I'd think long and hard before talking to B about the offer from A.

If someone I just hired mentioned this I would not give them a raise, and I'd think that person is going to leave as soon as they find something better paying. When it came time for advancement or juicy projects they'd be at the bottom of my list.

Money is nice but it's not everything. Happiness in a stable well organized company is much more important to me than getting a few more bucks.

yep, not confident yet to talk to my manager about this
Finally, I'm staying in B, politely declined the offer

  • Testing
  • Deployment
  • Database
  • Networking

In other words, they're too cheap/incompetent to have DBA/QA/Developer/IT people, and want someone who can be "they guy that knows about computers."

Wouldn't touch that dumpster fire with a 10-foot pole.
I dunno. If they paid you salary of 3 devs it's probably worth it for both sides.

I think the correct play here is to continue looking for a job at company C which will give you the 30% pay increase without having the known baggage that comes from company A. It's appears you're underpaid relative to the market even after accepting the new job with company B.

the conventional wisdom about never accepting a counteroffer is founded on few actual data points and mostly on fears of monsters under the bed. your boss isn't moving heaven and earth to increase your pay by 30% more just so that he can hire someone else to replace you (if it was so easy, why hadn't he hired more high-quality engineers already?) and then fire you 3 months later... out of spite? what? sometimes, it's just business. you both agree you should get paid 30% more. no drama. fin.

I always love when a service like Slack goes down and I go to their status page and it's nothing but green checkboxes showing everything is perfect.

It's amazing how paralysed at work I felt when slack went down. I couldn't contact anyone on my team quickly... who reads email these days?

And I'm not touching msft teams with a 10 ft pole.

Lived in WA for several years a few years ago. Higher sales tax but no income tax. Really nice because no extra paper work. If you can swing Vancouver WA you can go across the border to OR that has no sales tax and pay no income tax by living in WA. I lived in the Puget Sound area though. Still traveled to OR for some big ticket purchases. Lots of high tech work in the Seattle area.

I live in TX which has no income tax, but I've lived here most of my life. I think fairly regular sales tax (8.25% here I think), property tax can be pretty high depending where you are.

Reminded of this from a post in the Lounge forum, has anyone else used an acoustic coupler to connect to a network?
Also used a DEC mini computer that you had to operate a series of switches in the correct order so that it would boot up.

I got an offer from a competitor for a full time remote position at over 50% more total comp than I was making.

It really opened my eyes to just how much current employer was underpaying us and how much they actually value us because they were willing to almost match it.

Still considering both but leaning towards leaving.

My location is wrong on here, I've moved back to MN and for some reason it won't let me change it.

Both companies based out of Bay Area, current company has about 400 employees where I live in MN. New company does not have an office here.

50% is a big gap

but seems like you're on the fence, perhaps you should tactfully delay and quickly put yourself out there and see what else is offering more

Congratulations on the offer. Don't forget, $ are only part of the compensation package, which is, in turn, only part of the work environment.

Assuming the culture of both places appeals to you roughly equally, I'd lean toward moving as well. It sounds as if your current organization isn't treating their employees fairly unless they're forced to. That smells of a place that doesn't value their people.

Good luck, I hope whichever choice you make ends up being the best one for you.

I know you have to have target hardware to develop firmware for. So working remotely at the new place they ship you the hardware? If so sweet. I worked remotely at the biggest software company in the world and had target hardware to interface to remotely. Sweet. I work remotely now and I love it. My advice, leave based on what you posted.

After current companies retention offer the gap is < 10%. When I told my current 1st and 2nd line managers I was still leaning towards leaving they asked for a couple days to try to beat competitor's offer. That was a couple days ago so we will see today.

I love my actual job and my immediate managers. Overall culture of current job is terrible though and has been getting progressively worse.

A few coworkers have left for competitor and all say it is like unicorns and rainbows. I think that's a big point in favor of competitor -- they are hiring away most of current company's best talent.... I don't want to be the last one on a sinking ship!

I will be able to do most of my debugging remotely. I'll be like the 6th engineer here in town they have hired remote. Sounds like they just have someone in the remote lab move hardware around as needed.

I would imagine if they hire a few more (and it sounds like it's in the works) they may rent a space just for us to put hardware and a network connection at and we can work hybrid as needed.

Good for you.
I was going to advise to move too as you probably wouldn’t get a raise for a while as they now will be thinking they are overpaying you.
