Re: SSL, another large vBulletin forum I read added it today, and posted this: https://www.neogaf.com/forum/announcement.php?f=2&a=68

While the end result of moving to SSL is a good thing, any time a very large and complex site does it it tends to break just about everything it can when it's first activated, and it's difficult to ascertain all the little things beforehand

Those do not seem like huge issues. We've had bigger issues on our site - notably some 3rd party content providers who refused to provide SSL end points.

I bought "hello, android" which is a crash course on android development. figure since I like java and I'm interested in making apps that would be a good place to start as a jumping off point for a project.

TIL ublock origin blocks cnet also. Seriously running a video is fine lol even minimized. How sad is it that this is necessary. I legit work 0-3 hours a day. Wonder how many other people in my situation would be OK with that. I'm not =/

When your last name is "Null".

It blows my mind that airline software could be programmed that badly. Seems to be wide open for attack.

I used to get my mail at 123 1/2 [street].

Can't tell you how many forms broke with that one. I would contact them and they'd tell me to put in 123 1 2 [street].

One of my coworkers used to live in a place where no homes had street addresses, so each home was delivered to "box 123." That broke nearly every shipping / delivery form. He even had to call Amazon to get his orders delivered.

The shipping system we used to use had a 20 char limit on all fields, where first, middle and last name had to be put into one feild. This was mainly a problem with names, where people needed c/o fields. Ironically, this was already pre-validated information from web storefronts, so it validated for Amazon, eBay, etc, and failed at the system.

So it turned out that I failed this one but each subsequent screen went better than the one before. Bombing this one gave me the motivation to really crank up the studying and I didn't actually want to work there anyway so it's all good so far

one of my programmers last name is O'donnell.
In the early days of the internet his name broke about 75% of places he put it in.

My article ended up on Reddit and appears to be creating a **** storm. The first comment lightly bashes into it (failing to see the point) and now it is getting up- and down-voted. Reddit can't seem to make up its mind if it is worth 2 points, 4 points, 5 points...

Anyone have suggestions for forums/web-sites where you can get in touch with (or just get some information about) artists who'll do custom game graphics?

I'm mostly glad I wrote **** like that in a pre-reddit era. Hell, it was barely into the slashdot era. I wrote a very similar article once on how oddly Oracle handled it's supposed 3-state nullness (empty, null, not null) and where it broke down.

I'm in the same boat but haven't looked too far. Probably ask deviantart people if you can license their stuff. Theres http://opengameart.org/ but haven't had much luck there in a limited amount of time poking around.

GL. I was going to write a long post reiterating my diatribe on how bogus the hiring process is. I'll just cut to the chase, take solace in the view that the rejection is meaningless, there is an extremely good chance that you would have been a productive employee.

Mostly they have been standard coding/algorithm/data-structure questions with two exceptions - one company wanted me to do a take-home test that seems to have been created specifically for me, where I had to publish the resulting code to github and the module to a repository, etc with the judging criteria including quality of unit tests, documentation, usability of the API, etc. I have barely used the required tech stack before and ended up writing like 30+ tests many of whom were not trivial, so that was quite time-consuming even though the core logic took like a couple of hours. Another company asked me to design a massively scalable system for an ecommerce site that would display different UI for out of stock items.

I find it so interesting that you're being given such expansive take home projects.

At my company and on HN there seems to be a reluctance to do that, specifically because nobody wants to put off the extremely sharp folks with options (a bucket you certainly seem to fall in to)

Thanks! Yeah it's not a big deal for me - the one rejection was the first interview in a long time and the first interview of its kind for me (phone screen with shared coding session) so at the time I was a little worried that it would be representative of my performance going forward but doing well in the next 4 quickly disabused me of that notion and like you said, it's kind of meaningless at the end of the day and life is not about the interviews. It's annoying to have to go through all of this but it's going very well so far, just have to rock the on-sites now!

not to suck your dick too much but tbh glad to see that someone as clearly talented as you can still blow interviews and not feel too bad about it.
