I do this on every comp i touch. So annoying when you go to do something on someone elses keyboard though. What a terrible design they continue on with to have caps lock be so large and central. Sigh

ETA: Best advice I can give is leave control as control also so when other ppl touch your keyboard they dont bitch. I put caps lock to scroll lock but I dont think Ive touched it

CapsLock -> Backspace is arguably even better

True story: my girlfriend doesn't use the shift key. She presses capslock, then the letter, then capslock again.

I've never seen anyone do that before. It blows my mind.

My wife refuses to use control-c/control-v. Drives me insane.

OMFG this is the greatest day of my life! Disable Caps Lock in keyboard preferences (modifier keys). Then install this and check use caps lock key. It picks delete automatically!

Now I have a real delete key (not just backspace key labeled 'delete'). I no longer have to hold down Fn-Delete, and half the time get it wrong and hit the Ctrl key instead, causing all kinds of havoc.

I've spent approximately 2 years teaching my dad how to copy and paste - 99% over the phone. 1 year was just learning how to select text (What does it mean when the text is blue? It won't be blue when I print right?). I think he's almost gotten it. Him having to write a 400-page book has helped accelerate the process.

Although he accidentally deleted 4 chapters and had to re-type them due to forgetting to hold down the Control key - thus replacing all his text with the letter C. Then, as far as I can tell from the post-mortem, he panicked and forget about Ctrl-Z (despite me telling him 100x to remember Ctrl-Z, and him saying "let me write this down" every time). Also he somehow closed and saved the file with only the letter C as content. And somehow he managed not to have any other copies or ever email anyone.

THEN he decided to call me (after, not before, mashing buttons right and left) in a complete and utter panic. Stressed me out to no end when I was already having a very stressful day. He even got on me for giving him the power to destroy worlds with this Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V voodoo. I told him that's why I kept telling you about Ctrl-Z and that I could just bow out of the conversation if he's going to imply I helped cause this in anyway. We tried everything to find his files - even automatic windows versioning which almost seemed to be turned on, but wasn't. In the end he re-wrote them in a few days.

I almost had him learning his way around Windows as well, and understanding what Windows Explorer is (although he still always tries to go to Internet Explorer first - great job forever confusing the olds on that one M$). But then his HD crashed and they put Windows 10 on his computer. Now he's completely lost again and I can't even help him that much because I don't have a Win 10 computer.

Love how M$ completely re-arranges everything for no good reason with each OS. I had him on Win 8 with Win 7 classic shell. I knew right where everything was.

I forgot to mention: I remap capslock to ctrl when held, esc when pressed and released. Its surprisingly intuitive to use and works really well with vim.

Caps lock = real Delete is next to God.

Oh wait, crap. It's just backspace. I already have that. Please god let it work as a real Delete in place. Ok I got it - keycode 117.

Now I just need to train myself to actually remember to use it.

Suzzer, you're a bad son for not setting him up with office online with version history.

He has been using Open Office forever. He doesn't want to pay for office, nor do I want him to start all over again with a new word processor.

I guess on some versions of windows it has automatic version history. Unfortunately his version didn't.

$5/mo to not have to retype 4 paragraphs seems like a good tradeoff

or Google Docs

Again, it would take him years to learn where everything is.
