Thanks y’all. Now I’m waiting on company B to get back. I had my in person interview with the hiring manager yesterday morning and it has been radio silence since.

Without company Bs offer I’ll probably get lowballed but at least it will be at the bottom of L4s range instead of L3. The recruiter mentioned the minimal TC to me and it was about 10% higher than my current salary.

My recruiter wanted to get a good sense of which company I would pick assuming if company B gave me an offer. I told him it would be a close decision and that I would have to spend some time discussing this with my family and partner.

He then continue to talk down on Company B and how their stock is volatile.

I think I did a good job of not showing my intentions.

Anyways I should the full offer details by Monday, and hopefully company B will be around with something.

Your recruiter sounds like a dbag lol. I know most people have bad experiences but my last guy seemed fine and helped me set my ranges for companies and didn't push back when I said I wasn't interested. Sounds like I got lucky

I've never had a recruiter that didn't instantly dematerialize all other potential employers as soon as one real offer came in, and turn into the pushiest salesman of all time on that one offer.

That's fair. I had a huge interest in one company and got an offer so I didn't have to do the naw no thanks move.

Don't worry about B. You can negotiate with A without worrying about them. At a bare minimum you should ask for 10% more than they offered which they'll almost certainly accept and will be a 20% increase for you. Are all of these jobs in the same city ?

The V8 engine API is so ****ing poorly documented it’s kind of amazing. A lot of the API is just the function signature and refers to a line number in v8.h. Lol. My main resource has been a textbook that contains code that’s really deprecated.

Once I am getting the hang of it, it’s actually pretty incredible and even though some things are a pain and waaaay too verbose - it is really cool.

How common is developing C++ addons for node? Is there a lot of work there?

Mildly amusing story. I'm leaving megacorp A for megacorp B. Gave my notice last Friday. Yesterday my manager saw me in a meeting room with a teammate talking for a while, then asked me if I was trying to poach our team lol. Note that he doesn't know where I'm going because I would have been walked out same day if I told them (he assumes it's a competitor though). Really pissed me off, so I said I won't be in office for next 6 days and will just come by to drop off my laptop and badge today. So get 6 days free vacation (they will stay pay out the 2 weeks). Moral - just say you're going to a competitor and get the full 10 days vacation and avoid doing them any favors with "hand off". Lol big companies.

jmakin, saw this today and thought of your recent questions - QuickJS JavaScript engine (written in C) (probably not relevant to what you're doing but possibly interesting)

Lol that would be great if I can just peace out and still get paid.

I have 2 planned vacation days Aug 8th and 9th. And depending on how long negotiations will go, those vacation days might be during my last 2 weeks. I'm guessing I should tack on another 2 days as part of my notice? It feels weird taking a vacation during the last 2 weeks but this was planned long in advanced.

Thanks that’s the engine underneath what I’m writing, something to look at when i’m bored and high and cant sleep. I appreciate the link that looks really interesting.

Written in C is gnarly - the V8 engine is C++ and already really impressively optimized. As much as i have historically hated JS as a language, its architecture and JIT compiler is fascinating. Programming this middle later in C++ has been really user friendly and I typically suck at this stuff.

My coworker is the C++ senior dev and doesnt seem to be picking it up that fast. He is mostly a C programmer. This is mostly OO programming which my mind works with a lot better.

I would tack on the two days. I had a similar experience to muttiah about 6 months ago when I quit. Gave my notice on a Friday morning, got an email from HR Friday afternoon stating my exit interview was the following Monday. Be ready to turn in your badge and notebook computer as it would be your last day. Got paid for the full 2 weeks.

It depends on the company. My company has th standard anti competitive policy so if you're going to a competitor you get walked out same day and still get final 2 weeks pay. I still get my vacation payout too.

Yeah and definitely don't waste vacation days during your last 2 weeks. Take the vacation payout and just don't work those 2 days. Usually once you give notice it goes through hr system so in most companies your vacation balance is locked after giving notice.

So I would just disappear for those two days? That seems rude. Or do you mean just leave two days earlier? Meaning giving 1.5 weeks notice?

Anyways, I had my company B interview almost a month ago. Due to holidays and having to do another in-person follow up interview with the hiring manager last Tuesday (since he was on PTO when I interviewed), I have a phone call tomorrow with the recruiter. I keep getting the "You will hear results soon, let me schedule a call later", but never actually get a call set up. But it is finally happening tomorrow morning.

My guess is that I was the 2nd choice candidate and they didn't want to offer me anything until the 1st rejected OR it's one of those things where the hiring manager didn't think it would be a good team fit and they want me to interview for a different team. I think if it was an outright reject, I would have known so a month back.

It's going to be interesting since company A has been asking for updates about company B. Company A's recruiter did leave a voicemail late Friday saying that he has numbers to share on Monday, so I don't think they are going to adjust the numbers if they find out company B is out of the picture. My paranoia is telling me that I'll find out that company B rejects me and that during the call to discuss numbers with company A is going to change their numbers based on that. It's stupid paranoia heh.

Anyways, this is going to be interesting day tomorrow.

There is much less of a relationship here than you believe. Just tell them how much you want to take the job and ignore company B. You have to give them the impression that you are willing to walk away.

That seems a bit overkill, especially if the vacation days were planned way in advance.

Company B just called and they want to send me an offer. Now I have a tough decision. The one downside with company B is the 1 year cliff and the stock has been rocky. However the work is interesting though I do have concerns about WLB.

Company A is well established with better WLB.

Anyways, I’ll probably make a decision by end of the week. Company B has equal pay so they won’t move much on pay. And one thing is that they have a 72 hour deadline once the offer is given.

Equal pay policy (so no merit based increases, just totally based on X role, Y years of experience?) and 72 hour deadlines?
