The idea that people you can't see aren't working is one of the worst ones in IT.

We're about to add features to a legacy app. It currently uses React@0.14X. Teammate wants to build new stuff in React@16.

Solution being proposed is to use 2 different versions of react in the app.

Is this a bad idea?

Also while it uses React it's 99% backbone/dojo.

It depends.

I guess without knowing extra information I'd say yes its a bad idea assuming it really is a legacy app that you don't expect to update in the future.

Edit: I'm coming to this with very little React specific information. Just treating it as any library dependency. So there could also be specific React things that move the needle one way or another.

Well it's legacy in terms of the main codebase is 7-10 years old and has tons of bolted on stuff and the desire to work in dojo is low.

React likes to create a couple of globals by default. I'm sure it's possible to load it in a way so that you can have multiple versions (module loading? but you'd have to have a module loader in the browser, e.g. webpack. I also think browserify supports this but I'm not familiar with it) but it sounds pretty ugly to me.

I'm about 90% sure I want to move to San Jose, Costa Rica. It has everything I want - nice bar and restaurant scene, coffee shops, perfect weather, tons of stuff to do nearby. Anyone have any idea what the developer scene is like there or where would be the best place for me to look?

Probably a silly idea, but clone the codebase and just try upgrading to 16 and see if it survives? As far as I can see there isn't a great deal of breakage between 14 - > 15 -> 16.

Uh this is really dumb. A react 14 app would take an hour tops to convert proptypes etc to working in 16.

That's probably where I'm going to host my bookie software from. Can you be my man on the ground?

Oh man, I had the same feeling when I visited there. No clue what daily life would be like regarding housing, banking, crime etc, but a really great place to be. I thumbs up this idea

I had a friend who lived in costa rica for ~1 year after college. Went to visit her with my now wife and it was indeed an amazing place. Went to west coast.

Worked with a guy who got a business undergrad then moved there and ran an arepa shop for a couple years and then came back home and got a job in tech.

You have to head to Nicaragua every few months to not overstay the visa from the states, and that country is a bit shady/sketchy from stories but overall fine.

Jaco sounds kinda ****ty, theres some poker player refugees living there, I think some had a tread somewhere (travel forum?).

I'm remembering now I met a dude when I was there from the UK who built a website to build timelines. Teachers used it to easily build timelines to use in their classes. It was in Ruby and every few months he would add features that were requested. It was just a web-based timeline site that made him like 40k/yr in pounds, which he said was enough to sustain a great lifestyle there.

Jaco is hooker/a**hole American paradise.

I'd hope to get a longer term work permit or something. Nicaragua is a disaster right now. But I guess just going across the border and turning around is fine.

seems absurd. although we recently went from angular 4 to angular 5 and it took like 2 days to fix everything. (mostly bc they were importing the same things from different places (BehaviorSubject lol) and it wasnt triggering an error just messing everything up. fun stuff.)

then we find out that google doesnt even use angular 5 and they feel that 6 is stable and they have been using it for months. so we really shoulda just went from 4 to 6.

but still, a few days work seems way better than deploying 2 different versions.

I think i’m kicking ass at work

Have been going through the backlog and prioritizing wherever i can. Earlier this week i was sleep deprived and messing around with a test on an ancient serious sounding issue that for some reason had been ignored for a long time. I realized the old test couldnt reproduce the error, so i tweaked it until i broke something weird.

I brought this to the attention of a dev and he wrote a new test and it got everyone buzzing around all day yesterday. I helped identify one other issue it’s related to and we discovered a core architectural problem.

Today was the end of one of my test sprints and my boss and the head developer sat in on the meeting which was nerve wracking, but it seems like we’re now planning to address this serious issue thats been sitting in the backlog for literally forever.

Feel pretty good about my progress. The backlog is almost halved in the last 3 weeks since I’ve been going through it. I feel like Im not actually doing anything but asking people questions and getting people to talk to each other.

I've always been a person with lots of coding side-projects, and usually a lot of hobby projects too. For years I balanced bike riding, photography, poker, wood and metal working, programming as a hobby and programming for work, and sort of never understood why most people don't do that.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition (hyperthyroidism via Graves disease) and eventually had my thyroid removed, so now I have extreme hypothyroidism that's managed with thyroid hormone. My thyroid hormone blood work is solidly in the "normal" range now.

And... I never do anything any more. I am barely able to drag my ass out the door to ride the bike a few times a week. I half-assedly work on side programming stuff and that's basically it. Thyroid hormone is a little bit like amphetamines or adrenaline, too much makes you sleepless, anxious, energetic, argumentative, impatient etc. Too little is like sedatives, no motivation, no energy, all the symptoms of depression, etc.

I guess my body was basically giving me extra doses and I was living as a manic person and then once the hormone went away I lived as a depressed person for a while (they wait after the removal for a while to start prescribing replacement hormones, for a few weeks I slept 12h/day and never did anything at all). Now I guess I'm more or less normal.

But it feels like sub-normal because I guess I was above normal for so long. Or maybe I'm actually below normal, I don't even know. It's kind of weird to think that some things you thought were fundamental parts of your personality are just a product of your hormone balance.

P.S. when I developed hyperthyroidism I was describing it to another bike racer and he thought it sounded good. Eat what you want, don't lose weight, don't sleep much, etc. But at the end it was really hell and it finally drove me to see a doctor about it. Some people take thyroid hormone as a performance enhancing drug and I really, really do not recommend it. There is little evidence that it improves performance and it makes people miserable.

Rusty - that sucks man. I always think I have it bad until I read a story like yours with some weird ailment that comes out of the blue. Hang in there.

I don't think I have it bad. As long as I take my medication I feel fine. I just may never have as much drive as I used to, I guess? I'm still pretty early in the process, it takes a while to find your dose and mine has just settled down within the last month or 2.

Sorry to hear that Rusty. I'd lose interest in life pretty fast if I no longer found hobbies interesting.

I have a half-assed thread in the Health and Fitness forum but I don't really keep it up to date. Actually now that I think of it, I actually have 2, but I abandoned the old one, which was about my inability to sleep. That was almost certainly a byproduct of the hyperthyroidism.

In retrospect, I quit a job 2 years ago and it was probably also due to hyperthyroidism. I was anxious, irritable, and not sleeping and I thought my job was making me unhappy. I don't think it was a great job but possibly I would not have quit if my hormone levels were normal.

What were the symptoms and overall negatives that drove you to a doctor finally? If you dont mind elaborating
