Did you do the coding exercise Suzzer? They asked a couple of simple questions and then some weird thing where you had measure the maximum or shortest distance between words based off some weird wikipedia chart where numbers had numeric values, i don't even remember what it was exactly, but it was super weird.

No I think this is the first email I got from them.

Well actually, I got this on June 30th:

Quote:
Do you know any programmers looking for a new job or company? If you refer a friend and they get a job, we'll give you each $5000 and a bottle of Dom Pérignon to celebrate!

We run engineering interviews without looking at resumes or credentials. Engineers who go through our process are taken directly to the final interview at companies including Facebook, Apple, Dropbox, and Stripe.
Damn, price has gone down.

We’re hiring and I’m going to insist to be made part of the interview process, I want to do the cultural fit interview. Mine was pretty bad. We’re one toxic person away from me not being able to deal with it anymore. I don’t even care if it’s out of line to ask, I feel like I can and should be part of the process despite being so new and inexperienced.

Been working on a poker engine. I am using an intrusively linked list, which is implemented as a c array of structures with a next pointer.

are there many professional online poker players in 2018? didn't Stars make the games nearly unbeatable?

Nope, complete nonsense. Games are plenty beatable (they might not be the same games that were most beatable 10 years ago), rakeback is lower to non-existent is all. There are sites other than Stars, too.

It currently does not do anything. The ambition is to run poker simulations.

I spent the day programming tic-tac-toe, and I want to use Linux IPC, and do the same with the poker sim later. I think I am going to make a tic-tac-toe app first to learn some concepts.

I want the server to store the game state, and take messages from the players. What IPC mechanism should I use? I am thinking about using pipes for player-vs-player and shared memory for a basic ai min-max. Any good resources for IPC? I figure after writing this portion, the engine should apply to turn-based games in general.

My current goal is to randomly walk through hands. So, they are posting blinds, putting in bets, evaluating the winner (found free code online for evaluation). Doing it all in C and pointers.

This class was amazing imo as far as AWS and lambda intro: https://www.udemy.com/aws-serverless...rn/v4/overview

I kept thinking how I'd gladly pay like $300 for this instead of the $11.99 or whatever it cost me.

I am starting with shared memory, and plan on using message passing if I spin a game server.

After somehow milking his old HP printer/copier for 15 years (!) my Dad finally had to get a new one.

This is email #10 or so in the rabbit hole series:

Quote:
Hey suzzer--

I'm terribly sorry to keep bugging you. I know you've got a ton of other things to do. But a scary wrinkle just developed. I went to HP's Help page, found there a Security Warning which took me to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06097712. As you'll see, this is a Security Warning on a whole bunch of HP printers, mine included. (Although mine is HP Office Jet Pro 6978, it's apparently included under HP Office Jet Pro 6970. HP Office Jet Pro 6970 is what's labeled on my set-up, download CD as "All-in-One series.")

The Warning states: "Two Security vulnerabilities have been identified with certain inkjet printers. A maliciously crafted file sent to an affected device can cause a stack or static buffer overflow, which could allow remote code execution."

Don't know what that means, but I know it can't be good!

To avoid this, I must go through a whole series of steps regarding "Firmware updates." Right now, though, I really don't want to plunge down this printer rabbit hole any further. The CD left the HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 program file in my computer (even though it still won't connect), but after reading the Security Warning, I deleted it. When you get a chance, could you access the Security Warning link, read it over, and tell me if you think I should still buy/keep this printer. I'm not going back to Office Depot until Monday, so there's no big rush. Thanks.

Love, Dad
Not a big concern yet as he still can't get his laptop to even realize there's a printer plugged in. I have a feeling it's something crazy like he has the wrong kind of USB cable but it still sorta fits in the back of the printer somewhere. He was like - I could try wireless printing, and I'm like nahh I don't think we're ready for that Dad. I'd be getting emails every day in perpetuity.

He's gonna take the printer, USB cable and his laptop back to Office Depot on Monday.

He won't call the HP support # I gave him because he thinks it will turn into a big nightmare. Which I actually completely get because I'm the exact same way. Just thinking about calling customer support on anything raises my blood pressure. Automated voice recognition support invariably sends me into a blind screaming rage within 15 seconds.

Flutter, but the answer to this question depends greatly on your project.

Question for the AWS gurus itt: a lambda is code and a cloud formation template (roles, triggers, etc). Would you put those in the same repo? Put all the cloud formation stuff in it’s own repo? Should a lambda template (not code) be just as independent as the code - IE deployable on its own?

I kinda like the idea of each lambda having two separately deployable repos.

Taking it one step further - does something like the SNS template get its own repo - instead of being part of a giant cloud formation repo? I think it has to right? You want to be able to deploy SNS w/o rebuilding your whole infrastructure. Or maybe Amazon is smart enough to only redeploy stuff that changed in your big-ass cloudformation template?

I have a lot to learn about cloudformation. Just bought this udemy class. https://www.udemy.com/aws-cloudforma...rn/v4/overview I hope it's as good as the last one.

Wouldn't it be cheaper for Netflix to just pay some 20 year old film geeks like $15/hour to manually setup their algorithm by manually linking movies together?

There aren't that many movies.

Their current suggestion algorithm imo, sucks.

Specifically, which phone features you want to utilize?

Assume that we aren't going to learn all of them and just want to get better in one, as a generality, which should that be?

I'm not suggesting it's a cakewalk, just that "omg online poker is unbeatable!" is nonsense. Yes, some serious study may be required to compete at the higher levels. It is fairly common to pull 5% ROI from low-mid level games.

Can you imagine what today's webdev looks like to someone who used to make easy decent money crafting homepages for local business with Dreamweaver and hosting on a reseller plan, who got out of the web game but now took a quick look at what web devs do today?

And while I'm not at all certain, I think in 2017 gramps was one of those regs sticking to traditional dead formats while ignoring the massive goldmine of new format where all the fish were (jackpot sngs). Again, may be totally wrong here but I suspect not given your statement.

That said, it is obviously very difficult to match the salary of an east coast dev by playing poker these days.

Not the same thing. Today's webdev is just about learning more tools to build cool stuff. Many times it's a win-win for everyone. It's not about continuing to make a profit in a zero-sum game with a shrinking prize pool, shrinking losing player pool, and much lower if any frequent player incentives.

I feel pretty confident gramps was chasing every profitable game out there. I know he was playing a ton of the super turbos - which were printing money for a bit until they killed off the fish.

Let's just say you need a supercomputer to model GTO scenarios just to keep up with your pro vs. pro interactions, or you probably won't be profitable at SNGs these days.

Note: maybe I'm wrong and gramps is a big fish. But he was always hugely profitable back in the day and was definitely the best coach I had. My coaching deal with him was pretty funny in that it was percentage-based and I ran like God (18%) over our 1000 SNG deal. I still wonder if I played my best because I knew he was watching.
