I think anybody on the team being able to do code reviews is way better than leads doing all code reviews.

I agree in normal situations. But when you have a constant churn of offshore devs it has to be the leads.

Btw I really like this book.

From the parts I do have experience with, the author's advice seems spot on. The chapters are all meaty with real world examples. It's probably going to become my bible as I try to build this microservice platform on AWS.

Jesus, I semi-fell for this scam: https://medium.com/@LanceUlanoff/my-...st-711d7f87d9d

They called and said it was Apple calling and my iCloud had been accessed from overseas in the last couple days.

The whole reason it almost worked is I had just been on the phone with Apple Support last week, where they did take over my desktop to help me figure out why iMessage on my mac wasn't working. So I was like - oh we do this again.

The software - GoToAssist is legit and was already on my computer. But the site that launched wasn't even apple (DUH!). She got connected but then asked me to enter my email and "number". At that point finally my spidey sense kicked in and I hung up. She got my full name but that's it. I deleted the app and emptied the trash.

Guhh - it sucks how they can catch you right at a time like that. Maybe there's some way they find out you were just on the phone with Apple. I dunno.

I almost got caught in another scam phishing for my Paypal password - saying they were investigating a large purchase, that came like 1 day after I'd just payed like $4k for something over paypal. They must have some kind of inside info.

Was in devops hell today trying to track down a potential deadlock issue but each test took 45 mins to run. A few ****ups by me here and there (one test i had checked out the wrong branch lmao) and some visible exasperation from my boss and i think i’m gonna stay up all night trying to diagnose it because i feel like an idiot that cant handle the simplest possible task assigned to me, which was getting performance numbers for some potential customers.

At 4:30 i wasnt close to done and i told him it’d be a lot more palatable at home with a beer in my hand and he chuckled and said ok. But this has to be resolved tomorrow and Im not even close to figuring out what’s going on. If i figure it out though i’ll get some major street cred, so i want to try

None of this bull**** with first in / last out. Always lots to do. Generally working with people that care about doing that stuff. Promotions that relate to getting **** done (and not just when you get in/out of the office). Stuff like that.

Edit: I have a hard time even imagining the idea of a development job where you have massive amounts of downtime that can't be spent in any productive way.
Same here. I often take it for granted but it's more rare than it seems.

I have a friend graduated from same school as jmakin and I. Graduated a year ago and is just making 50k in Orange County as a software dev. Boss just gave him a raise of 8k after a year and they promised to add another 2-3k after a few months. Poor guy is getting taken advantage of.

I have been pushing him to be more aggressive about a salary re-adjustment and encouraging him in finding a new job.

He’s not extactly the brightest but damn after a year he should be making more.

Did you ever get it figured out?

Can someone please explain to me why I have to turn my volume up so loud to hear youtube videos that when I send an email, the notification sound just about shatters my ear drums?

Edit: Ok I found alert volume and turned that down. Still frustrating how quiet so many youtube vids are. Often I can barely hear them on my 13" Mac Pro internal speakers.

Edit edit: apparently VLC can play youtube links? I'll have to give that a try.

Great DevOps talk btw:

Yea I fixed it but I’m not sure if it’ll break other stuff and I need to figure out why my fix worked.

It started out as me getting assigned a task to collect performance data. Ok cool. Then i discovered this nasty issue where thousands of threads were just spinning in place for no apparent reason.

So to get the numbers, i just stayed up super late and woke up every few hours to click on the next test i needed to run and made sure the previous one ran ok.

By this morning i spent about 3 hours tracing this and narrowed down why the threads were spinning, they kept trying to read from a bad file descriptor in a while loop. That led me down another rabbit hole and another and I finally “fixed” it but idk why it works now it just does. Seemed good enough for my boss but I need to test it more.

Now I can get my performance numbers without it taking 3 years though.

YouTube and Netflix are total *******s about this

Netflix pisses me off because half their shows seem to have the action scenes incredibly loud and people talking incredibly soft. Maybe it’s awesome for the guy living alone in his soundproof house with a kickass media room but it’s ****ing impractical and annoying for most people.

I could just be old and have bad hearing too.

I use closed captioning because it’s the only way to follow some shows without waking the whole house.

I've gone from DVR to cutting the cord and back to DVR again. Even the crappy Frontier FIOS DVR is 10x better experience than streaming. The controls are snappier, it's much quicker to navigate around. FFing and RWing is 100x better. Everything is right there in one place. I hate it when I have to switch over to my Roku to watch something. Trying to watch youtube on a roku is the absolute nut low.

Just wait until they start forcing commercials down your throat.

I need some ideas for a 24h hackathon, preferably something related to golang/backend/cloud/kubernetes. Wouldn't hurt if it was in the lottery/gaming domain, but that's not a strict requirment.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a dream last night that I started a new job - I don't know if it's because I lost my previous one or because I wanted to switch. I got fired on the first day - they didn't say why but I think it's because I rode my bike to work the first day and then took my shorts off and walked across the room to change just covering my front with my shorts.

It's OK though, I got a new job midway into the first day anyway, working for a guy I worked with at my very first job.

This all took place in a modified version of downtown Houston from my youth, with some parts replaced by sort of... forest trails?

Both jobs asked me to write a take-home type program, *after* I was hired, that was directly related to the graduate research I did.

I'm sure this all means something.

I am just starting a new semester and was excited to take my university's "Modern Web Dev" course. The prof who usually teaches it uses React, Node, etc. but the prof this semester is using PHP. I have limited exposure to PHP but I think of it as not-so-modern and incredibly ugly. On the other hand, I realize that some companies are still using it, so maybe it will open up employment opportunities.

Would you guys recommend taking a web dev course that uses PHP or should I drop this course and self-learn the technologies that I am actually interested in learning?

Which device?

Oh yeah - the HD and compression is better on FIOS too. Sports looks much better.
